Doctor Who is back! The season 12 premiere, “Spyfall – Part 1” brings a new intensity to the Jodie Whittaker era of Doctor Who. James Bond spy-movie shenanigans are everywhere, as well as the return of an old “friend” of the Doctor!
“Spyfall – Part 1” not only leaves us with a few fantastic cliffhangers, but it also causes us to question whether everything we ever thought was a lie.

I’m with Wayne, I wish Graham had said yes to seeing the files on Doctor. I don’t know if a companion has ever had ever turned on Doctor before, I’ve been in and out on the series and mainly have only see Smith’s and Capaldi’s stuff outside of Whitaker’s, but could you imagine the drama if by seeing what’s in the files someone says they’re out or even helps Master some before Doctor kicks them out of the Tardis?! At the very least we could have maybe learned a new piece of information or had something in the files set up a season plot.
They weirdly to a degree, because it is also in character Doctor would trust Yaz so not check her off the bat, didn’t check Yaz so there’s no confirmation yet Jada that Yaz isn’t fully human unless I missed a scene. That would definitely be a unique character plot if they do go that route later and how does Yaz feel about that and what does it mean for her long term? How will Doctor feel letting down another companion arguably?
Have they said why they changed Masters? The last regeneration we saw was a gray haired man after the Missy identity. Was it just so the reveal could be a surprise because had the previous reboot been on screen everyone would have guessed; also does this mean Master is one step closer to his last life than Doctor because he regened yet again where as Doctor still looks like Jodie?
Saying everything is a lie is a dramatic beat but also has potential to go wrong in regards to what has been considered canon for decades now. They’re definitely going going have to handle that comment fallout delicately!
Master was definitely flirting with Yaz, which I will take even though I kind of lean more 13/Yaz, because I don’t want them to do Yaz/Ryan; just let him have your sister’s number Yaz! If she’s trying to protect him because her sister has a tendency to date and dump that’s fine but say that don’t drag out some triangle thing. Triangles are 99% misses more than not when it comes to handling so let’s just avoid that please!
For me this episode was like a 5 at best. There were some good moments but it just didn’t get me hyped for the season I have to say like last year’s premiere did.
I agree with Graham – Graham is the best companion out of the group; he’s got humor but he’s also serious when the moment comes, he had a good arc last season, and he feels lovable so what isn’t to like about him! I feel Yaz needs more to do because sadly as someone said on YouTube we know more about her grandmother than we do Yaz; she’s a cop so you’d think they’d use her skills there but nope. I get it was easier to do Graham and Ryan as the main point last season because of what happened with Grace but don’t forget about Yaz! This may seem unfair but I think this season should be Yaz’s season as far as companion stuff goes because again Ryan and Graham all all of last season outside of the “Demons Of Punjab” episode. Ryan himself going back to them as individuals isn’t bad but he does feel kind of there. Most of the Grace stuff really came from Graham’s feelings and Ryan didn’t really do anything stand out; I agree I think on the whole the group are good companions but the writers definitely need to work on exploring them all not just one or two at times…that said I still believe Yaz should get the lost companion time this year because she needs it and the boys had a lot last year so they can take the back burner 20% screen time while she gets 30% and the Doctor gets 50% because the show is called “Doctor Who”.
Thanks so much for the comment post, Aaron! Great thoughts in there. Looking forward to sharing it on the podcast this week! – Wayne
