Leviathan lurks in the shadows. It makes perfect sense that they would help create a shadow assassin. Power always comes with a price. Lena Luthor has led a life filled with betrayal. Her best friend at boarding school betrayed her. Her own brother and now Kara has betrayed her. I am confident there will be a price to pay for the secrets and lies.
Years ago two young girls met with similar family dynamics. They were rich girls whose families were ignoring them. The girls bonded over their loneliness and their shared love of the movie Titanic. They stayed in touch through the years. When Lex orchestrated a grand plan to kill Superman Lena calls on her friend Andrea for help.
Deep in the jungle of Costa Rica Lena and Andrea follow clues laid out in a legend. They are on the hunt for an artifact that will give them power over shadows. Andrea loses her footing and falls in a hole. Lena goes for some rope to rescue her. In her absence Andrea begins to explore. She is first upon this mysterious Medallion of Acrata.
Andrea retrieves the medallion from the rock it was set into and a man appears. He tells her that he can help her. Andrea’s father owns a tech company named Obsidian. Obsidian is struggling because it’s rival brought a superior cellphone to market. Mr. Rojas is so distressed he is threatening to take his own life. The mysterious man says he has the power to change all of this. The only catch is she must serve Leviathan when they call upon her.
Lena rescues Andrea who tells her the legend must be wrong. There is no magic medallion here. Someone else must have decoded the clues as they had. Lena will need a new plan to deal with Lex.
In present day our super friends are battling the shadow assassin. She is trying to get to Rip Roar. Will she kill him like she did the spider woman? I think not, because Andrea is the reason it was there in the first place. Leviathan was going to kill Russell for seeing too much. Andrea had to talk fast to prove that he could be an asset to the organization. He is studying Biotech. The tech Russell has developed can bring soldiers back from the brink of death.
At the DEO a battle is raging. Lena has used her inception power to gain control of Alex’s agents. I thought the DEO agents had a defense mechanism against inception. How did so many agents get infiltrated? The super friends prevail. This episode allowed us to peek through the shadows and shed some light on Lena’s past. She left Metropolis to chart a new path for herself. She wanted to get out of Lex’s shadow.
Supergirl and Alex were able to restore order at the DEO. Will Supergirl win the battle for Lena’s soul? Hope says the Medallion of Acrata was drained of power. Leviathan says it never possessed power but merely activates the darkness within a person. Now that Lena has the medallion will she be able to ravage the darkness within? Leviathan is lurking in National City. What will their next move be? Will they come seeking payment from Lena? Join Silver Vox and Green Butterfly next week for another super adventure. I have confidence that more answers will be revealed!

The more they show Leviathan backstory the more I think Justina might be right and this is our part of the crossover; them showing up all appearing entity in the cave is what cemented it for me this episode. Speak of the crossover, I wonder if the season will pick up post it? This season hasn’t been bad mind you but honestly it has been a little meh beyond some elements and I’m wondering how much is that due to the crossover; was this always the theme for the season or will we get a different season vibe once the crossover is complete?
Again I wouldn’t call this season bad or unwatchable but compared to the other seasons it just kind of is on screen if that makes sense, by that in case it doesn’t I mean the season isn’t good or bad it’s just ok compared to others. I really feel it may be down to the slow play of plots which again could be a crossover thing. Even as hard as S4 was to watch it still had action bits, as bad as S2 arguably was (in my opinion – too much Mon) it still had good character stuff for Alex, and as confusing as S3 could be at times at least there was interesting plot elements unit – season 5 has elements of each of these but for some reason it’s felt like the excitement of them isn’t the same to me; again maybe it’s pacing and the fact a lot is going through William who I could care less about so even when something is on screen I’m sadly not as invested because he’s there and I feel things could be better. For those wondering season one is still my perfection season and thus I do not need to tell you all the pluses to it and how season 5 compares. 🙂
I love Kelly is being treated as an individual and we’re seeing her beyond Alex which is an improvement from Maggie’s handling but it feels like at times Alex’s main plot so far this season is her relationship with Kelly when what I want to see also is her finally being the head of the DEO and how what she brings to it compared to J’onn or Haley.
Nia is awesome but she’s not used much. Katie is killing it again as Lena but I’m not into evil Lena so watching her stuff is more concerning they might go evil than fun because of the backstory and knowing she’s good; I get it takes drama out knowing she’s good in the end but I’m okay not having that drama because seriously we don’t need Lex-Lena show so please don’t go there! You can do angry Lena without her being maybe turned evil.
Brainy is fun but so handicapped in his abilities I’m often viewing him as a nitpick more than a fun comedy beat which he was prior. I’m beyond over the “I’m the last of my kind” only to find out there’s 100 others like you plot so J’onn’s stuff while well acted by David is just meh. Kara is saddled with William more than not and some of Andrea’s stuff is tied to him via Russell so I’m just meh with them about 50% of the time. This all really hurts my “Supergirl” fan soul to say but it seems the series didn’t beat the season 5 curse as some fans call it for series; I do take joy in this isn’t an anomaly given FLASH fans I heard weren’t really into season 5 even though I liked Nora myself and season five of ARROW was ok so it’s like the Madden curse in a way – you may not have a bad season but it won’t be your best work either ha.
We’ll see how things go post crossover but I would love to hear others thoughts on this, is it just me feeling like the show has done better with similar plots before and the slow pacing doesn’t work or are others feeling like the show is kind of off right now and if you think it’s off what is making this an ok season for you versus being hyped like in seasons’ past?
Some blog post comments…
“I thought the DEO agents had a defense mechanism against inception. How did so many agents get infiltrated?” – it’s little things like this that are annoying me this season; I know it might not seem major to the writers but these little things add up to become a big thing the more they occur.
“Now that Lena has the medallion will she be able to ravage the darkness within?” – no because she discarded it at the end after Eve told her there was nothing about it that stood out and Lena never put it on or possessed it as long as Andrea.
I want to expand on my poll choice and say Leviathan won’t pursue Lena in regards to the medal, everything else is free game!
On to the podcast…
Georgia is still not barking in the opening John, you have to work on that. 🙂
In regards to the Kara OTP poll, here’s my list…
Kara
•Sometimes yourself is your best match. She would still have romances in this choice but at the end of the day it’s herself who she’s happiest with the most beyond her family.
Lena
•I know some will scoff, but let’s be honest everyone if Lena was a dude then they’d be teasing them hard as a ship at the least because it’s the CW so I feel she’s a fair inclusion at the least!
Adam
•I know it would be awkward for the actors but character wise THEY WERE SO CUTE TOGETHER!!!
Brainy
•They’re together in various formats, comics and animations, so why not? Yes he’s dating Nia on the series but if he wasn’t you know he and Kara would be a couple of adorable dorks in love. 🙂
James
•They weren’t horrible together; you know they would have teased him as endgame so he has to be on the list.
Mon
•NO way am I voting for him but he was cannon so he has to be on the list of options.
Winn
•I only include him because some have shipped them I’ve seen.
We Haven’t Met Them Yet
•Because it’s as valid a choice as all the others!
I mean realistically we all know that after her family Kara’s big love is potstickers, but potstickers can do everything for you if you know what I mean and I’m sure at this point you do.
Are you thinking of Adam John?
Jeremiah isn’t gone it’s true but Eliza as she beautifully said in season two is not the same and they’ve changed so legally she’s still married to him maybe but emotionally she’s moved on. I feel Eliza secretly has the best game of the Danvers women and could just get basically any dude she wants but have you seen J’onn’s ears? He’s good with the kids and that body, both as Hank and J’onn…momma Danvers definitely would swoon for him I feel. I’ve been on Eliza/J’onn since “I have to know, are you a little green man on the inside?””I’m a big green man.”; think about it people, it’s pretty good. 🙂 If nothing else imagine the reactions it would get from Alex freaking out about them together because one is her mom who is too old to date probably in her mind, not to mention the whole Jeremiah thing, and the other is her boss and you know Alex will think they’re talking about her so Eliza may say something about her taking it easy and dude, Chyler would kill that humor I’m telling you! Also just again adorable together. #EarthMomSpaceDad
No flashback hair will ever be as bad as Oliver’s wig!
“Alex is back! She is the head of the DEO and she did not forget it!” “That’s because Kelly – no in this episode” – a fair comeback John.
Julie and Katie definitely carried this episode well; there we’re issues but not with their stuff.
I like a season long big bad as long as we get something on them at a decent rate; when you have the opening be so heavy on set up and then nothing until like episode 6 and then nothing again until like episode 14 and then you try to do an end season arc with information dump it doesn’t work – we saw that with Reign in season 3 and how her stuff being shafted by Mon time get that pacing. Assuming Leviathan is the season bad and not just a crossover set up then I would like to see more on them beyond their name being mentioned. It doesn’t have to be major spoilers but maybe they do simple things like show Andrea on the phone only to jump off when someone is near or Kelly learning certain files are locked because maybe she’s hiding something and we learn later it’s research on Leviathan to try and take them down because she clearly hates what she’s doing with them; instead of wasting time with William we could focus more on Leviathan watching Lena because of her mind control tech and discussing how they might use it. For me again this season so far the pacing is just too slow if Leviathan is the big bad; again props to season one because I think they did the perfect balance of season big bad to case of the week bad so I’d love to see that come back here when doing season long bad guys. Even season four as much as I know you hate the COL John did season long bad guy stuff better so far I’d argue. Dragging it out works if they’re just half a season bad but season long no; case of the week formats get a lot of flack but when done right they can be good too.
Is the pink coat older lady going to be codenamed for us Evil Mary Poppins with her pop in moments? 🙂
“It’s not a gift, it’s a curse!” – was my favorite Andrea moment because I felt it showed a real rational for her situation; usually you see people talking up the powers or saying that someone else made them do everything but Andrea admitted her wrongness and it was a great moment. Honestly the only way it could have been better was if at some point she told Lena she’s glad she took the medal because she wouldn’t want this for Lena to show she was protecting her. If we do a Lena ORP poll can Andrea be an option on it? 🙂
This is the first time we’ve seen Lena’s bio mom.
Saying things and doing them are two different things John; Lena can threaten Russell all day long and even go as far as to do what she did but it’s not killing him, had she done that then there would be a discussion of evil but she didn’t so I’d say Lena is still good. #LenaIsGood!
Lena was so Lara Croat in this. 🙂
Alex is a badass.
“Livewire”! It is my favorite episode; it is the episode in which I knew if the show even does half as good as it each week it would be a top show for the network. The character stuff in that is great! Leslie was a great villain also and set up a well done personal stake for Kara given she kind of created her; I’ll admit the Alex stuff is really what makes this episode so stand out but on the whole it’s still a wonderful episode and definitely one I’d say is a spotlight for the series. I love it so much!
I agree Leslie the whole “when I finally let Alex in” line was weirdly off and non canonical; I do not accept that scene as cannon because it’s not based on established lore.
The Lena and Andrea stuff was good don’t get me wrong, but I do agree I wish we had more with the DEO because honestly if you go by the trailer that was out it made it look like it was going to be an Alex heavy episode so if you went in like me excited for that you were disappointed; also again we’ve waited 4 years since the season one tease to see Alex as the head of the DEO and we finally get it but only for a hot second so it was a bummer to have that high excitement come in only for it to be cooled off by everything else in this episode. Again the Andrea-Lena stuff was good don’t get me wrong but again when you think your favorite character is going to be the focus of the episode especially when she’s been lightly focused on up until then your excitement goes from an 11 to like a 6; I could have taken less Russell-Andrea stuff in favor of more Danvers sisters fight moments, maybe cut out the end part where they threaten Russell and turn him into Rip Roar because we already knew that history from before – that gives us at least another 2 minutes for some DEO content with Alex leading the charge and Kara assisting. If you montage the Lena-Andrea life changes between the years it gives you even more time!
“Pants!” 🙂

Great news. Kevin Smith actually rocks.
“The more they show Leviathan backstory the more I think Justina might be right and this is our part of the crossover; them showing up all appearing entity in the cave is what cemented it for me this episode. Speak of the crossover, I wonder if the season will pick up post it? This season hasn’t been bad mind you but honestly it has been a little meh beyond some elements and I’m wondering how much is that due to the crossover; was this always the theme for the season or will we get a different season vibe once the crossover is complete?”
The way it goes for me, so far, is lead off with Derek Simon, who mangles the season setups and thems in episode 501. (Terrible episode.)
Episode 502. Pace is sloth slow and focus on Eve: turning her into Hope[less]; which is another waste of time. Allergy allegories abound.
Episode 503. Pace is slower than 502 We get to hang out with Malefic and get a story about Millenial brainwashing from both mass media and Martian perspectives. BDM turns out to be a villain of sorts. Anyone who watched this exercise in brainwiping was incepted.
Episode 504. Calvin and Hobbes. Hobbes the Tigger wins this round. Send Everyone to Calvintown!
Episode 505. How not to direct and the nail in the coffin for Staz Nair, the blockhead, who cannot do anything but roller skate in front of the camera and pollute each scene he is in. I thought Florianna Lima was terrible? He is worse.
“Again I wouldn’t call this season bad or unwatchable but compared to the other seasons it just kind of is on screen if that makes sense, by that in case it doesn’t I mean the season isn’t good or bad it’s just ok compared to others. I really feel it may be down to the slow play of plots which again could be a crossover thing. For those wondering season one is still my perfection season and thus I do not need to tell you all the pluses to it and how season 5 compares. ”
What I take is that you feel the stuff dumped out so far is incoherent and unfocused with the themes lost and no center story aside from Malefic and Richard Russell plot points which are actual distractions and ideas and not actual stories at all. Just blips to be noticed and ignored.
“I love Kelly is being treated as an individual and we’re seeing her beyond Alex which is an improvement from Maggie’s handling but it feels like at times Alex’s main plot so far this season is her relationship with Kelly when what I want to see also is her finally being the head of the DEO and how what she brings to it compared to J’onn or Haley.”
Kelly still remains an appendage and an attachment to Alex. Until she stops being the hostage and victim cards to pull some false note emotion out of the Alex character she remains a character McGuffin McMuffin and only half baked.
“Nia is awesome but she’s not used much. You can do angry Lena without her being maybe turned evil.”
Nia is slowly decaying into another appendage emotional excuse, this one for Braindead. Unless a character has an independent reason for being in the story, then the character is backgrfound scenery.
Lena (Katie McGrath’s interpretation.) is insane. She literally does not know the difference between good and evil. She is also introverted in her insanity. She thinks she wants to stop people from doing harm, but as Katie McGrath plays the part, the audience should interpret that to mean that selfish Lena deludes in that she wants people “to do no harm” … to her.
“Brainy is fun but so handicapped in his abilities I’m often viewing him as a nitpick more than a fun comedy beat which he was prior. I’m beyond over the “I’m the last of my kind” only to find out there’s 100 others like you plot so J’onn’s stuff while well acted by David is just meh. Braindead is improving in the comedy, so I am willing to pay out tolerance rope to Jesse Rath until he hangs himself with another bad performance.
David Harewood as Jerkaspidistra J’onn is playing the Jor-el part of Supergirl Vol. 6. His crimes are supposed to foreshadow Lena’s to some extent. We just cannot get there because of all the miserable writing that mangles the inception of idea.
“We’ll see how things go post crossover but I would love to hear others thoughts on this, is it just me feeling like the show has done better with similar plots before and the slow pacing doesn’t work or are others feeling like the show is kind of off right now and if you think it’s off what is making this an ok season for you versus being hyped like in seasons’ past?”
Pacing, confused writing, wasted and frankly stupid side plots, character under-development, poor direction, bad acting and boredom. I think you nailed it, Aaron.
“Some blog post comments…
“I thought the DEO agents had a defense mechanism against inception. How did so many agents get infiltrated?” – it’s little things like this that are annoying me this season; I know it might not seem major to the writers but these little things add up to become a big thing the more they occur.”
Yeah… how about that FARADAY DEFENSE, writers?
https://science.howstuffworks.com/faraday-cage.htm
“ “Now that Lena has the medallion will she be able to ravage the darkness within?” – no because she discarded it at the end after Eve told her there was nothing about it that stood out and Lena never put it on or possessed it as long as Andrea.”
… IS ALIVE. That is how Acrata is supposed to work.
“I want to expand on my poll choice and say Leviathan won’t pursue Lena in regards to the medal, everything else is free game!”
Lena has the inception button. That, and her insanity is how Leviathan turns her.
“On to the podcast…”
“Georgia is still not barking in the opening John, you have to work on that. ”
Dub it.
“In regards to the Kara OTP poll, here’s my list…
Kara:
•Sometimes yourself is your best match. She would still have romances in this choice but at the end of the day it’s herself who she’s happiest with the most beyond her family.”
Lena is the mirror for our future Red Daughter. (Team Luthor)
“Lena
•I know some will scoff, but let’s be honest everyone if Lena was a dude then they’d be teasing them hard as a ship at the least because it’s the CW so I feel she’s a fair inclusion at the least!”
Roaring rampage of revenge; object of… Melissa Benoist gets to wear the latex rubber spike costume. (Team Luthor)
“Adam:
•I know it would be awkward for the actors but character wise THEY WERE SO CUTE TOGETHER!!!”
Must be the different PoV. Blake Jenner registered as a smug prick through the camera. I disliked his performance INTENSELY. He makes a perfect typecast thug.
“Brainy:
•They’re together in various formats, comics and animations, so why not? Yes he’s dating Nia on the series but if he wasn’t you know he and Kara would be a couple of adorable dorks in love. ”
Jesse Rath lacks the “q” to pull it off. YMMV.
“James:
•They weren’t horrible together; you know they would have teased him as endgame so he has to be on the list.”
Why? The hack writers ruined Mehcad’s career for five years. Let him move on to a project where he can actually be a character instead of a McGuffin McMuffin.
“Mon:
•NO way am I voting for him but he was cannon so he has to be on the list of options.”
Same as Mehcad.
“Winn:
•I only include him because some have shipped them I’ve seen.”
Depends. It would be from the Disney Kim Possible Ron Stoppable playbook, but I’m not seeing it.
“We Haven’t Met Them Yet:
•Because it’s as valid a choice as all the others!”
You could try Buzz from Supergirl Vol. 4.
https://dc.fandom.com/wiki/Gaius_Marcus_(New_Earth)
He was sent from DC Hell to corrupt the Earth Angel and steal her soul. Peter Allen David wrote out a seventy issue battle between Supergirl and this creep. In the end… Supergirl redeems him and kills the devil. Guess what I think William Dey is?
“I mean realistically we all know that after her family Kara’s big love is potstickers, but potstickers can do everything for you if you know what I mean and I’m sure at this point you do.”
We won’t go there.
“Are you thinking of Adam, John?”
Blake Jenner. See my comments above.

If you want BDMMBL (Badmumble) then I want KARLEN (aka Team Luthor)
“No flashback hair will ever be as bad as Oliver’s wig!”
Have you seen Patrick Stewart in “I, Claudius”?
““Alex is back! She is the head of the DEO and she did not forget it!” “That’s because Kelly – no(t) in this episode” – a fair comeback John.”
See what I mean about a McGuffin McMuffin? If a character is not missed; James, Kelly, William, Malefic, Braindead, Nia, etc., then the character has no independent purpose and or is underwritten to story and plot. The only reason Andrea/Acrata made it to first team status for season 5 is that Julie Gonzalo, the actress, has a character purpose independent unto herself established in this episode. It is a mark of hideously awful writing and direction before 506 that it took this long to 3-d her as Acrata. Speaking of which…
“Julie and Katie definitely carried this episode well; there we’re issues but not with their stuff.

Kind of lost me there in the middle, Aaron, but I get it. Unfocused and rambling is what you think Season 3 was. I would think MacBeth and King Lear is a kind of Mishmash myself, but I LOVED Odette Annabelle as Reign. But of course with the Derek Simon led crew of clumsy calligraphers, we got a lot of garbage before we got to her.
Disjointed and in halves was season 4 with the Agent Liberty story on one side and the Mark Miller Red Son storyline inspired Lex Luthor driven Distaff Kasnian Kara on the other. I hated it with a passion. It almost made me quit the show.
“Is the pink coat older lady going to be codenamed for us Evil Mary Poppins with her pop in moments? ”
MADAM SHAZAM.

She is as far from Mary Poppins as one can get.
“ “It’s not a gift, it’s a curse!” – was my favorite Andrea moment because I felt it showed a real rational for her situation; usually you see people talking up the powers or saying that someone else made them do everything but Andrea admitted her wrongness and it was a great moment. Already done. That is the whole reason for episode 506. (Spoiler) As soon as Acrata dies… (Team Luthor)
“This is the first time we’ve seen Lena’s bio mom.”
As long as she is seen and not heard.
“Saying things and doing them are two different things John; Lena can threaten Russell all day long and even go as far as to do what she did but it’s not killing him, had she done that then there would be a discussion of evil but she didn’t so I’d say Lena is still good. #LenaIsGood!

Lena is insane. And… Wait for it. (Team Luthor).
“Alex is a badass.”

Never made much of an impression on me. Now Reign…
“I agree Leslie the whole “when I finally let Alex in” line was weirdly off and non canonical; I do not accept that scene as cannon because it’s not based on established lore.”
Agreed; that was off series bible and continuity.
“The Lena and Andrea stuff was good don’t get me wrong, but I do agree I wish we had more with the DEO because honestly if you go by the trailer that was out it made it look like it was going to be an Alex heavy episode so if you went in like me excited for that you were disappointed; also again we’ve waited 4 years since the season one tease to see Alex as the head of the DEO and we finally get it but only for a hot second so it was a bummer to have that high excitement come in only for it to be cooled off by everything else in this episode. If you montage the Lena-Andrea life changes between the years it gives you even more time!”
Cannot agree. We needed Acrata developed. Use another episode with BDM and Malefic, show why THEY BOTH SUCK, now and make that a MARTIAN CHRONICLES tug of war with Alex in the middle.

BDM, alias J’onn J’onnz, is my Monty Magnificent Magazine Munificence this week with the Steve Orlando series being his new origin story.

You can find it at the link. J’onn is not a very good Martian Manhunter in this one.
Later, Ladies and Gonzorific spiked Stegasaurian Kryptonian peoples!
