Hell is a place and an emotional state. Gotham and our characters have been in both states of hell since we left them. Jim is in hell because he has lost Lee. Bruce is in hell trying to find out about the Court of Owls. Our villains are in hell. Each person seems to be trying to reign in hell.
Better to Reign in Hell:
The theme for, at least the first half of, the season is Mad City. Well the city hasn’t completely gone to hell with the escape of the Indian Hill experiments, but things are not pretty. We have a time jump of six months. Barnes (Michael Chiklis) is back as captain of the GCPD. He is walking with a crutch and is hiding his pain. Ousted Mayor James (Richard Kind), is back in office playing the PR game. But the GCPD and the mayor’s office are not going to get off easy. Valerie Vale (Jamie Chung) is on the job for the Gotham Chronicle. She is an on the ball reporter who doggedly goes after the story. She has goes after Jim for the scoop and is not fooled by his ways. Her dad and brothers were cops so she knows the beat.
Jim the Bounty Hunter from Hell:
Jim left Gotham to find Lee and make things right. He gets dressed up and brings flowers. But he finds a very different Lee. She is laughing and having a good time with a new man. He leaves downcast and lacking purpose. Six months later finds him as a bounty hunter. He is fighting through his emotional hell by taking the Indian Hill escapees off the street. We find him fighting a ridged back monster (Killer Croc or maybe not we see one who looks more like him later) who is stealing from a pharmacy. He is loosing until a truck takes out the monster.
During the Mayor’s press conference the Penguin interrupts. He states that the GCPD has ignored the info he gave them to he is sharing it with the press. The mind behind the Indian Hill escapees is Fish Mooney. He ask Jim why he has not gone after her. Jim says where’s the money?
Valerie feeds Jim info and they go after a lead to Fish. Jim goes ofter Ms. Peabody, who is in protective custody, He knows that people are using Valerie to find Peabody and they show up. A speedster whisks, a bane-like woman attacks, then and Man-Bat attacks Jim. Valerie gets a photo of it all.
Bruce’s Fiery Stand:
Bruce and Alfred have been in Switzerland for the six months. But they have not been idol. They have found out information about the Court of Owls and are taking the battle to them. Bruce walks into hell and confronts Wayne Enterprises board about the conspiracy. He calls them out and calls for a meeting with the Court. He tries to warn Selina to run for cover because the Court will be after them. She blows him off. The Court is notified and the head of the Court sends a Talon after Bruce. Alfred puts up a good fight but is no match. Bruce is taken to the Court.
Fish and the Hell Raisers:
Fish is happy with her new powers but each time she uses them they drain her. The drugs that they are stealing from pharmacies and labs are becoming ineffective. She needs a real solution. She captures Peabody and finds out that her body is rejecting the DNA. Only Hugo Strange can fix her, but Peabody has no clue where he is. One of Fish’s hell raisers, Marv can drain years off of people. He turns Peabody into a mummy. Ivy Pepper wants in on the action by Selina says no. Ivy is caught watching and threatens to tell. Marv goes after her and starts to age Ivy before she slips into the rain runoff pipes. Oh and earlier, Ivy let doppelgänger Bruce know that he looks like Bruce Wayne. Where that will lead us who know!
Penguin & Riddler, Barbara & Tabitha Alliances from Hell:
Penguin feels guilty that Ed is still in Arkham. He goes and visits him regularly. They have formed an alliance and they are keeping each other sharp and sane. It is great to see this team up happening and how well they play off of each other. Penguin is pushed by Riddler to go after Fish. He does!
Barbara is back in Stabby Babs territory. She and Tabitha have opened a night club, The Sirens. Penguin & Butch want to provide them protection. They refuse. Butch just wants Tabitha back. He sends in muscle to force them back under Penguin’s umbrella. They take out all but the leader of the group. Penguin sees the situation and grants them freedom, until Butch smartens up and then Penguin will kill Tabitha!
Closing Thoughts:
It is great to be back! It has been a long summer without Gotham. But it is great to see the writers have not slacked off. We see fast paced storylines. New quality characters have been introduced and we have new mysteries to look forward to. Gotham may be Mad City this season, but so far we are loving it. I’m, Geoff, still not crazy about Fish Mooney, but so far the writers seem to have a handle on her character and a clear direction. I’m going to run with them until they prove me wrong. I’m excited to see the characters developing and the changes they will go through this season.
News:
Next Week: Next week’s ep is “Burn The Witch” Fish Mooney (guest star Jada Pinkett Smith) takes matters into her own hands to locate Hugo Strange (guest star BD Wong), forcing Gordon to reluctantly team up with journalist Valerie Vale (guest star Jamie Chung) to find her.
