Reign has come to National City. This World Killer from Krypton seeks justice and vengeance. Supergirl must step up to stop her. But Kara is distracted with Mon-El and Imra. Menwhile Lena and Jimmy grow closer and go after Morgan Edge.
Reign:
Samatha awakes in her own bed confused and tired. She does not remember her road trip or what she discovered. Ruby keeps her grounded. She is extremely busy at work and tired. It seems like her personality is split. She is the loving mother and sharp leader at L-Corp during the day, but at night she is Reign. She is burning her symbol and marking her territory. She is taking out criminals and gangs. The things that Samatha detests, Reign eliminates. Ruby just wants time with her mom and Samantha gives it. They celebrate Christmas Eve and Sam gives Ruby a Supergirl necklace. But we are left wondering how long it will take before Reign overtakes Sam.
Supergirl calls her out and Reign answers. They begin to fight and interrupt an office Christmas party and the shoppers on the street. They go toe to toe, but Reign has the upper hand since Kara wants to protect people. Reign throws a beaten and bloody Supergirl off the roof. We leave Kara unconscious and injured at street level. Ruby awakes Christmas morning to a big surprise. Mom’s not home but Reign is!
Will Love Reign For Lena and Jimmy:
Lena and Jimmy are eyeing each other across the room at Kara’s Christmas party and everyone is encouraging them to go for it. Lena has some hang ups about it, since she is his boss. When the symbols start appearing across the city, they both assume it is Morgan Edge’s doing. They confront him, but he knows nothing about it. They still don’t trust him. Following up on leads gets them into gang territory. They are attacked but James, She can call me Jimmy, Olsen stealth-fully saves her. It seems Guardian has become her bodyguard. They share a drink, a small kiss and then a big one back at Catco. But their first date is interrupted by the Supergirl Reign fight.
Reign of Distraction for Kara:
Kara is struggling. Mon-El (Chris Wood) and wife Imra (Amy Jackson) are perfect together and it is ripping Kara’s heart out. Both Mon-El and Imra try to talk with Kara one on one, but it does not help. Kara says they are three people stuck in a crappy situation and only 2 people will be happy. Looking to escape relationship issues, she throws herself into learning about this Kryptonian. The Kryptoina database (with her mother as the interface) is no help. Cult leader, Thomas Coville, calls her and tells her about the old gods and the lore of the god killer. The Kryptonian devil who would Reign unless stopped. He says that is Kara’s purpose. Kara decides to call out Reign and Alex tells her not to be human. But be an alien to fight Reign. The relationship drama, Kryptonian lore and fear of people being hurt all distract Kara and lead to her fall.
Closing Thoughts:
Reign was the victor this week. Kara is in a coma, Samantha’s personality has been overpowered, and our heroes are left wondering what is next. I enjoyed the episode, but to me Reign sees less of a threat than Kara’s Earth-X self. It is hard to see her getting beaten by Reign after the events of the crossover. But I have to put the crossover aside and forget it and sink into this story line. It was good because it set things up for the rest of the season and did it in cool ways. It will be interesting to see how Kara and Lena react, when they find out who Reign is in reality. Can Kara really get out of the relationship funk long enough to let the Legion help her defeat Reign? We will see come January.

Happy 50th episode! Here’s to another 950 episodes at least! 🙂
The casting of the young Danvers sisters was perfect! I still question how J’onn new what Alura looked like at that time so he could pose as her; did Eliza show him a picture or something because he can’t read Kara’s mind. I really liked “Midvale”.
Okay I’ve been thinking about this some, Mon said he’s been in the future for 7 years and clearly part of that time he was married because he and Irma seem like they’re at least older newlyweds at best so say 2 years that leaves 5 years he might be single and 4 if you give them dating time at least and if you figure some of that time he was looking to go back to Kara while some he spent being cured from the lead could part of it be the reason he moved on arguably faster than her be because he looked her up and found out she was happy with someone else so he moved on too not wanting to break up their marriage anymore than Kara is into breaking up his now? I hope that continues by the way because I enjoy mature Mon since he’s come back and it wold just destroy Kara as a person to me if she caused problems to try and get him back.
I can’t see them killing Kara so I’m just thinking he looked her up when he couldn’t back quickly and found out she’s happy so he decided to be happy as well and that’s why he’s trying to be civil with her but he isn’t saying much because they don’t want to mess up the future. It’s why he didn’t set the ship to wake them up when he and Kara were dating (which he could have) and he’d shown up shortly after younger him left – he loves his wife and he knows Kara is going to be okay so he just wanted to go home which is now the 31st century. Thoughts on Mon’s time between arriving and daring Irma?
I think Ruby has powers they’re just not as strong as Sam’s or even Kara’s arguably; I think if they looked at her she’d be stronger than average kids when her powers are activated and she’d have better hearing but beyond that I’m not sure…I don’t think she did get all the powers but you’d think she’d have some. It’ll be interesting to see how they go because that could give an insight into Kara’s future children.
I so want to see Kara and J’onn’s dad redecorating his apartment!
Ruby is definitely going to be a big factor in the Reign battle; can Sam hold off Reign harming her to end Sam enough for everyone else to stop Reign we’ll see. It’s definitely going to be a sad reveal when Ruby finds out because Reign isn’t just hurting her mom but she’s also hurting Ruby’s favorite hero Supergirl for seemingly no reason; it’s not like Sam wants to do it though because she likes the group. It’s just going to be a very emotional reveal and it’s again easily been the best of the season and one of the best of the series I think!
I really hope we get some Brainiac 5 flirting with Kara because they were adorable in the “Justice League: Unlimited” cartoon that time; also if they go there no jealous Mon please as he’s best when mature and he’s married so don’t make problems.
I’m certainly not going to argue with rating this episode an 8 as that’s my emotional rating, 7.5 is the one with all the nitpicks in a sense; I love Caitlin Parrish stuff usually, she has yet to really let me down.
It’s fair to criticize the group because Alex still has guns thus would try to normally protect Kara despite the odds. Personally I want to see Alex yell at Clark because this is why we don’t take all the kryptonite Clark! They could also possibly use red sun grenades to strip her Earth powers…she’d still arguably be more powerful than Kara as she’s engineered to be tough but at least it’s a start and with Alex’s training it should be easier for the group to take her down. What happens after then will also be interesting as they’ve said she will divide the group on the path of save or kill; I’m hoping Alex is on the save side not just because of Ruby but also because she doesn’t want people to think Kara could ever be unredeemed if she went dark again or to look at her with fear even just as good Supergirl; I definitely hope there’s a real divide and not just two of the group on Sam’s side while everyone else is against them. I want to see some pro-save, some want her taken out completely thinking it’s safer/only way to stop her and at least one to two conflicted about what to do.
Again I agree with Blackhawksfan Reign has been a great plot on the series!
I am SO in favor of James staying at CatCo! I still need more from James’s side to buy Lena/James but I will say they make more sense than Morgan/Lena – that makes no sense at thus point; at least with Lames you could argue she doesn’t know how much he hated her last season and some this season but she knows Morgan wants her gone so it makes no sense for them to even think about dating. I agree with Darryl regarding James/Lena.
I’m looking forward to seeing Alex be someone’s J’onn because that would be a nice fully circle kind of thing with them I think; that said I don’t need Ruby on the show all the time to show that. That said, if Ruby is going to be on cam we also have Sam because she’s been fun! I might be in the minority but I wouldn’t mind seeing what Sam and Alex look like as a couple; I would say because they haven’t had much time together and because they don’t really know each other that probably won’t happen but then they pushed James and Lena together despite everything so everyone is game for a pairing now! How long they last is the question. It doesn’t even have to be this season, Sam and Ruby could return and we see AgentReign as they’re called.
Eliza is good and Helen’s doing a wonderful job, I’m all for more of her; I do still ship her with J’onn I’ll admit (been a fan of theirs since S1) so I’d like to see that if they couldn’t get M’gann back or they break up but also just Eliza popping in and out like she does is fun to see. 🙂
Stay safe Karen!
To be fair the crossover episodes always produce big numbers for the shows as fans don’t want to miss their characters moments so I don’t know if you can really use that as average numbers; yes it’s great we had more people seeing the Danvers sisters and hopefully they’ll want to check out the show this season but I’m going to be realistic and not look for those numbers each week as I know from personal experience not every viewer watches every show. I do believe we’re still behind “Flash” in the number 2 spot for superhero shows and in the top 3 network wide shows so that’s great but I look for all the superhero shows to go back to their average 1 million views for the rest of the season as the crossover is a special thing. As long as we keep doing seasons like this well enough to get renewed I’m good.
I miss the “and rocks a mini skirt!” opening to the podcast, will it be back as well? The special opening with John’s intro worked well for his arrival to the podcast but the original opening is so iconic to me I miss it when listening to the podcast opening on this show.
Some blog post comments…
“I enjoyed the episode, but to me Reign sees less of a threat than Kara’s Earth-X self. It is hard to see her getting beaten by Reign after the events of the crossover.” – that’s fair as Kara-X was pretty evil but could it be Reign isn’t fully in her powers yet, that maybe Sam is fighting her at times so she’s not as strong as she would be because she has to suppress her as well? I’m hoping they’ll show the difference in Kara and Reign as you can’t forget Reign was created to be a destroyer so she not only has typical Kryptonian on Earth strength but also Kryptonian engineered strength.
Hey Aaron!
I’m saving your comments to chat about on the next ‘cast. We’ll probably be doing at least one during the hiatus, but the show will be back pretty soon anyway. I want to talk about some of these things with everybody – so I’ll save my comments for then. 🙂
I’ll say this though – the opening is staying for now. We may change it after John’s been with the show a while.
