The quest for the totems continues. Nyxly tracks the Humanity Totem to the pocket of a martial arts fighter in town for a match. The imp easily steals the item and wonders why there was no gauntlet to pass to wield its powers. The citizens in the vicinity of the arena erupt into violence with their humanity stripped from them. The Superfriends game night is abruptly interrupted by Nyxly’s glee at an easy victory. Kara’s psychic connection to the imp continues to be an asset.
William has used his friendship with Kara to win himself entrance into the Tower. He is going to write stories about the Superfriends. This should make Andrea very happy. J’onn must lay some ground rules to make sure that missions and secret identities are not compromised.
Lena continues to work on her magic. I love that she continues to look at this new skill in a logical way. This honors her long standing character trait of the scientist that we know and love. Nia says that the way Lena speaks of magic reminds her of dream interpretation and offers to help. I really like the deepening friendship that is forming between these two characters.
Nothing in life is free and Nyxly learns there is a price to pay for activating the Humanity Totem. All the goodness and compassion that left the people of National City is now flooding Nyxly’s system. It is all these emotions that stop her from capturing the next totem of Hope.
Green Butterfly’s favorite part of the episode was getting to check back in on Esme. The cute and charming alien girl with a heart for justice. At first glance when Kelly arrives it looks like Esme has found some happiness. However, when her foster parents are faced with a heartless hoard, they leave the little girl outside the door. They beg her to use her fire breathing power to defend them. This is a power Esme has but has not learned how to utilize and control. She is left alone scared facing the angry mob. Kelly and Alex rush to rescue her. Will Kelly and Alex give Esme a forever home? This butterfly sure hopes so. Who better to raise and protect this little alien girl than the woman who shared a bedroom with one for years? Seems like the right choice to me.
Nyxly relinquished the Humanity Totem. All that compassion is getting in the way of her ultimate goal of taking over the world. Now she has her sights set back on the Netherlands and the totem of Hope. Supergirl and her team are focusing on the totem of Dreams. Who will win this race? I think it is still too early to say. We will have to tune in next week and find out. Until then this is your eye in the sky Green Butterfly wishing you a Super Week!

Some blog post comments…
“This honors her long standing character trait of the scientist that we know and love.” – Katie fighting until the bitter end for some consistency with her character; maybe that was her one season final request – continuity at least for Lena ha! 🙂
“I really like the deepening friendship that is forming between these two characters.” – too bad it’s in the final season instead of being built upon from the previous year at least.
I actually don’t think fire breathing is Esme’s power, to me it looked like she was reflecting back the fire breath of the guy not that she had it herself. If she does maybe it’s again not fire specifically but a mimic power – she’s like Rogue from Marvel in if she can see it in this case, instead of touch the person, she can copy power to use for a bit?
“Will Kelly and Alex get to adopt Esme?” – yes. It’s too late in the series for them to get anyone else as Joey has Orlando. Maybe for like an episode we see some issues with it but on the whole we only have 6 episodes left and two of those will be the series final so that’s really only 4 and that’s not enough time to do adoption drama now so in the grand scheme any issues will be but a blip on the radar as they say and we’ll end with Kelly, Alex, and Esme as a family; my only questions are when do they tell her about Auntie Kara and when does she get her mandated superhero suit as that’s how things work now in the genre – you’re either a suit or your no one important. *sigh*
I know I talk a lot of smack about this series now but I really do hope I can finish the last 6 episodes on my own terms, it’s hot garbage but it’s my hot garbage you know? Sadly my cable provider and the CW, along with ABC who has my “Station 19” and “Grey’s Anatomy”, are fighting right now and so they’re locking the networks out for the week at points so I might have to miss some trash piles – hopefully not all of them though! How can I properly discuss things with my MOS family if I can’t see things?! Yes I know there’s the app you can download but it’s not the same as watching on a large screen to see all the details you can complain about now or when they slip up and have a good moment you can enjoy it in large ratio and easy to rewind fashion instead of having to fight phone sliders to get to 30 seconds previously but end up at 5 minutes back. 🙁 Ugh…it’s just another thing in the life of “Supergirl” fans I feel; like our heroine we are made of steel to put up with things like this, ha!
Onto the podcast…
“protect from those who would do us harm” – who knew that would be the writers in the final years! Ha.
Season 4 – when the series officially became the testing ground for Superman content instead of being “Supergirl”. ?
Lex only loves himself so it’s a joke from the start to call them love interests; someone or both will be in this just to use the other which is not love and is also a waste of time screen wise because you know this plot won’t introduce anything new about the characters involved. Great feedback as always Leslie.
“Moments From The Bottom” maybe? You sit on your bottom but also we’re at the bottom so it works all the way around. Ha
Why if 10,000 were in the radius were only 100 affected? So many issues with these plots now.
We miss you Monty!
I agree Justina, I read Andrea as in emergency mode because as you said all she has left is CatCo and so she will do whatever it takes to keep it going because if it fails she is done at this point as far as she’s concerned. Tragically to her she will go from a multi-millionaire to just a simple millionaire…because you know even with failed businesses the owners at the point they fail solo have money put away so next to say Kara she’s going to be okay financially. Andrea is one of the only good parts left to an episode each week so I’m here for her giving everyone a hard time. 🙂
Again I thought the harasser breathed fire at Esme first and she blocked it not the other way around because it was the dad who knocked the guy out and they ran away; for me the way it was edited it looked more like Esme was blocking the power not producing it. In regards to Esme I did love Kelly saying that even though the kid had powers it was still the foster parents job to protect her not the other way around because yes she has a gift but she’s still just a kid!
Just because the item is in the Netherlands doesn’t mean that’s where it originated from Justina. Although again plot…why is Nxy if she’s dressed as Security starting at the gate? Why would she not just act like she’s on shift and walk around inside already and thus be closer to the totem and something else inside stops her from taking it? It makes no sense and like they’re just writing things to happen so another thing can happen instead of it feeling like an earned moment.
I disagree Justina, it’s not the item which is inherently evil (unless specifically said) but how you use it; yes the flower fights mammals but it’s being used to stop a “bad guy” so doesn’t that make it good?
Justina doing all the hard comic work this week! Ha 🙂
TELLING William who everyone is is one thing as that means he didn’t know himself…if he comes out and says he’s known the whole time that’s where the issues are because how does he figure it out (beyond the fact they are so obvious at times) when Lena couldn’t and she interacts with them more often and in similar ways to William – i.e. talking to them and just listening to them speak?! This woman figured out Rhea was an alien but the use of the word gods SHE KNOWS Kara IS ONE TOO! ? I can grant them that maybe Lena didn’t know off the bat Kara is Supergirl, maybe it does realistically take her like a day to put those two together because she was trying to run a company at the same time, but she had to know way before they told her Kara is an alien from a different planet. So yeah if they tell William I won’t be mad but if he says he’s known and then explains how he knew and it’s something logical…then yeah rage because how does this random dude know but the smartest woman in the city doesn’t?
You’re really just going to go watch a Steelers game John we know. 😉
I totally agree with Leslie, it made NO sense why the team would leave the citizens there. Even if you say rather city jails were full the tower has everything so surely it has some of the collector cases in in it from the DEO desert base so they could have made a holding pen there! There was nothing shown on screen that could harm Kara and the majority couldn’t hurt J’onn so they easily could have at least contained the people but no; this is why I say there’s some dead people in that group now because the way they were bashing on each other what stopped them from continuing that until the person under them was dead? We saw people beating others with a bat so even if the person walked off after they went down that’s still internal bleeding which isn’t good! The Superfriends just straight up let people die this week but we’ll never hear them admit that. It wasn’t even like they left someone there to try and control the crowds at points (which realistically would have been a logical reason for character absences at a point) they’re just not there! If you let DEO Alex handle that situation it would have been solved in 10 minutes flat, no you aren’t going to like the fact she deployed sleeping gas and locked everyone up probably but the job would get done with a lot less property damage and physical injuries. I miss DEO Alex!
“Why can’t Lena go to Ireland?!” – lol.
NNNOOOPE….we are not doing this again, Kara can do both – hold a job and be Supergirl she just can’t do both at the same time literally. I like the stuff about Nia and her sister (even if she is just a dream version because nightmare = Nia focus episode because dreams) but the rest do this sounds really bad already.
“…she hangs up her cape for good.” – ?. “I’ll miss some of those people very much.” – I hope one of them is Chyler; as John said it’s going to be weird if those two don’t talk again past this project. Also the langue of “some of those people” just confirms to me that this was not a mutual decision involving the show end unless you say they agreed to disagree and split; again I don’t think we’ll ever learn the truth of how it all fell apart but for me this says something was definitely up behind the scenes. Melissa should definitely get to keep the pants suit costume because she has earned a suit; if they’re not going to put the season one suit in a museum like it should be then give that to her because again – earned it. I wish they had talked more about “Supergirl” and its impact on female series and kind of paving the way for “Batwoman” and “Stargirl” and what does it mean to Melissa to have played this character who’s become such a symbol for women and how does it feel to have that end now and ask if she’s okay with it instead of talking about the book but maybe it was mandated they have to talk more on the book because talking about the show is still too fresh in feelings for some especially if you factor in behinds the scene possible drama which lead to the end before its time, and make no mistake – the series is ending before its time.
Lena is only as smart as the writers say she is so if she didn’t figure it out it’s because the writers said so. They kept her ignorant became they wanted the reveal to hurt. Would Lena actually have been that hurt by lex’s reveal if she had figured it out long before?
Whoops, got my aftershow comment in on Wednesday, but forgot to send my feedback!
I completely had the same thought watching this episode in regards to this is the second episode in a row where the totem’s effect is the same. Just people beating each other up. What’s creative about that? Not much. I said it before with the courage totem, but the taking away of someone’s humanity could be adopted into all kinds of creative outcomes! But no, they just had the same handful of people fighting all over the city.
There’s no way Supergirl needed back up in that first scene at the wrestling club. She could have laid all those guys out single-handedly. But no. This series doesn’t seem to want to give Kara her power.
Though, yes, Dreamer’s one move on that guy was awesome, and the catching of bullets is always fun to watch. Just wish there was more.
I agree Justina, the way they filmed Alex and Kelly saving Esme was weird – all offscreen and then a strange slow-motion walk up the stairs? Wha? And who decided the best way to tell this story was to have her foster parents leave her outside and ask a 5/6 year old to protect them? WHA?
You’re heading to my neck of the woods, John! I’m not in Pitt, but I am a Pennsylvanian.
I miss the DEO too. The DEO sets plus having agents in the scenes, people walking around, just gave more groundedness to the series and a sense of place. Everyone being isolated in the tower feels empty. The DEO gave the scenes some life and movement.
i don’t know if you read the reviews on spoilertv but dj riter makes a great point. how did alex and kelly even know esme was in danger?
Add it to the list of possible errors in the name of “cool action shot”.
That said I will say they did have that city map at a point showing the spread of people so maybe Kelly recognized the area and wanted to check on her to be safe?
whether that’s true or not you’re certainly at least trying to explain it unlike the “professional” writers
