When not even the mention of potstickers can rouse Kara from her grief, it takes a monumental save of the city to finally knock some sense into her in the Supergirl season premiere. We get off to a fast start as questions of foes and friends arise immediately in the faces of old and new characters alike.
The season three premiere of Supergirl, titled “Girl of Steel” originally aired on Monday October 9, 2017. We are about six months removed from the season 2 finale, keeping in line with the other DC shows, and are reintroduced into Supergirl’s world during a very dark, emotional time of Kara’s life.
Morgan Edge
The tantalizing tech and potentiality for vivacious villains was overshadowed by a lot of emotional drama in this week’s episode. It took me a rewatch in order to understand why Supergirl knew it was Morgan Edge in the end. Ah, Morgan Edge. Remember the character on Smallville? Good times. 
Adrian Pasdar, an actor often asked to portray a character where he could be a bad guy… but maybe not… is believable as the business powerhouse CEO, but the moments where he’s supposed to be the most fantastical seem to be muted by indirectness. If he truly is to replace the Maxwell Lord character, which was notably lacking from season 2, we want to see him fully embrace the limelight. I hope to see him showcased much more brilliantly in upcoming episodes.
On the bright side, his introduction paved the ideal way for Lena to become a more prominent character this season. Undoubtedly saving the episode for me, Katie McGraff’s portrayal of the youngest Luthor was sweet and sassy and all kinds of business savvy. Without Cat at the head of Catco, at least there will be another powerful woman to lead it up. And since Lena and James’ rapport seems to be on point, this has to bode well in contrast to the atrocious introduction of Snapper Carr last season.
The Opening
While Daydreaming played softly in the background, Kara encountered two people who are no longer with her. First Mon-El, and then her mother. Now, I have not been shy about my love for Smallville. Take that as you will, it was great for its time and had its moments, in spite of its flaws. So when news broke that Erica Durance would be taking over the role of Alura, Kara’s mother, it was a happy, happy day in my head. And it still is! Seeing Erica on screen again was awesome, I’m very excited to see more.
However, I want to bring up a different point about this scene. I apologize for the chosen picture, here, but I wanted to ask about the planet (?) in the background? It moves positions like 3 times in this scene. As far as I’ve ever read, this isn’t a typical Kryptonian landscape… so is this indicative something else? Something that may be coming down the road?

For Supergirl, it’s not easy growing up the most powerful teenager in the world. But as she tries desperately to carve out a place for herself on Earth, the Teen of Steel struggles with the mysteries of her past on Krypton and her potential as one of Earth’s mightiest heroes.
Promising a dying boy to use her spectacular powers for the practical purpose of curing his terminal illness, Supergirl upsets the universe’s rules of life and death in the service of her impossible quest and may have to face off with Superman and Batman to accomplish it. Should heroes of unfathomable power attempt to change humanity? Or are their offers of help more harmful than good?

Adrian Pasdar will always be Declan from “Mysterious Ways” to me first; although admittedly I’m still more a fan of his wife, Natalie Maines from the Dixie Chicks, than him.
I’m definitely excited to see the Reign progression this season, if it’s half as good as they talked up it’ll be good and if it’s as good as they’ve teased it’ll be great!
I definitely laughed at James’s “Guardian is important but so is James Olsen” speech because as Emilee said that was SO not the attitude from last season. I hope Guardian fades out and we get more of James showing his talents as James because Guardian just doesn’t fit the show, he feels like an “Arrow” character more than a “Supergirl” one. I don’t begrudge James helping but I just don’t think he needs the costume or the lies to Kara to do it.
Speaking of Kara, I still question her turning on her Danvers side as it was her in Supergirl mode that pushed the button and it’s the fact she’s Kryptonian that Rhea disliked given their planets’ feud so shouldn’t she be anti her alien side instead? I know she has to be Supergirl as the show is called “Supergirl” but the whole “Kara Danvers was a mistake” reason felt inorganic to me given the situation from last year; yes Rhea also disliked Kara having power over Mon so I can understand her having reservations about Kara Danvers as well but really it was more her alien connections that caused the issues than her human side so it would have been interesting to see the episode be Kara avoiding Supergirl activities and people questioning her then at the end she comes back for her friends but there’s a season theme of her questioning her place still rather than her saying her human side is the issue.
A great point to Emilee about the watch and how Kara should have showed up as Supergirl instead of Kara because she didn’t know what she would be facing as the watch is meant for emergencies! Now I’m thinking about the watches and wondering why Alex didn’t use it to try and tip off Kara to her location in “Alex”. A good point by Karen that it would be interesting to see the watches worked into an episode just to remind fans of their importance and what happens when they’re used/misused.
No to Lyla Diggle-ing Maggie! As much as I enjoy seeing Sanvers together I’d rather they ship Maggie to Gotham, the city not the show of course, than have her always just on the phone/in the other room as I want to see Alex’s romance just as much as any romance Kara or J’onn or anyone else gets. I know Lyla pops up on “Arrow” at times but not enough nor is she mentioned as much as you’d think being married to a lead so I’d rather Maggie and Alex break up and maybe Maggie comes back later than have her only there in name essentially. I don’t think they’ll kill her off based on how they talk in interviews but I do hope they take advantage of the Gotham connection because that would be a missed opportunity if she goes to Metropolis next or something. For the hardcore Sanvers fans, Maggie could always return if they get Floriana again so they might still be endgame but for now I’m personally okay with the break-up (the reason for the split is suspect on timing based on spoilers I’ve read) as again I want to see Alex’s romance plots treated equally instead of being off screened.
