The X files returned after a nearly two year hiatus and I was anticipating learning the truth. Our characters had been left in a state of chaos and uncertainty. Needless to say I was counting down the days until Wednesday. In the opening moments of the episode I was immediately confused. How did Mulder look so healthy? When we last saw him he was knocking on death’s door. Scully is unconscious and having seizures! Why?
This episode focuses heavily on the Cigarette Smoking Man. His name is revealed to be Carl but he says he has lived under many aliases over the years. He has stood in the shadows behind Presidents and Dictators covertly controlling situations. He has orchestrated lies he wants the American People to believe. He talks about the Spartan Virus which will attack people’s immune systems leaving them weak and vulnerable. Only a select few will be saved. A few selected by him. A world not created in God’s image but his.
Jeffrey Spender, his legitimate son, is getting anxious. For seventeen years he has hid Mulder and Scully’s son William and now people are looking for the boy. Scully is animent that her son be found as well. Even in an unconscious state her brain scans are pulsing. The changing colors in Morse Code. The message is clear. Find Him!
Mulder goes after The Cigarette Smoking Man. Mulder knows he is behind many things and probably in the center of this conspiracy too. Scully’s visions become more persistent. She says this is how it begins. The virus….the end. It is at this point that I begin to wonder were the events of the episode My Struggle Part Two all part of Scully’s visions. Have those events not taken place yet? That explains why Mulder is still healthy.
Agent Skinner tries to help Mulder and Scully by going directly to the source. Upon speaking to The Cigarette Smoking Man Skinner discovers some disturbing news. The Cigarette Smoking Man is planning to use William to manipulate Scully. He wants to bring her to his side. That is not the worst of the news that he shares. He also reveals that he is William’s Father. The title sequence has the words I want to believe then at the last second it changes to I want to lie. I really hope The Cigarette Smoking Man is lying. The thought of Scully being taken advantage of and deceived in that way is truly disturbing.
Scully and her Son appear to be sharing a physic connection. I think William will bring us closer to the truth. Will Scully be able to lead Mulder down a safer path or will he continue to run headlong towards his own demise? We will have to wait until Wednesday to find out. Will we get another chapter of mythology or a fun monster of the week? Only time will tell. One thing is for sure Darrell and Chip will be discussing it all on the We Still Believe Podcast. Conspiracies and questions continue to mount each week on the X Files.
