The Fear Reaper a.k.a. Scarecrow is out to help everyone conquer fear by making them become their fear. Just like he did. He creates an army in Arkham and then goes after Jim. Bruce gets out of jail but he and Alfred come to an impasse. Selina, Tabitha and Barbara are reunited but will they survive?

The Fear Reaper:

GU69 - The Fear Reaper - Jim

Jonathan Crane (Charlie Tahan) has conquered fear by becoming his demon.  He has become Scarecrow.  He is out to reap the fear of others setting them free by making them become their demons.  He heads to Gotham Asylum and to find Warden Reed (Damian Young).  It seems that the three years that Jonathan was there he got not counseling only drugs and shock treatments. So he doses Reed with the fear toxin. It seems that Reed’s fear is clowns and he goes off shooting people (who appear to him as clowns) until he becomes one himself.

Jim and Harvey lost Crane’s trail and head back to the station.  There Penguin comes in with an ultimatum.  Capture Crane within 24 hours or admit defeat and surrender the GCPD to Penguin’s rule.  Jim’s hand is forced.  Harvey says Crane is at the Asylum. Jim tries to rally the troops but it falls flat and even Harvey won’t join him.  Harvey is faced with a choice stick by the GCPD and keep them as captain to one day fight Penguin or follow Jim and lose the GCPD.  Later Jim gets Harvey’s choice but he first has to face Scarecrow alone.

Jim fights his way through the asylum until he comes face to face with Scarecrow.  Jonathan reveals himself and his plan and then doses Jim.  Jim’s greatest fear is having let Lee down.  He sees her in a tub having slit her wrists.  She tells him it is all his fault.  An image of Scarecrow urges him to follow her to death, because it is what she would want for him.  That breaks the toxin’s control.  He confronts Jonathan and Jonathan runs.  Jim is surrounded by the inmates Scarecrow has dosed.  In defending himself he discovers that water counteracts the toxin and sets off the sprinklers.  But Scarecrow has escaped.

Back at the GCPD, Penguin creates his own police force offering 3 times the pay for cops who work for him.  Harvey takes Jim for a drink and they lament the changes. Harvey says they need an army to fight Penguin.  He says he misses the days when Falcone ruled.  This gives Jim an idea. Harvey tries to talk him out of it but to no avail.

Fear The Sirens:

GU69 - The Fear Reaper - Trio

Selina and Tabitha both gets invitations to a building.  They enter to find Barbara.  She is alive, this is Gotham after all.  Her new endeavor it to be the weapons supplier for Penguin’s army of criminal license holders. But she will only do it if she has Selina & Tabitha on board. Tabbs refuses, but Barbara encourages Selina to talk with her.  Later Penguin, Zsasz, and Ivy show up.  Penguin demands a business license fee and gun tax to let her run the business. Plus if she and the other Sirens step out of line Zsasz will end them.  All Ivy wants it to help but gets shut down. Penguin asks Barbara two questions we all are wondering.  How did she survive and who is funding her?

Selina says that she wants to get back at all the men who have hurt her.  She can’t do that on her own but the three of them are a force to be reckoned with.  Ivy shows up to try to talk them in to joining Barbara. Plus she wants to join them. She says she gets no respect from Penguin and wants power. But Tabbs shuts her down and forces her out.  Tabitha tells Selina to go to Babbs and say they will work together but conditions must be met.

Tabitha and Selina show up and the condition is Barbara must loose a hand just like Butch and Tabitha had to.  Barbara agrees and does not flinch when Tabbs brings the cleaver down. Tabitha chops in front of Babbs’ hand and says she trusts her for now.  The Sirens are back and the men of Gotham will learn to fear them!

Ivy has had it with her lack of power and strength.  She goes to an herbalist and takes several potions made by powerful shamans.  They begin to warp her and change her. It looks like Poison Ivy is now growing in Gotham.

Never Fear The Dark Knight Is Here:

GU69 - The Fear Reaper - Bruce

Bruce is locked up at the GCPD.  Alfred brought Wayne Industries best and most expensive lawyer to get him out.  Jim see him there and asked what happened.  Bruce says he was searching for Selina on the rooftop when he accidentally fell into a robbery. Jim lets him go with a promise to talk later.  Lucius Fox (Chris Chalk) is ever observant and sees the dust and residue on Bruce’s clothes.  Alfred and Bruce try to explain it off as rock climbing.  Fox knows better.

Bruce is headed back onto the streets to patrol. Alfred says he is not ready and he won’t support him.  Bruce feels alive out there and goes anyway.  Bruce spots a robbery and goes after the gang that got away last time.  But it is a trap.  They easily lure him in and capture him.  They don’t know who he is, except for one who thinks he looks familiar. Bruce accesses the situation and surroundings and makes his escape. But the leader gets him outside and Bruce looks done for, until Alfred knocks the guy out.

They begin their arguments back at Wayne Manor, but are interrupted by Lucius. True to the Lucius we see in the comics and in the Nolan films, He has guessed what Bruce is doing.  He brings a lightweight uniform that is bulletproof.  Gloves and boots that grip and a long range communication system to assist when “rock climbing.”

We see Bruce running and jumping from roof to roof and using then new gear.  Alfred is there instructing him via headset.  He gives him the great advice of always keeping his face covered and has supplied him with a mask.  He may not be Batman yet, but the criminals of Gotham will start to fear the Dark Knight soon!

Closing Thoughts:

I was impressed with the start of the Scarecrow we know and fear. Charlie Tahan is doing a great job of portraying him.  We see the start of the Poison Ivy from the comics.  The Sirens are now on the scene as a strong group.  Plus we have Bruce making real steps towards becoming Batman. I loved that this episode answered some questions but left us asking more. I felt it was a stronger episode than the first, but that is OK since episode 1 set things up.  I can’t wait to see what the producers are going to do next!  Thanks to John McGrail, co-host of Triplecast and our unofficial third co-host, for helping out this week! Karen will be back this week and ready to talk Gotham!
