Ghosts are haunting Gotham. Penguin’s father has risen from the grave.  Jim is trying to outrun Mario’s ghost, and Dwight is trying to bring back Jerome. Can Gotham survive the ghosts?

Ghosts:

Penguin is out of sorts since Ed has left his campaign and he wants Ed back.  He gets to city hall to find the press waiting form him, but they are all thrilled because of his success as mayor and the crime rate drop.  He new chief of staff, Tarquin, informs Oswald of an opportunity.  Gotham’s version of Barbara Walters, Margaret Hearst wants to interview Oswald.  She will do it live, at city hall and on her terms only.  Oswald agrees.  He sees his dead dad, Elijah Van Dahl (Paul Rubens), in the hall but he vanishes.

Oswald is shaken from seeing ghosts and is visited by Elijah that night saying. Elijah says he can’t rest until his body is at rest.  The GCPD lets him know Elijah’s body has been dug up.  Later, Elijah visits saying don’t trust the birthday boy.  The day of the interview, Oswald hears the staff singing happy birthday to Tarquin.  Oswald checks Tarquin’s office to find muddy foot prints and his father’s body in the closet.  Tarquin comes in oblivious and the Penguin snaps.  He kills Tarquin and then has to go to his TV interview.  He is shaken and Hearst’s questions do not help.  She brings up the ghosts of his past (murdering Galvin, Arkham, and more).  He cracks fully when he sees his father walking around the hall.  He runs off to chase him.  He finds Tarquin’s body gone as well as Elijah’s and runs out the building.

Elijah has slipped across the way to the underpass where Ed is waiting.  Turns out it was no ghost but Hugo’s creation, Clayface.  Barbara & Tabitha show up and Ed reveals his plan.  He wants to kill Oswald with a thousand cuts.  Tear down his mayoral roll, his crime lord business, and his sanity.  Then he will be put down.  Barbara is all for that! Who knows what other ghosts Penguin will start to see thanks to Ed.

Ghosts of Rivals:

GU57 - Ghosts - Standoff

Jim has been cleared by the police of his killing Mario.  But it seems Mario’s ghost is looming over Jim.  He wants to apologize to Lee and Carmine, but Harvey tells Jim that is not possible.  Carmine wants blood for blood and Lee feels the same way.  Carmine unleashes Victor Zsasz on Jim.  They dance with bullets and finally end in a Mexican standoff with Zsasz having the drop on Harvey and Jim on Zsasz.

Lee has heard the results of the blood test the GCPD ran on Mario.  So she goes to interview Barnes in Arkham.  She wants to know if Mario could have lived with the virus.  She goes to find Barns but finds only The Executioner.  Knowing Jim probably saved her, she begs Carmine to call off the hit.  He calls her out saying she still loves Jim.  Carmine lays Mario to rest and honors Lee by calling off the hit.

Ghosts of the Past:

GU57 - Ghosts - Wayne Manor

Selina gives her mom., Maria Kyle (Ivana Milicevic), hell for leaving her 11 years ago.  Five year old Selina was left at Saint Maria’s orphanage (this makes Selina 16).  Maria was left there as a kid and that is how she go her name.  Maria was in trouble and couldn’t take Selina with her.  Selina cannot live with that and sends Maria away.

Maria heads to Wayne Manor.  Bruce & Alfred are discussing the crystal owl they recovered from the Court of the Owls safe.  When Maria knocks, Bruce stashes it in a back hall.  The sun brings out a map/equations/mystery display (that goes unnoticed).  Maria has a box of Selina’s things and Maria wants Bruce to give it to her.  Bruce asks Maria to stay in Gotham and he reaches out to Selina.  After Bruce talks some sense into Selina and gives her the box, Selina and Maria make up.

After a fun family dinner at Wayne Manor, with the Kyle’s pick-pocketing Alfred, they spend the night.  The next day Alfred & Bruce take Maria to her hotel. But the ghosts of her past have caught up with her.  Cole is demanding money.  Selina comes in and says Bruce will pay.  Cole now has the Wayne fortune on his mind.  Maria says they have to warn Alfred (whom she has taken a shine to and he to her) and Bruce because Cole is bad news.

Cult of Ghosts:

GU57 - Ghosts - Dwight Jerome

Dwight (David Dastmalchian) is working in the city morgue, but he is in hot water because one of the bodies is missing and she wound up in the GCPD lab after she died again.  Harvey gets the scoop and finds out Dwight used to work at Indian Hill.  Dwight has assembled a following.  He has brought the Cult of the Joker together.  They dress up like Jerome (Cameron Monaghan) and they know his every word.  Jim and Harvey break up their meeting, but Dwight gets away.  Turns out he and his assistant are taking the Indian Hill techniques and re-animating corpses.  Why? They don’t want a ghost. They want to bring back Jerome.  We close seeing his smiling face in a cryogenic tank ready for them.

Closing Thoughts:

Wow, “Ghosts” kicked off Gotham’s Winter triple with a bang.  We get to see Elijah back as well as Jerome back.  We got to dig into a bit of Selina’s past.  We got to see Zsasz again and so much more.  People have been begging to see Jerome back and we are getting him.  I loved the episode and what the writers are doing.  They know we only get three episodes before a long break, so they are making it worth it! I cannot wait until next week!

Karen and I talked about the director of this ep Eagle Egilsson.  He is pretty epic looking.
