Cold is the response to anyone who interferes with Mr. Freeze’s work! Victor’s love for his Nora has pushed him over the edge and his icy cold wrath is felt by all of Gotham. Hugo Strange is ready to take advantage of it all.
Cold Is His Wrath
Victor has learned that his A13 formula will allow him to freeze Nora and revive her. He heads to ACE Chemicals (the spot in the comics where the Red Hood fell into a vat of chemicals and gained the green hair,white skis and red lips, becoming the Joker) a division of Wayne Tech. He freezes everyone in his path to get the liquid helium he needs. The man is COLD. He has impaled officers with ice shards, frozen bullets in mid-path, and leaves a frozen officer with an ultimatum written on them. Jim & Harvey read that Victor whats his wife freed. Victor has taken the night janitor as hostage and stolen what he needs. As he works our by the bay, he hears the news about his wife and knows what he must do. He is prepping with ice grenades and so much more.
He breaks into Arkham by distracting the police on one side and using his cold gun to freeze the wall and break in on another side. Mr. Freeze, in his new suit, makes his way through Arkham but is guided by Hugo Strange. Strange offers Mr. Freeze a deal of distraction of the police and a means of escape for one vial of A13. Victor gladly turns it over. Victor finds Nora, Leslie & Jim. He is cold and forceful sealing Jim in a closet and kidnapping Leslie to help with Nora. They escape to the house. The care, compassion, and love for his wife is so evident. He has already planned it out. He will Freeze her and since she is alive the Gotham will have to take care of her. He has killed many all to save her and is willing to be put away for it. But Nora steps in to stop him from doing any more. She switches cartridges in his gun and when he freezes her, the cold begins to crack her in to pieces. He is heartbroken and would rather be a dead man than live without her. So he freezes himself.
Hugo quickly claims him. He tells the police Victor died. But Victor’s body was taken to Indian Hill. Arctic cold eyes open on the frozen body. Hugo tells him that the exposure to the formula and the cold changed his body. The suicide by cold only served to transform him and only extreme cold will keep him alive. Victor is dead and Mr. Freeze lives. Beware his wrath it is colder than his heart!
Hot Heads, Burning Hearts, Cold Emotions
Captain Barns is furious at Mr. Freeze for taking down so much of the force and throwing the people of Gotham into a stone cold fear. He will use any means to capture Mr. Freeze even using Nora as bait. Jim has gone over the edge and does not fight him on the methods. He only begins to fight when Leslie insists on caring for Nora as her patient. Jim has gone over cold against the criminals of Gotham but his heart still burns for Leslie and their child. But as much as he protests Leslie will not relent.
The trap is set at Arkham and Leslie is tending to Nora, but the ward has another patient. Barbara, or as Ms. Peabody calls her Sleeping Beauty, is still in a coma on the ward. Leslie calls her names and coldly turns her head to the side. Leslie holds a burning rage in her heart for all Barbara did to she and Jim. Leslie holds no coldness or hate towards Nora and calmly tries to explain it all to her. Nora and Leslie have a talk about the men they love and how they have overlooked the darkness and cold emotions out of the love they feel. It opens both their eyes and calls them to action. Nora to try and stop Victor and Leslie to confront Jim. Leslie calls Jim on the carpet for trying to lie to her about Galavan’s death. Leslie sees to the heart of the matter and will not be left in the cold by Jim’s emotions. He will have to make a choice to be dead cold emotionally to everyone or to thaw out to Leslie.
Clinically Cold
The calm and cold duo of Strange & Peabody are running Arkham and Indian Hill like a well oiled machine. Hugo has prescribed mental & psychological treatment for the Penguin who is none to happy about it. His cold threats fall on deaf ears with Peabody. When he is back on the ward he is dazed and not himself. He later pleads to Jim to free him from the torture. Jim coldly refuses and Penguin spouts off that Jim owes him for covering for Jim in Galavan’s death. The ever resourceful Hugo is monitoring it all and making plans. Hugo has tried working with some of Mr. Freeze’s victims to solve his cryo issues to not luck. But thanks to the exchange he has made progress. Now that he has retrofitted Mr. Freeze’s suit he has all the help he needs in Freeze. Hugo and Peabody see that Penguin’s treatments are not working so they will have to resort to harsher methods.
Revenge Is a Dish Best Served Cold
Bruce has returned from the cold of Switzerland. But he is burning with rage. Alfred calls in Leslie to help Bruce work through his feelings. Rather than feeling detached or sad Bruce is intensely alive. Leslie talks about closure and not having an endless obsession. But the Batman we know has forged an obsession for justice and closure for others into weapons. Bruce openly talks about people being two things at once. Rather than talking Bruce down Leslie’s talk strengthens Bruce’s ideas. We see the start of the dual natures of Bruce & Batman start to take shape. Alfred has found the Wayne killer, Matches Malone (a departure from the comics where Matches was an alter ego for Bruce). Bruce is ready to do what it takes to take him out, but Alfred will not let Bruce have the blood on his hands. Bruce agrees to let Alfred kill Matches. Bruce goes behind Alfred’s back and asks Selina to get him a gun. Selina tries to reason with him but he is cold. Bruce is determined to take revenge.
Cold Hard Facts
I must say that this episode illustrates the power of relationships. We see Victor freezing everyone out, literally, out of the burning love he has for Nora. We see Nora sacrificing herself to the cold of death to stop her husband from killing more people. We see Leslie envying Victor & Nora’s love and devotion an seeing the hole in her and Jim’s life. She has to confront him to make sure he does not slip from the gray to the cold abyss. Penguin has no control and power be cause he has no relationships he can count on. He cannot see his way out of Arkham and Hugo’s quiet coldness is set to break him at all costs. Bruce is hiding himself from Alfred and using Selina hurting both relationships.Two episodes into the second half of the season and it is continuing to get better and better.
