I think it’s possible Danny’s death was accidental, he was struck by a car driven by someone having an illicit romance or headed to some nefarious or clandestine acitivity. The killer had help from someone with a motive for covering up the circumstances.
Here’s my theory after seeing the second episode. I’ll update as the show goes on.
I believe Dean Iverson, Chloe’s boyfriend is the killer.
Things in Gracepoint are bleak. Businesses closing, tourism is down. People need to find a way to make ends meat.
We know Dean supplied the cocaine to Chloe that was found in her room.
I believe Dean and Mark (and possibly others) are trafficking cocaine.
The cut in the fence from the beginning of episode 1 is where they bring the drugs ashore.
Mark was waiting for Dean in the lookout parking lot and caught on camera.
Dean drives a motorcycle so he would park it at the lookout and get in with Mark to go about their business.
Danny suspected his father was up to something, possibly with Dean, as seen in his computer journal.
Danny found Marks stash of money and hid it under his bed.
Mark didn’t have the money and therefore was late in paying his advertising bill to the newspaper as seen in episode 1.
Kathy the newspaper editor may be involved and the check was a drug related payment.
Danny went to the lookout and saw Dean’s parked motorcycle and decided to wait.
The opening scene from the pilot was Danny looking down at a boat that his dad and Dean were using to traffic the drugs.
After their job, Mark dropped Dean off at the parking lot and went back home.
Dean spotted Danny at the lookout cabin and confronted him.
Danny revealed that he knows what they’re up to and that he saw them in the boat, Dean panics and kills him.
Dean then moves the body to make it look like a suicide.
Mark doesn’t know Dean is the killer
Garcia the CSI said the only footprints they found at the cabin were, kids, the CSIs and dog walkers.
Susan the dog walker, who also takes care of the lookout cabin, saw the discarded skateboard while walking her dog and picked it up.
The backpacker seen by Jack Reinhold, the wildlife recorder is a red herring just like the monkey doll was.
Danny and Tom Miller could have been investigating together. Possibly Joe Millier is involved with the cocaine smuggling.
Tom deleted his phone messages and erased his hard drive because he was scared that their investigation led to Danny’s death and he was afraid he would be next.
Joe may have been questioning his son Tom to find out how much he knows about what’s going on and if he knows his father is involved.
As of right now this is my theory. Anyone see any holes in it?
Mark — your thought process is great – and I’m going to throw one wrinkle into it. I think that the missing kids (girls?) in the San Francisco area are related to this case. I suspect our killer has been “running” cocaine for quite a while, and had to move his operation when things got too hot in SF. That would throw our local priest into play since he recently “got back” into town — from where and why, we don’t know.
I think Danny and Tom might have been earning some “side money” by watching for boats and/or signaling lights at night for Jack, under the “Wildlife” guise. They probably didn’t know what they were actually doing, but finally figured it out – and I agree that Tom erased everything because he is scared.
That would put Jack and Dean in the mix, and Susan is being paid to hear/see/speak nothing. I’m putting my money on the good Reverend as the mastermind and killer.
I agree with Barb on this. I didn’t put nearly as much thought into this as you guys have so this is just intuition. There is just something about the Reverend that makes me keep coming back to him as the killer. But then I may also be taking the bait that “all the characters that they show you doing something shady are probably not the killer” which crosses too many off the list. Of course I still #SuspectEveryone.
Assuming that the psychic guy is correct, it seems as though the killer must be a family member or close friend of Danny’s.
One person, whom I believe we should be able to rule out, is Tom Miller. After Ellie tells him about Danny’s death, only then does he go and delete the messages on his phone and reformat his hard drive. Had he been the killer, wouldn’t it make sense that he would have already taken these actions? Seemed like this action was reflexive to the news.
I won’t vote twice but Joe and Gemma are tied. They could even have worked together, or one manipulated the other to commit it cover up the crime.
Joe edged up only because I could see him deeply involved in the drug trade and/or an affair because he feels emasculated as a house husband. Gemma was either his drug partner and/or paramour.
Tom is protecting Dad.
The dinner with Carver was a subterfuge to deflect suspicion and make Carver think Joe’s a terrible liar.
well — since i missed the deadline for submitting feedback this week, here are my thoughts. I have to agree with Bonita about Joe — he went up on my list this week. The whole buddy/buddy thing at dinner — didn’t buy it. I also wondered if he slipped something into Emmet’s drink and/or food to make him sick. Maybe a shot of tequila?
I also think our suspect list will shrink — all good British murder mysteries have a 2nd victim prior to the end of the book — so I’m betting Ray will be victim #2. His “visions” may hit a bit too close to home for the killer, and Ray will go bye-bye.
Paul’s still on my list — his “oh was that you” comment about the 4:30am sighting was bogus. He would know Beth’s profile and stance (but not Ellie). He’s had feelings for her for years — you know the person you love from a distance.
Strange moment when Mark washed his hands after fixing the drain – the way he looked at them as if regretting something — probably because he hit his son — but it didn’t move him up on my list.
Okay, so this week Vince looked pretty quilty, trying to dump it all on poor old Jack.
This week’s duo conspiracy theory is he and Dean and a drug trade. I don’t think I’m the first to suspect that but this week’s episode was framed in such away I can come behind that theory more.
How bittersweet sad it was to see Danny’s parents looking at his pictures together. This did more to pull me into the story than the loud dramatic moments of the Mob scene.
I’m with Clint on the poor way the show is scored. (Even though Clint always guns for my theories. 😉
I’m so glad to have you two riffing in my ear again.

Maybe it because he hasn’t been investigated, but I am really starting to suspect Carver in a split personality kind of way. He isn’t getting proper treatment for his illness so that’s my cooky theory.
I have no idea who killed Danny, but the obvious choice is Rev Paul, so what the hey I’ll go with that. :-p For a while, Danny’s dad seemed the likely suspect, but now I don’t know. Could be Tom, Danny’s friend, and it was accidental…
Still like Vince but Tom gets my vote this week. Even Kathy was acting odd.
Wonder if the skateboard was the murder weapon? And Susan has been trying to get either Tom or Vince to confess.
If it is Tom she may hope he’ll come clean do to seeing the skateboard.
If it’s Vince – could be Tom also was present at the murder and she’s trying to get him to be the witness because Vince has something on her.
That ….. was ….. good —- See Emilee — ALL my theories are pretty much wrong! 😉
