Beverly Hills Cop sees Eddie Murphy enter the buddy copy genera. This Detroit cop lands in Beverly Hills and must team up with the LAPD to solve the murder of his good friend. Sadly this brings the triple to a close but you can still catch John and Karen on Maid of Steel.
Beverly Hills Cop:
Axel Foley (Eddie Murphy) gets a visit from his buddy Mikey Tandino (James Russo). Mikey came to Detroit, but his California problems have followed him. Zack (Jonathan Banks) and another thug kill Mikey for stealing German bonds from the warehouse he worked at. They knocked out Axel first. Axel has had a bad day. First his undercover operation goes bust and makes him the laughing stock of the Detroit PD and then his Inspector chews him a new one. To top it all off, his childhood buddy is killed. He takes vacation time and drives to Beverly Hills to find out who killed Mikey and why.
The Beverly Hills is a huge change from Detroit. Axel checks in to a swanky hotel by pretending he is a Rolling Stone reporter. Then he heads to childhood friend Jenny Summers (Lisa Eilbacher) for help. She got Mikey the warehouse job and is devistated when she finds out Mikey is dead. The warehouse and the art gallery Jenny works at are owned by Victor Maitland (Steven Berkoff). Axel pays Victor a visit and ends up being thrown out a window and arrested for disturbing the peace.
At the BHPD, Axel is amazed at the computer technology. He is questioned by Detectives Rosewood (Judge Reinhold) and Taggart (John Ashton). Axel’s attitude causes Taggart to punch him. Lt. Bogomil (Ronny Cox) makes Taggart apologize and askes if Axel wants to press charges. They do things by the book. Bogomil has called Detroit and gotten the scoop on Axel. The word is to lay off Victor.
Jenny bails him out and they go to his hotel. He sends out room service to Rosewood and Taggart, who have followed them. He then bananas their tailpipe and leaves with Jenny. They go to the warehouse and discover coffee grounds (used to hide drugs) and see people pulling bonds out of boxes. They follow the van to a secured customs warehouse where the boxes are put back so they go through customs clean. Axel plays a customs agent and gets all the shipping info on the packages.
Later he gets into the back of Taggart & Rosewood’s car. He apologized for getting them in trouble. To make up for it he takes them to a strip club. They have club soda and he drinks. Rosewood is enjoying it all and Taggart is not happy. Axel sees two shady guys and points them out to Taggart. Axel distracts one and that guy pulls a gun. The two guys are there to rob the place. Axel, Taggart, and Rosewood take them down. Back at the BHPD, Axel spins the story and gives they BHPD all the credit. Bogomil asks and Taggart says it was all Axel. The boys are pulled from the case and new guys are put on following Axel.
Axel later loses them and crashes a country club to talk to Victor. He beats up Zack and calls Victor out for all his crimes. The BHPD arrest him again. Bogomil hears Axel’s findings about the bonds and drugs, but won’t follow up without proof. His boss, Chief Hubbard, hears this and then chews Bogomil out. Axel is to leave Beverly Hills.
Rosewood is assigned to escort him out, but Axel talks him into picking up Jenny and going to Victor’s warehouse. Axel and Jenny go in, but it is a trap. Jenny is taken away and the thugs start to beat up Axel. Rosewood breaks in and frees Axel. They follow Victor & Jenny to his house. Taggart joins them. The guys break in and start to fight off Victor’s thugs. Bogomil finds out they are in danger and rolls the BHPD to help them. Axel finally corners Victor, but Jenny is his hostage. With Bogomil’s help they kill Victor. The Chief shows up and Bogomil, having learned from Axel, spins the story so the BHPD gets the credit and takes any blame from Axel. Axel is heading back to Detroit and Taggart & Rosewood pay the hotel bill and will join him for a drink before he leaves.
Summary:
I think this was the first time I had watched Beverly Hills Cop. I looked at the cast list and had a good feeling I would like it. People felt the same way because this move spawned a trilogy. It was fun to see character actors at the starts of their careers and even some more famous ones too. The sound track is great as well.
Thanks to Karen Lindsay (a.k.a. The Scarlet Cougar) for co-hosting this triple, giving Cory a well deserved break. You can find her over on Gotham Undercover, Maid of Steel (along with John a.k.a. The Silver Vox) and Remaking History.
