Best Disney Soundtracks
The soundtracks and scores play a big part in most of Disney’s films, and in this week’s episode, Blake and JJ discuss some of the best of them! They discuss their favorite soundtracks, and the most overrated and underrated soundtracks, for both animated and live-action Disney films. (Look out, unpopular opinions included!) They also discuss what they have done Disney lately, and some Disney news involving Marvel Comics creating some new Alien and Predator comics.

Oh cool, the audio file finally shows up in the blog post so I don’t have to wait for it to go on iTunes just to listen to the episode! 😀
A VERY well done case for “Aladdin” Blake!
JJ is dead to the Disney community. How dare you; you picked “Lion King” as over rated? *shakes head* “Hakuna Matata” is not the only song on the CD, you also have “I Just Can’t Wait To Be King”, “Can You Feel The Love Tonight” and “Circle Of Life”. Not to mention you have Scar’s theme for the just straight up music! Also, also ‘I’ve got a lovely bunch of coconuts all standing on a row; big ones, small ones…’; you hurt me picking this one JJ I have to say.
WOW, JJ is just doing all of the hot takes this week. Bye JJ; you did a good job hosting while you were around. Ha. Man the feedback this week is definitely going to come in I feel. 🙂
“I wouldn’t say drop down and praise the Imperial March…” lol Blake.
Blake makes iTunes sound so old. 🙁
PERRY! 🙂
Hey Aaron, thanks for the feedback!
Thank you for taking time out of the criticism to compliment a good decision of ours! You’d be surprised to know we don’t get that much ? I love the movie and it’s music, it’s fantastic I think.
Yeah…JJ’s biggest problem with Lion King is Hakuna Matata. And I do have to agree with him (specifically that song). I love the rest of the soundtrack, and you’d see this soundtrack in my top three. But I do agree with JJ on how that song is pretty overrated. Again, I feel like we have to state this every time we have to respond to judgement ?: I wouldn’t say we hate any of our overrated selections. We just don’t like them as much. So although JJ thinks Hakuna Matata is overrated, that doesn’t mean he hates it. He just thinks it’s blown out of proportion if it’s generally only a chorus and instrumental.
(Also, a little behind-the-scenes: JJ’s overrated selections were more focused on specific songs, because through miscommunication, he thought we had to choose a specific song. So JJ doesn’t think the whole rest of the soundtrack is overrated, more specifically Hakuna Matata)
And yes, the feedback most DEFINITELY came raging in ? I already stated it, but JJ doesn’t hate Imperial March, it’s just he could think of other songs/themes that he likes better, while for many others, it’s at the top of the list. I, again, have to agree with him. I most definitely like Imperial March, but I don’t think you’d find it in my top three, but maybe in my top five.
Sorry about iTunes: I’m Gen-Z ? At least I remember it ?
And yes: Perry the Platypus. Gotta love P&F.
-Blake
To JJ’s credit, ‘Hakuna Matata’ is over hyped, it’s fun and iconic yes but it’s not the best song from the movie (debatably that’s “Circle Of Life”)…that said the whole CD is not and thus is where our conflict lies on that choice. 🙂
If we’re going to use one song to judge and entire album than actually the best Disney animated album is either “Pocahontas” because of ‘Colors Of The Wind’ or “Mulan” because of ‘Reflection’; maybe “Beauty & The Beast” takes it even because of the title song. 🙂 But you can’t fairly vote that way so yeah, I had to disagree with JJ saying “The Lion King” album is overrated. Ha. I’m still waiting on Rachel and Jeremiah to do that bracket battle for best solo Disney song because that’s going to be a fight for sure! 🙂
Again you made a very good case for “Aladdin” Blake, I don’t know if I can emotionally say you’re right just yet but I will give you a round of applause for your argument because it’s well done and has me debating internally is that in fact true.
“JJ’s overrated selections were more focused on specific songs, because through miscommunication, he thought we had to choose a specific song” – AH! See this is where I’m messing up debating him because I saw the title and then heard the discussion and it’s like “He’s judging the whole album only on one song, but that’s not the topic it says they’re doing”; as you said if we were debating solo songs then yes I agree with JJ ‘Hakuna Matata’ is overrated but going by the title of the topic “The Lion King” album is not overrated. It’s just a miscommunication. 🙂
I saw this podcast episode as maybe more of a partner piece to Rachel’s and Jeremiah’s pitched idea of doing a battle Royale for solo songs like they did a debate of best villain recently; they’re going to tackle solo songs and y’all were bringing the full album debate. I will say I also LOVE that you set limits for this debate too in regards to what you meant by Disney. Given the company owns so much now such as Marvel one could now argue that the best Disney soundtrack is actually “Iron Man” one’s soundtrack, but that isn’t exactly “Disney” in rating you know? 🙂
Also if you bring in Pixar that opens up for “Cars” and “Meet The Robinsons” but again they are mostly known as being two separate companies to most who would vote so it was just nice you limited it to actual Disney branded movies.
Out of curiosity, are you thinking about doing a Pixar Soundtrack discussion?
I will take you remembering iTunes as a consolation. Ha.
“Phineas & Ferb” was definitely a surprise delight series when I saw it airing; it treats viewers as intelligent beings and never seemed to talk down to the audience. It was about embracing your nerd side. It is definitely a classic series I feel! Is it my favorite Disney series? No that’s “Gargoyles” but for modern Disney it may have been the bests and now I’m missing Disney Channel. 🙁
I know technically the Disney Channel Is still on air but they don’t show anything new like they use to create series. And sadly they don’t even air all their series, they just repeat a limited few. How about brining back “Kim Possible” or “Wizards Of Waverly Place”; heck get crazy and reach into the vault and show something like “Bonkers” or “Darkwing Duck”! Maybe they’re hoarding it all for the streaming service but I just miss being able to flip over onto Disney and having actual choices of content to see and watching the channel more than just on the weekend for the movies it might air.
Ah, yes, I totally forgot about Jeremiah and Rachel’s pitch! That would be a very interesting one and could be very different. Speaking of bracket battles, there is actually another one coming soon, so stay tuned for that! ?
Yeah, it was a bit of a bummer when it came to the miscommunication. JJ interpreted “soundtracks” as “singular soundtrack songs”; I took it as a whole album. Though I think we got our points across pretty well.
And yes, on Disney being so widespread now, me and JJ chose to put limitations on our selections. We’ve said that we think the center of Disney comes from their own studios’ animation, so we stuck with that.
A Pixar soundtrack discussion? Possibly. JJ brought up doing it, so we might. But JJ hasn’t seen all of the Pixar movies. He’s seen some, but not them all. So, I’d love to! But it wouldn’t be the same unless I got JJ to watch more of them. So until he does watch some more, me and JJ won’t, but maybe we can throw the idea to the other teams, and see if they want to tackle it (and maybe even have a guest on ?
And, I’m sure you can put this together: I love Phineas & Ferb. In fact, I was talking with some friends just a couple hours ago on best cartoon series, and that show was tied with my top. I’d really recommend watching “How Phineas And Ferb Did the ‘Impossible'” on YouTube, it was really eye-opening on the show. I could go on, and on, and on about how great the show is, but I could leave that for another episode or something ? I’m thrilled for the movie coming next week.
When it comes to Disney Channel, I throw a look at some of the shows/movies on there. There are some good; not great, but not bad. One show I’d recommend (the show I’d arguably consider the best show of all time in terms of storytelling) is Gravity Falls. That’s a really fantastic show, and would’ve never thought such a great show would land on Disney Channel. I’m currently watching “The Owl House” on Disney Channel that’s currently going on, which actually has some of the team from Gravity Falls. I enjoy watching it; doesn’t waste my time, but I can still laugh and enjoy parts of it.
