Sometimes a decision is not completely wrong or completely right. What if laws are broken while trying to get justice for others? What if you commit a cardinal sin to relieve suffering? What if you tell a lie to spare a loved one’s feelings? One lie becomes two and before you know it the lines are blurred.
Lena has very good intentions. She wants to manipulate the human brain to express all of our best traits. She wants a race filled with hope, empathy, and love. Lena claims she doesn’t want to control people. She is not looking to produce a City full of Zombies all bent to her will. How does Lena hope to accomplish this goal? She is seeking to take advantage of Kara’s super powers. A friend that is feeling guilty for hurting you is easy to take advantage of. Lena needs Lex’s help. His journals are at Fort Summit filled with information she needs to reach her goal. Surely retrieving them will not be hard for the Girl of Steel.
Dr. Niles Jarrod was found dead in a Nightclub. This seems like it should be a top story. Andrea feels his death doesn’t have enough sparkle and is not likely to get enough clicks so move on. Luckily James has a contact at the Medical Examiner’s office. The deceased has a spider tattoo on his heart. How did that even happen? This definitely seems like a job for a Pulitzer Prize winning Investigative Reporter.
Alex stops by for some much needed sister bonding and recognizes something on Kara‘s laptop. The woman wearing them is a stranger but the tattoos are familiar. Director Danvers has seen them on an alien prisoner that escaped when Lex invaded the desert facility. Maybe this is a DEO case after all. Even allegedly dead Lex is still playing a role in this story. Kara and Alex head to National City Hospital to save the next would be victim. After an epic battle the girl with the spider tattoo is taken out by an unknown assailant. She is struck dead before we can get any answers. Who does she work for? Why is she attacking doctors?
J’onn enlists the help of Nia. He thinks maybe repairing his memories with her dream might be the safest approach. In the dreamscape we see Malefic as a small boy unable to enter the Martian collective consciousness. His powers are different. Malefic has the power to influence minds and bend them to his will. This power was a threat to his community so he was sent to exile. When Malefic sided with the White Martians against his own people drastic measures had to be taken. M’rynn, was already so aggrieved by what had transpired with his younger son that J’onn felt he had to take action. M’rynn was a spiritual leader of his people. How could he lead after failing Malefic? In this moment J’onn must commit the most monumental sin of his people. He banished his brother to the Phantom Zone, stripped him of his power and wiped him from the minds of all Martians.
Malefic is plotting to get his power restored. Under the guise of Kelly’s friend Pete, he visits Obsidian North. He reports that he is having many symptoms of PTSD. Kelly immediately begins the Q wave treatment. In just moments the process achieved the desired effect. Malefic is immediately using his inception to control Kelly. He is trying to manipulate her into injuring herself. J’onn bursts in and tries to reason with Malefic. Instead Malefic makes a run for it. As a side effect of the Q waves Kelly now has the power to see Malefic regardless of what form he shifts into. This could spell trouble. James takes Kelly out of town to keep her safe. Kara grabbed a portal watch at Fort Summit that she gives to James just in case of emergency.
Supergirl delivers the journals she took from the Fort to Lena. Within the pages she finds Lex’s plans to use Q waves to achieve mind control. Soon will all the citizens of National City be under mental manipulation? William meets an unknown man who gives him a stack of money. The identity of the man is a mystery. The reason for the payout also unknown. So many questions and so many blurred lines. This is your eye in the sky Green Butterfly. Please join us next week for another super adventure!

Cougar’s Comic Corner
Countdown to Infinite Crisis #1
Everything you knew about the DC Universe changes and it all begins right here with a prelude issue to the DCU mega-event INFINITE CRISIS! Superstar writers Geoff Johns, Greg Rucka and Judd Winick team with a bevy of artists for a story that alters the very face of the DC Universe for years to come!
A fair point was made about Kara and the journals, they should have showed us her trying to get them via asking Alex to use her DEO connections before we saw her taking them because her just taking them goes against Kara’s ideas of justice and kind of makes her a hypocrite. Yes visual it was always going to end up with her taking them in the Super suit but character wise that shouldn’t be her first move. I don’t know if it’s just me or what but it feels like this season has held back on Alex and the DEO side because in this she should have been shown hunting spider woman more but instead we got James with Kara; I know it’s his last few episodes but that doesn’t mean you have to write weird pair ups, I know they’re use to forcing him in places but still!
“This definitely seems like a job for a Pulitzer Prize winning investigative reporter.” – Nia is busy so I guess Kara will have to take her place this trip. 🙂
“Will Kelly Retain Her Martian Mind Power?” – yes, for as long as the plot needs it anyways…after that however I hope not; I thought they learned from the Guardian and Super James failures that we don’t want an Olsen with powers certainly and not everyone needs them in the first place! Kelly is skilled without so I hope they don’t use this to say now she’s better at her job or now she sees she can’t trust everyone! Alex called her naive but just because you’re peppy doesn’t mean you’re naive – see season one Kara.
On to the podcast…
I have to say at first I wasn’t sure if the theme song was kicking in or if someone was turning on an original PS4, ha; still getting use to the change but it works for you two. 🙂
It may just be me, but it would be adorable if K Vox barked each time John said her name in the intro; I keep waiting for it to happen…maybe one day. 🙂
You say villanelle in terms of poetry, but I hear “Killing Eve”. Ha.
Ha to John’s “Mumble, mumble, mumble CW!”.
Clark had to kill Zod in “Man Of Steel” John because he said he wasn’t going to stop, it was him or humans. Okay yes maybe Clark could have flown him up and away from that particular family but what happens when he breaks free from the hold and goes after another? I get wanting supers to be good but they shouldn’t be naive if you will; that’s part of what annoys me about Kara post season one at times and why I hate Clark’s influence on her – Kara believes in doing good as much as she can but she was never naive about situations in S1 when it came to an A or B situation. Again yes she would try everything she could not to get there but when she did she would pick as much as it sucks. Maybe it’s because most of my favorite comic characters fall into the anti hero category but I’m okay with there being moments of a “kill X to stop them” choices; again do what you can to avoid that if that’s your beliefs but if they leave you basically that one choice I’m okay with Kara doing what Clark often can’t, she’s not her cousin after all. That all said yeah the first choice being to steal because she feels guilty is again out of character for Kara as we’ve seen her to now! I can see her getting to that point but being her first move no.
Umm, it depends on the situation as I can see Alex asking Kara to help with some shady stuff especially if it involves helping Jeremiah! My baby Alex is an anti hero like that (the show stops short of calling her that but I will because she is and that’s okay – embrace the anti heroes Arrowverse as it’s not a dirty word!). 🙂 On the whole though I agree she wouldn’t put Kara in that position unless it was absolutely necessary in her mind; Lena is just doing it currently to hurt Kara back.
I wonder if some of this James stuff, maybe all of it, is just shoved into episodes to give Mechad something to do before he leaves…as if the writers think this content will make us miss him when he’s gone. Sorry to say if this is the plan writers but we’ve been missing James since the end of season one! If James’s plots weren’t so ridiculous, seriously Senator Olsen…again that’s more hilarious than reporter Kara Danvers, then maybe we would miss him…maybe we wouldn’t look for him to leave in the first place but because they are he just feels like filler and forced again into places just to give him something to do and it sucks.
Oh Leslie you list Alex’s wrap sheet like it’s a bad thing and I know it’s suppose to be but all I can think is “My anti hero baby!” :). The anti hero aspect of Alex is one of the things to me that makes her my favorite because she’s not just the “good guy” like others and she’s not a villain like some – she’s in between and that’s interesting to me. Again anti hero/anti villain is NOT a dirty word writers!!! Also never forget Alex snatching Max out of his office and feed him a face full of desk when he threatened Kara; classic scene. 🙂 A byproduct of that was good Jimmy, he questioned the DEO’s handling of Max and while I didn’t necessarily agree with him given what we knew at the time I did feel his case was far and that plot could have been so interesting to explore…sadly instead we got Guardian. 🙁
To be fair about the FBI thing, that’s the DEO’s cover outside in the world so I’d say Alex just pressed the kid like she would if she could say they’re DEO. Is it still wrong? Maybe, but it’s no different than a cop using the title to scare someone when they’re being bully to another.
@ Aaron and Leslie:
Interesting discussion about the characters and plot developments and suggested fixes and future story avenues.
What I want to address is “why” the characters jump all over the place and why the stories and characters never seem to make sense in the continuity meaning of the term for this series.
In the old days, a good TV series would have a line production executive assistant (assistant to the producer) who would keep character “bibles” and series continuity histories so that the viewer every week could expect Wojohoewitz on Barney Miller to be a meathead and a cop who goes beyond the call of duty. Or little Leavitt would be the actual guy who holds the 12th together, or wiseacre Dietrich would be the ARROGANT know it all, who really knew it all; and so forth. Stories were built on the consistent characters and the stories had recurrent plot themes that did not deviate from what could be expected from the ensemble casts’ expected character bible behaviors.
Does the audience or can the audience expect Alex, Jimmy, Kara, BDM or even Lena to be consistent? Nope. No Gunsmoke here with James Arness ridding that same Godfrey Daniels spotted Palomino in over 20 years of episodes. (He rode 5 of them in the episodes, sometimes 2 different horses in the same episode, but the horses were continuity checked against each other to make sure the “characters” matched on screen what was expected from the stupid horse by the audience.)
Anyway, guess who is NOT doing that work on Supergirl?
In the beginning was the Turd, and his name was Derek Simon. Who hired him? Guess… it was not Greg Berlanti.
Who do we know who likes message over story and flavor of the week over consistency and who is not a very successful show runner by the usual metrics? Not Andrew Kreisberg who was fired off this show.
ANYWAY, AA, does not just stand for “art assassinated” on this show.
Monty.
I did not mean for my list of Alex’s having crossed the line to be a bad thing. Alex is one of my favorite characters on Supergirl after Kara.
It was just that Alex had no credibility to convince Kara not to break into the army base. I would have preferred a savvy Alex being skeptical of Lena’s request and for Alex to be suspicious of Lena’s motives. Instead what we saw was both Kara and Alex assuming Lena is okay. Kara should know better, too and to not have told Lena that there are no boundaries. Kara knows full well that there are boundaries which Kara pointed out to Alex in Exodus when Alex beat up that DEO prisoner. I just wanted a better approach (better writing?) on Supergirl doing something unnecessarily illegal for a friend. Maybe it would have been better for me if I saw a lightbulb go on for Alex that perhaps Lena hasn’t forgiven Kara. Alex is usually more savvy and suspicious than she’s been portrayed in the first 3 episodes regarding Lena. In fact, what is Alex going to do when she finds out Lena has been playing Kara? In keeping with Alex’s usual character, she should be very angry.
“It was just that Alex had no credibility to convince Kara not to break into the army base.” – oh yeah no, she’s like WAY down on the list of credibility for legal actions. Maxwell Lord may have more credibility than her, ha.
Kara is feeling the guilt though as John and Justina said so she’s blinded by that arguably; maybe later in we’ll see her saying no but for now she’s blinded by guilt so she’s willing to do anything to be in Lena’s good graces again.
“In fact, what is Alex going to do when she finds out Lena has been playing Kara? In keeping with Alex’s usual character, she should be very angry.” – I agree Leslie, she should go ballistic saying she knew this would happen because Lena is a Luthor and they’re all bad or something along those lines given her personal experience with them and just her general protectiveness of Kara and her response to those who hurt her, but what will she do? We’ll see. Is it just me or has Alex felt just here to you also? By that I mean yes we’ve seen moments with Alex this season so far but it hasn’t felt like she’s really done anything to me; this is her first real year as DEO head with no one looking over her shoulder if you will but we haven’t seen that, instead of her and Kara chasing down the bug lady it’s Kara and Jimmy. Kara’s busy with making up to Lena so we don’t get a lot of sister time currently and Kelly is the focus of the tech stuff (yay for her being treated as an individual) so Alex is kind of just the love interest if you will for those moments instead of us hearing more about why she likes Kelly beyond she’s just a good listener. Maybe it’s because there’s so many characters currently and they’re trying to hype up James before he leaves and J’onn’s brother is a focus because of the crossover but it feels like Alex hasn’t really had anything to do yet. It says a lot about Chyler’s work that we’re still so hyped each week for Alex this season but yeah maybe after the crossover we’ll see her getting more involved in plots like she has been previously because right now again at times it feels like she’s just kind of there or has very little content for the episode of the week.
I think Alex and Kara couldn’t get together and have quality sister time because of Kelly. I was wondering whether Kelly had to leave so that Kara and Alex could team up.
I wish some time were paid to Alex discussing Red Daughter, Supergirl’s new suit or the failed adoption with Kara.
It should have been Alex who helped Supergirl not James. James got in the way and then he had to be saved by Supergirl.
Alex has been talking to Kara a lot, but only about Lena. I agree that Alex will go “ballistic,” when she realizes what Lena has been doing. It should be an even more heated argument than Alex had with Jeremiah in the woods in Season 2 episode Homecoming.
Sadly I don’t think we’ll ever see the sisters talk about this failed adoption; I can see them saving a sisters’ talk for a failed one because of Alex’s sexual orientation just to cement Supergirl doesn’t stand for bullying and that’s not just cause to keep a child from being adopted by someone. Then again we might only see aunt Kara by the time it happens and she never shares on screen about failed attempts. 🙁 I can also see it being addressed by Kara making a comment that says they talked off screen which would be a bummer as as we say they are the heart of the show and we want to see all their stuff and especially their stuff together!
“It should have been Alex who helped Supergirl not James. James got in the way and then he had to be saved by Supergirl.” – AGREED! The insect escaped from the desert base as DEO head its her job to go bring them back in not his! Yes, Guardian’s ability to make situations worse or not help really at all is just another reason I don’t care for him. Again why they never let James just stay in his CatCo lane I’ll never know!
I figure Alex will straight up lay hands on Lena if she can when she finds out because she is ultra protective of Kara and she doesn’t trust that family anyways. It’s just a mess with Lena. I’m just hoping they keep her a good guy/anti hero like she is at the end of the day because if they make her just another Luthor like her brother and mother the show will have MAJOR cliché baggage and I personally don’t want to see that; I’m here for “Supergirl” featuring Kara and Alex not anther Superman project.
