Welcome back to Maid of Steel! After a nearly month-long hiatus, we’re back covering Supergirl Season 2 Episode 18 “Ace Reporter” which originally aired on April 24, 2017. The long-awaited guest appearance of Rahul Kohli, best known for his role on iZombie, did not disappoint. From quips to touching moments, this episode had all the makings of a decent filler episode. What was your favorite one liner of the episode?
Human Trial One
In true mystery fashion, the clues around this week’s villain of the week unfolded just a little bit at a time. As we learn, or are reminded, by Karen in this episode, Jack Spheer is a pretty obscure villain from comic book history. But by taking some of the essential elements of his character and integrating him into the Supergirl universe, we got a refreshing and more interesting twist on the head of Biomax.
The lingering questions around when Jack was more sentient than controlled not withstanding, the balance between Jack the Boyfriend and Jack the Biomax monster was really ideal. When Jack was himself, fully himself, he couldn’t understand why he’d let Lena walk out two years ago. But when Biomax took over, it revealed how his passion took a bit of a nasty turn and purported his good intentions.
Afraid of Who I’ll Be
As the love-child of Lionel Luthor, we knew Lena must have some darkness deep within. Growing up with a mother who did not love her, only to discover well into her adulthood why that love was withheld, is damaging. Lena is strong and independent, but she’s also human. At first this scene between Kara and Lena confused me, because I hadn’t really picked up on the fact that Lena said she feels nothing. The only time she feels anything, in fact, was when she thought about Beth rotting in prison.
But if Lena reacts to this situation, to the death of a former lover and dear friend, with cold indifference, then we do have a problem on our hands. An interesting problem, however! Consider a possibility: in her desperate attempt to feel something, she betrays the people who trust her.
In looking ahead at what might come in the final episodes of the season, the climax we’re building toward, we know that something has to happen with Lena. We already have two villains this season, both of whom seem to be coming to a head, for the grand finale, are they going to add a third to that pot? Or will Lena surprise us and instead of owning the Luthor name, choose friendship and trust over her own pursuit of feeling human?

Someone has stolen the Book of Destiny, an all-powerful artifact that gives its possessors complete knowledge of the present, past and future. Batman and Green Lantern must form alliances with many brave champions, including Supergirl, Blue Beetle, Lobo and the Legion of Super-Heroes, to take back the book and restore the fabric of reality.
I agree with Karen – the guest this week were great!
“C is for cookie!” – well played Karen!
Katie is Irish but she does do American well. She has chemistry with everyone!
I definitely agree with Blackhawksfan regarding Mon; I will say I don’t mind him being a hero just for Kara but I wish they wouldn’t try to hide that fact, again embrace him as an anti-hero who makes no bones about the fact he’s playing “good guy” to get the girl because if he was on his own he’d beat up more villains or take money for his services and why is that a bad thing as he has to buy food and pay rent as well…he’d be on the side of good anti-hero wise but he’d still be openly selfish compared to Kara. They can say all episode long he’s in it more than just for Kara but that’s not how it comes off on screen; as Emilee said he has a lot of screen time, arguably more screen time than Kara, but yet he does nothing…he’s more her maid than a hero like Supergirl. I understood holding him back for a bit as you don’t want another Guardian on the streets but he’s had to learn something by now so why haven’t we seen him in action outside of the one episode with Livewire in which he got his butt handed to him? I’m fully with Karen in that I don’t want him taking Kara’s place but I do feel they could do more with him, as Blackhawksfan suggested have him interacting with more than just Kara (again this could be said for the others such as Maggie interacting with J’onn, Winn, etc besides just Alex or Lena interacting with Alex or Snapper or others outside of just Kara, how interesting would an Alex-Mon team up be? He has potential but this season once paired romantically with Kara he’s just become more of a minus than plus and by extension Kara’s character has suffered arguably in ways such as taking him back when he does something frustrating so it’s like “Why even learn from it?”. I don’t think the show can do anything this season to make me get super excited about Mon because the handling so far; I understand his potential but it was never really showcased consistently so for me Mon is now on the list of characters I liked this season. I enjoy his humor but as a whole Mon is ok to a pass for me.
Season 4 of “Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.” is awesome! The only thing I’d change about it is I’d make Fitzsimmons a siblingship/unrequited love (Fitz loves Jemma but as she said up and down season 2 she loves him as her brother) and make Skimmons the romance, but beyond that S4 has been pretty epic. I’d definitely second the watch vote!
I understand some of Opal Drake’s frustration, but I feel this is a bad time to quit as next week’s episode looks great; maybe he’ll keep up with the reviews and catch up on the rest of the season in a binge. At least he’s willing to check out season 3 and not done fully.
Some blog post comments…
“What was your favorite one liner of the episode?” – “Enjoy the free cheese Ponytail!”.
“Or will Lena surprise us and instead of owning the Luthor name, choose friendship and trust over her own pursuit of feeling human?” – I really hope Lena doesn’t go bad because that’d be too much like Lex and “Supergirl” is not “Superman” – they share DNA like Lena and Lex but they are not the same people so it would be sad to see Lena go Lex basically just because they think they need to copy “Superman”‘s plot for interest. I’m all for Lena and Kara disagreeing and Lena even being arguably dark at times (see Alex beating up people when she doesn’t like their answers) but I don’t want her to be a female Lex – save that with Lillian.
