The Sandbox Episode 69 – Wake Up Review
The title of this week’s Agents of SHIELD episode, Wake Up, obviously refers to May’s attempt to break out of her simulation, but could it also refer to Coulson’s misguided attempt to circumvent the political realities of their new situation? Could Fitz’s epiphany be a sort of wake up call as well? It could refer to a lot of things!
Join us for show news, commentary and analysis for Wake Up, Faith’s CoulSass moments, and our listener feedback segment! This week we talk about the true nature of LMD May’s consciousness, the secretive nature of Mack, the discovery of Fitz’s continued deception, the perception of others that Coulson has feelings for May, and the continuing question of the identity of “the Superior.”

Agents of SHIELD Wake Up Show Notes
Mallory Jansen (Aida) in Galavant

Whoa.. whoa, whoa whoa.. did they just do that thing, where they do that thing.. all in just one episode?
Most shows could ahve strung us along for an entire season, maybe two on the central themes and plots explored in “Wake Up”.
I think we need a reset here, where we look at each episode like an entire Comic release. It really seems to be moving that fast.
I worry though that the coming of the Inhumans series might mean the writers are doing their version of “a Firesale” and just throwing everything out the window on one final last hurrah.
the tempo is certainly unprecidented..
Either they have caught on to the speculative fan discussions and trying to keep up.. or these are really the end times guys.
You mentioned it was strange that they picked saving the girl in Bahrain as the scenario to keep her at peace. I believe it is the perfect scenario just as Radcliffe does. He realizes it wasn’t enough to just give her something to fight, because ultimately her need to fight comes from the fact she is still fighting herself over not being able to save the girl in Bahrain. She has truly not been able to incorporate that failure into her life and who she is. And that by allowing her to re-fight and change that scenario she can rest finally. Now at what point does May’s subconscious start to rebel because it knows it is not true we will have to wait and see. Until then May can rest with the thought, false as it is, she finally has what she has truly wanted for all these years.
Mallory Jensen is doing great as Aida!
While I did like the “5 days earlier” opening I feel it’s fair to ask did we really need to see it at full length given we pretty much knew what happened. I think it’s a culmination regarding people seeing the May/Coulson romance. It wouldn’t be the first time Fitz did something wrecklessly – see him shooting the Monolith and risking everyone for what he wants; I agree with Mike regarding why couldn’t Fitz just tell Jemma what he was doing.
I loved Jemma wanting to protect Daisy! I agree it was out of character for Daisy to be so fast to sign the treaty. It was nice to see Coulson get caught because it keeps things fresh; it would have been great to see what deal Talbot worked out with Nadeer. Not surprisingly I’m all for the Fitzsimmons romance to end, I like them as friends but their romance is not good for them as individuals; based on interviews it sounds like Fitzsimmons is sticking around but if they split I’d be fine with it.
I vote for “Second Part” in the CoulSass poll.
Bahrain will always be emotional when it comes to May scenes just because of how huge an effect it had on her and the performance Ming gave – I’d argue those are her best performances on the series. It wouldn’t surprise me if they put “Dr. Strange” in there somehow. The promo for next week does look awesome! I thought it would be interesting if Jemma was the LMD given she was the one questioning everyone, I didn’t think it was the ones named though; Taltos makes an interesting argument for more LMD Radcliffs or one still being on the team.
