Welcome back to Maid of Steel! Emilee is back to help Karen discuss the penultimate episode of Supergirl season 2, entitled “Resist”, which originally aired on Monday May 15, 2017. Cat Grant returns just in time to deliver a mammoth of an inspirational speech, as Kara & Co. search for a way to save Mon-El and Lena from the Daxam ship before eradicating National City of their invaders. In this episode we had surprise appearances, unlikely alliances, and an arranged marriage that nearly became binding.

Resist

As far as inspirational speeches go, I was inspired. Perhaps Cat’s “resist” speech had an even greater effect on me because of the fact we haven’t had one in 20-some episodes, or perhaps it was a confirmation of just how essential Cat is to this show. Would her speech have had it’s effect without the first season when we got to see the full spectrum of Cat’s colorful personality? In short, this episode confirmed for me just how much this show needs Cat Grant. She humbles Kara in tremendous ways and actually makes the Supergirl character more bearable even in her most self-righteous of times.

All of the important women of Supergirl, heroes and villains alike, converged in this penultimate season 2 episode. Lillian’s ally/antagonist role was predictable and a little dry, but Rhea’s single-minded villainy saved the entire episode by carrying her plan as far as she could with everything she could. She has a ton of tricks up her sleeve, as we know Lillian does too, but as we can’t entirely make out what Lillian’s endgame is (other than the general eradication of all alien life), it’s more rewarding at this juncture to watch Rhea squirm and celebrate while her plan plays out.

Next week is the season finale! We can already sense an epic showdown between Superman and Supergirl on the horizon. If you missed Cougar’s Comic Corner last week, be sure to check out Supergirl Vol. 1: Last Daughter of Krypton (The New 52) (because there may be a little showdown of note in that one).
