What do you know about the people you spend your day with? Do you know what would make them exclaim “This Is the best day ever!”? All these little facts about you are the building blocks that construct the person that you are. What if someone tried to manipulate those core elements of your personality? What if you were erased? Now you are a blank slate. You are as pure as the moment you were born, but now you are at the mercy of the person punching the keys. It is them that will dictate how you act now. They dictate what will happen next.
Lena has the best of intentions. She wants to build a do no harm protocol. That sounds really great. People would no longer cause chaos or destruction to themselves or their community. It would certainly make the jobs of the Police, the Military and Superheroes easier. What about free will? Lena thinks she can solve the City’s problems by wiping the slate clean. She has used some of Andrea’s Obsidian North technology to accomplish this goal. I fear that someone else will manipulate Lena’s invention to mind control the citizens of National City.
On the way to work Kara and Alex stop by J’onn’s to bring him coffee. They find him crumpled on the floor in terrible pain. He tells them that he was confronted by a brother he doesn’t even remember. The unknown Martian must be telling the truth because J’onn’s symptoms are consistent with a curse. The curse a Martian must suffer if they raise a hand against their brother.
Long ago there was a Martian Civil War. The council banished J’onn’s brother Malefic to the Phantom Zone. His crime was helping the White Martians fight against his own people. J’onn’s memory was modified leaving no recollection of having a brother. The search is on for two Martians loose in the City.
As a result of the curse both J’onn and Malefic are crippled with pain. Kelly’s Q wave treatment cured both brothers or their ailment. This leaves Malefic and his White Martian minion free to cause mayhem.
Kara is having a tough day at work. Andrea Rojas wants to knock her Pulitzer Prize winning reporter down a few pegs. She assigns her a fashion story despite Kara having the lead on a Senate candidate. It is definitely hard to be a Superhero with a new boss giving you many deadlines to keep. Ms. Rojas doesn’t know about the Martians in the sewer.
Lena is confronted by Andrea about purposely dismantling her technology. Ms. Rojas repossesses the contact lenses. What she doesn’t understand is that she is too late. Lena has already learned what she needed from the Obsidian North technology. Lena also had some help. Eve pledged her loyalty to Lena. Ms. Luthor is very wary of human friendships and wants to rely on technology alone. I don’t believe Eve understands the price she will pay to stand by Lena’s side. Lena seeks to use Eve as a host for her virtual assistant Hope. What will this do to Eve’s mind? Will there be anything left of Ms. Tessmacher when Hope has achieved her mission? What is Malefic’s next move? We will just have to tune in next time and find out. Until then this is your eye in the sky Green Butterfly wishing you all a super week.

Cougar’s Comic Corner
Collects the 1998 MARTIAN MANHUNTER series issues #0-9.
The Martian Manhunter, one of the key heroes in The New 52, stars in this new title collecting his popular 1998 series. Featuring moody art by writer John Ostrander’s frequent collaborator, Tom Mandrake, the story begins as the Manhunter tells Superman about the end of Mars’s civilization and how he came to Earth. In his guise as Detective John Jones, he tracks a serial killer and investigates a mystery at Cadmus Laboratories, then saves the entire Justice League from the threat of Malefic.
I have to say I am enjoying Rojas the more I see her in this season, I hate her actions at times but I love watching her in scenes with Kara and Lena and hopefully we’ll get her and Kelly having conversations this season too; Julia Gonzalo is killing it with this character! She’s definitely a great mental challenge for the group if not emotional also depending on how the season goes; no all bad guys have to bring the physical might. She’s definitely been a highlight so far for me!
Small correction: I meant it more as maybe Obsidian knows full well about Leviathan and is willingly helping them via all of this tech, they’re like the public face of the group if you will but also come with a separate name to potentially throw off people looking into a connection – think shell companies and how at the end of the chain it’s one person behind it but publicly it seems like various unconnected groups. Rojas might be a full member of Leviathan and thus they aren’t tools in the sense they’re being used by them for the long term gain – they knew full well what’s going on and are actively helping so ok they’re a tool to that degree but not in the sense I took it. If that makes sense; them not knowing and being a tool in that concept of the word could be interesting and create some interesting team ups to revisit in later seasons but I just currently lean towards Rojas could know more than she says and is actively involved…if they’re building this threat all season long why not show one face of the group (Rojas) while distracting Kara and company with another (the bus stop lady) to keep them off their game before revealing at the end they’re like a Hydra and both part of the same fight.
Why isn’t Central City active if I might ask? Also how do shows get on the network? I’m asking because I’m kind of surprised no one has started a “Black Lightening” or “Batwoman” podcast given the talk of BL being a really talked up series and “Batwoman” being the new kid on the block; I can actually see feeling her out still as it’s season one but I’m surprise no one has done a Black Lightening podcast yet even if it’s just a end of season review. Is it because he’s not a part of the universe yet officially or just because all the hosts are busy with other series so you don’t want to get overloaded? I enjoyed last year’s round table for the crossover event so I hope that’s being discussed for this year again also with a FLASH representative and the Arrow Squad hosts coming in too to be the ARROW rep with Cammie and Martin doing the LEGENDS side of things as I know he’s into that series also; I’m just curious to the behind the scenes stuff. 🙂
“Batwoman”‘s pilot was rough in my opinion but episode two was much better mainly because of the sister content! I’m really enjoying Rachel Skarsten as Alice, she does well in the DCU (she was Dinah on “Birds Of Prey” which aired on the WB back in the day), and Kate’s step sister Mary…they’re probably my favorites so far. I am SO ready for Kate to get her Elseworlds suit because this current batsuit is just horrible on her, but that’s the point given it’s Bruce’s and not hers – still I need it to go and we get the Elseworlds suit. It’s kind of a slow go I’d say but you can see good elements there!
10 seasons of “Supergirl”; if they do a spin off it’s Alex based! 🙂
Brainy and Nia are so freaking adorable I’m surprised we don’t all have cavities by now watching them, so sweet! I do REALLY appreciate we’re getting moments with Alex and Kelly where they’re learning about each other still and they don’t instantly know everything about each other so it feels real, but while I like Kelly the individual I’m not yet fully sold on Alex/Kelly as endgame; I’ll fully admit it may have something to do with me being hung up on wanting to see what Sam/Alex would have been like but I’m still feeling out how I feel about Danolsen as I’ve seen them called. Maybe because they started them as friends I’m still seeing more the friends side of them, they’re friends with benefits now clearly at least, but I’m not 100% into them yet like I am Brainy/Nia who they did jump into with crush first so they kind of jumped off faster you could say and we’ve had a full season of them as flirting where as Kelly and Alex didn’t really make a move on each other until the last episode so we need this build up season with them I think for them to feel fully fleshed out. Again I LOVE the way they’re doing it with them learning about each other and Kelly being more than just the love interest so they’re doing things right we just have to see how believable they are when they don’t agree and if we buy their post couple moments as organic resolution or forced to keep the ship going…same with Brainy and Nia as we haven’t seen them really disagree on anything major yet either. On the whole I’m loving the handling for the pairs but romance wise I do lean more Brainy/Nia currently because we’re at the romance point with them where as Alex and Kelly are still in the testing it out phase if you will.
Ugh just hearing the clip, I love rational Kelly so much – things like this make her my favorite Olsen! To be fair to James I remember season one when he was rational…good times for watching the James character. It’s probably not completely ethical given her personal relationships now but I would love to see Kelly give this group therapy because we know they could use it; it would take five years for Alex and Lena alone given their issues with Jeremiah and Lex and Lillian but if Kelly just works in comments to help them I’d be fine with that too. 🙂 I do wonder if she maybe does that unintentionally at times, side effect of the job, or if that’s just Kelly – a really good listener who separates work advice time and off the clock advice time? I’ve enjoyed her addition also so far this season.
The slow play of Alex/Kelly is refreshing.
NO MAKING Lena EVIL!!! I’m fine with questionable choices Lena, but NO EVIL Lena! You’re being watched writers just know that.
That version of “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” will never not be creepy now given the scenes they used it in because I’m pretty sure Eve is not having fun. Ha.
Still not caring about Day. Him using the phone to track Kara was great though!
I’m with John, I think Lena turned Eve out of vengeance to a degree.
“This is just RIDICULOUS!” – John laughing at “Senator Olsen” is me! 🙂
I don’t think Kelly knows Kara is Supergirl, unless they did it off screen (which boo) then even Azie said Kelly doesn’t know so she didn’t lie to Lena when Katie said everyone lied to Lena during press this season.
Again Kara should have just worked in the marketing department! 🙂
William and Kara as a romance? Pass! Was that what they were trying to do with that end scene, have us care for him? They make as much sense as Senator James Olsen so again no thank you to that plot.
Awe Astra. 🙁 Miss you Laura as the twins!
Great podcast! I look forward to the podcast each week.
Thanks for making Maid of Steel available on Spotify. Now I can listen to all of my podcasts on Spotify, which is very convenient for me.
I too worry about the casts of 1000s on Supergirl all vying for screen time, but I think thus far the show has focused on Supergirl or at least storylines that interest me.
I did notice that Lena was isolated again, very much like in the 3rd Season of Supergirl when Lena was trying to cure Sam. It’s never good to isolate oneself and to engage in a lot of stinkin’ thinkin’. Think long and wrong is another saying that comes to mind.
I also like Supergirl to be successful against these challenges. I read that the show was going to return to Season 1’s monster of the week for Supergirl to defeat. I like that format which was missing in Season 3 where weeks would go by without Supergirl being truly successful.
I also don’t like it when others have to help her dispense with a threat or when foes who have no previous fight training get the better of her. She’s supposed to be the most powerful being on Earth. She’s stronger than Superman.
“…or when foes who have no previous fight training get the better of her.” – this to me Leslie is more irritating than the team helping her at times because it makes no sense; I can appreciate the team helping her in support roles such as Alex and J’onn fighting off minions while she fights the boss or if a villain of the week is particularly tough but they need to show that because as you say a SOLID 8 out of 10 times at least Kara should be able to take out the boss without help and debatably it should be 9 out of 10 times.
Fight wise I think Wonder Woman could take Kara as she can take Clark because they’re more brawlers than tacticians but yeah Kara can beat Clark so she should be taking more down than she does. I feel they do it to make characters feel important because without being fight support we could narrow down the team by a lot; Alex is Kara’s most trusted back up so she’d stay, J’onn is backup for tough minions, and Nia does provide a tactical advantage with her dreams but beyond that you could almost fill Briany’s spot with anyone at the DEO (bring back Vasquez) and what building he provides can be done by Lena and James as Guardian…well no one takes that serious, okay so we’d lose two and be partial on one but still it would be a change if they made it more like season one so again I think they kind of hold her back at times to give others more of a reason to be around.
I also think her working with a team fits because Kara since season one has operated under the idea of “stronger together” unlike Clark who’s known for going it alone so while I would be fine with seeing her take on more bosses herself I think it’s still within her continuity to work with the group each week.
Her getting beat just to make fights go longer however is not accurate! If someone has a way to suppress her, such as Livewire (SHE’S NOT DEAD – NO BODY NO DEATH!), then I get drawing them out all episode but if it’s someone like a white Martian she’s shown she can do that with little to no help…at most she’d need one person as backup. Season one to me is still the best season of the series, if Alex was out then it would be basically perfect, so if they’re looking at pulling from it again that’s great; it’s just a shame they didn’t pull from that for James instead of doing Guardian for so long.
Even with its issues at times “Supergirl” is still easily my favorite of the CW DC universe shows and I hope we get to enjoy it for many years to come (10 seasons)!
I’d love for Supergirl to be around for 10 or more seasons. It’s my favorite TV show. I just worry because there have been rumblings that both Supergirl’s and Batwoman’s viewership numbers are down.
Apparently, a new Supergirl movie is in the works which I don’t understand.
I didn’t like the change in Supergirl’s time slot. But in any event, both shows are competing with Sunday night football. Supergirl should be the lead into Batwoman, not the other way around.
It also didn’t help that the Supergirl segment of last year’s crossover was the weakest, had little to do with Supergirl, and its ending scene was not with Alex and Kara, but with Barry and Oliver. Supergirl didn’t even do her own opening sequence for her own show.
I hope Supergirl isn’t shunted aside again in this year’s crossover with all of these characters and 3 people playing Superman.
I also hope Livewire isn’t dead. She’s my favorite because she pokes fun at Supergirl in a very humorous way. Maybe Livewire will be resurrected for the 100th episode which hopefully will be House of L or Red Dawn epic!
“Supergirl should be the lead into Batwoman, not the other way around.” – given “Batwoman” is suppose to be the “darker” show I am surprised it isn’t on in the 8pm slot but maybe this is a first season thing and they know people will watch “Supergirl” so why not try to catch early tune in eyes? As for competing with football I feel the CW has to take this in to account and not hold it against the shows given they knew last year “Supergirl” would be competing with it and still had faith in the show so I think they don’t really hold drops against them on that night; it’s like shows competing with “Grey’s Anatomy” on Thursdays, you know at best you’re trying for second place because you’re not topping Grey’s. I don’t really look into ratings much but just by context wise even at its worst “Supergirl” is still on par with others okay episode so I definitely think they deserve AT LEAST as many seasons as Flash and Arrow plus one or two because they are consistently good; yes season to season of the series it can be a drop but comparing a bad episode of “Supergirl” to the other series on a normal basis I’d say “Supergirl” holds with them if not beats them so I’m not worry over it any time soon.
I haven’t checked recently but last I heard “Supergirl” was still in the top 3 shows for the network so I’d say they’re good for at least as long as the Flash and Arrow went…at least they should be as again quality to quality Kara holds up to the boys if not beats them. I don’t know if it’ll go 10 more seasons, I’d be fine if it did, but I hope it goes 10 seasons on the whole or again at the least as long as “Arrow” plus one because she’s that good. As you said it’s easily my favorite series on the network and one of my most look forward to shows each week!
Elseworlds was not a good crossover, clearly it was just about Barry and Oliver in regards to Crisis and setting up “Batwoman” because yeah it was more Superman for some odd reason than Supergirl connected; she was a big factor in Earth X though which is the best crossover still to me. She also was a highlight of the first mega crossover featuring the dominators so there’s that. Personally Crisis hasn’t gotten me excited for it beyond the announcement of the Huntress Easter egg; I feel it will be a repeat of Elseworlds where there’s too many characters for anyone besides Oliver to get screentime, it’ll be mainly about Oliver since “Arrow” is ending, and in the end they’ll merge Earths and I am just not excited about the possibility of having Barry effect National City because I’m still waiting for him to fix his screw of turning baby Sara into John Jr. so I don’t have a lot of faith in him being closer to us story wise. It may surprise me but yeah I’m not holding my breath for Crisis; I feel at the end I’ll still be saying Earth X is the best crossover of the CW DCU universe so far.
Leslie is awesome! I definitely love how she calls out members such as the boys being a joke in season two trying to stop her or her saying the girls needed to focus up on Fort Rozz because Reign was no joke. 🙂 Again no body no death; my head cannon is Leslie jumped into the fort’s system to heal and before it exploded into the blue star she jumped into another vessel and she’s currently living a life in the future until she’s ready to come back and harass Kara some more. 🙂 When she returns they have to have Caitlin Parrish also return to write her because Caitlin and Leslie together is like Danvers sisters together levels of good! 🙂
