Hog wild times are afoot in Gotham with Professor Pyg (Michael Cerveris) out to end the corruption in the GCPD. Jim and Harvey are are on the hunt for him but he is ready for them. Ed and Grundy are making out like bandits at Cherry’s club. Sofia is surprising Oswald at every step.
A Hog Day Afternoon:
Professor Pyg (Fringe alumni Michael Cerveris) is tracking down all the cops on Penguin’s payroll. The only cop he seems to like is Jim. He sees Jim as a kindred spirt and wants Jim to help in the mission. Harvey and Jim are trying to trace down Pyg and have to fight to get answers. Jim has to go to Penguin for help. Penguin gives him the name of a criminal. Jim and Harvey question him. He has been in charge of finding a hog or two for the Professor. After the the Professor takes out 2 more cops, they catch a lead on a van that was at the scene. Harper finds a location and they are off.
Harvey & Jim arrive at Pyg location and discover a cop with a pig mask on and tied up. Harvey is working to free him and Jim is taking off the pig head. But our not so good Professor has left them a (Joker like) surprise. As Jim pulls off the head it pulls a string that is attached to a grenade in the cop’s belly. They run off but not before being knocked out by the blast. A groggy Jim awakes strapped to a chair. He learns that Pyg wants to weed out the corruption in the GCPD even if it means killing half the force. He tells Jim that Harvey is dirty and he needs to stay away from him. Jim tries to find out how he knows all the things he knows about the force, but gets no answers. Pyg in turn tries to convince him to join the fight. Harvey wakes up and Pyg has to attend to him. Jim frees himself, calls for backup and rushes to get to Harvey. Pyg cuts Harvey’s throat just deep enough. Jim has to choose to save Harvey or follow Pyg. Jim saves Harvey.
In the hospital, Jim talks with Harvey and finds out the level of kickbacks he has been taking. Harvey says it is all because of his bills and ebts. He tells Harvey it stops now. Meanwhile Pyg tends to his herd of pigs telling them to sleep well because the axe falls tomorrow.
Hog Wild Fight Club:
Cherry has cleared Solomon Grundy to fight. But Lee is surprised to see him and Ed there. Ed explains Grundy is no longer Butch and that is good for him. Ed needs help because is no longer The Riddler and needs the money. He says that She could help him out and cure him of the lack of smarts, but she refuses. In the first fight, Grundy goes down and will not fight until Ed says too. Then he easily wins. After wards Lee patches him up but tells him he bleeds swamp water not blood and has no heart beat. She again refuses Ed’s request for help.
Ed follows her home. She has a line of people waiting for her. She has an agreement with Cherry. As long as she patches up the fight club people she can run her clinic. Ed tries to blackmail her and fails miserably. When she runs out of meds she has to go to Ed for money. She explains that she is helping the people of the Narrows because they were hardest hit by the Tech virus and she feels responsible. She takes the money and will see Ed to help him get his smarts back.
Grundy fights another round with a guy who looks like one of the WWE Road Warriors. Grundy goes hog wild and demolishes the guy and Ed reaps the benefits.
Sofia Goes Whole Hog On Penguin:
Sofia has a good meeting with Oswald and he invites her for a lunch “date” the next day. The next day he pushes Jim off and waits for her to show up. But she doesn’t show and Zsasz says she called and isn’t coming. The Penguin assigns Zsasz to follow her. Zsasz sees she has bought an old hotel and is meeting with politicians. When this is reported, Penguin thinks that she is building a fortress to hold up in when she attacks Him. He and Zsasz head over ready to make heads roll. He confronts her on her way out and forces her to take him to the hotel.
When they arrive they find the hotel has been turned into an orphanage. She says that she doesn’t want him to end up like her dad. She did this as a surprise to help his image and show how much she cares for him. He is surprised and pleased.
Sofia has been confronted by Jim because he sees nothing but her getting close to him. She says to give her time. She will have Penguin in the palm of her hand. If not she will leave Gotham or stay what ever he likes.
Closing Thoughts:
This episode was an actors showcase for both Michael Cerveris and Crystal Reed. They both displayed manipulation and power, but did it in vastly different ways. Cerveris was a menacing character who scarred us just by the way he carried himself and moved. He didn’t even speak until the end of the episode. When he did it was so menacing and bold. It left me ready for more and frightened for Gotham at the same time. Reed played a master manipulator. She played sweet, innocent, and caring to make Oswald feel bad for mistrusting her. This also drew him further into her web. On the other side she played tough with Jim, matching strength for strength. It was a great episode and we have more to come.
