Some information about this episode

A little bit about the term “The Lost Generation.”

The generations of the 20th Century are, in order, The Lost Generation, G.I. Generation, Silent Generation, Baby boomers, Generation X, & Millennials. While it’s true that The Lost Generation’s moniker was popularized by Hemingway, he attributed it to his great friend and mentor, Gertrude Stein.

Notable persons born in that time period (1883-1900) are F. Scott FitzgeraldT. S. Eliot, James Joyce, John Steinbeck, William Faulkner, Isadora Duncan, Ezra Pound, Henry Miller, Aldous Huxley, J. R. R. Tolkien, C. S. Lewis and the composers Sergei Prokofiev, George Gershwin and Aaron Copland.

In America, this Generation died out completely on May 12, 2016 with the passing of Susannah Mushatt Jones, who was born July 6, 1899. It is believed that there are still two living members of The Lost Generation – one in Italy and one in Japan.

The same term (The Lost Generation) means something slightly different in Britain. They use it to refer to those who died in “The Great War,” but specifically to the upper-class casualties who died – believing that it caused an unwelcome shift in their class structure. (for example such notable casualties as the poets Isaac Rosenberg, Rupert Brooke, Edward Thomas and Wilfred Owen, composer George Butterworth and physicist Henry Moseley.)

Legacy Virus

We’re thrown right back into the dialogue between Lucy and R-Dad, and it’s not going well. What she’s hearing is an anathema to her sensibilities – and everything that she’s learned about Rittenhouse. It’s reinforced for us later in the episode when she tries to convince Lindbergh that he can choose his own future. That he’s not destined to follow in his father’s footsteps.

Teacher, Driver, Soldier, Spy

That would be Lucy, Rufus, poor poor Dave, and Hemingway. I’m classifying the lovely and talented Josephine Baker as a spy as well, since that seems to be the niche she fell into. Where she stays behind in the club, Hemingway joins our time-team – with mixed results – in order to find Flynn, Emma, and Lindbergh.

Free Agent

Meanwhile, back at the Lab, Agent Christopher has been released from duty by the NSA. (read: Rittenhouse) She’s free to visit Wyatt wherever he’s being held, and after some conversation, she slips him a paper clip in order for him to get free. Which of course – he does. I’m classifying both Wyatt and Christopher as “Free Agents,” thus the storyline title.

Rittenhouse has since fully infiltrated Mason industries, and things are very different upon Lucy and Rufus’ return. At first, they think the timeline has drastically changed, but soon figure out that it’s just home base that was shuffled.
