Supergirl (2011-2015) Vol. 6: Crucible (includes Maxima, who appears in the next episode).
She’s the Last Daughter of Krypton and one of Earth’s greatest heroes, but for Kara Zor-El, being Supergirl means feeling like she’s got no place to call home.
So when a deep-space school called the Crucible-an intergalactic academy that trains the universe’s most powerful beings-comes calling, Supergirl is happy to go. There, she’s no “super hero”-she’s just like everyone else.
But this strange school hides dark secrets. Just what are Kara and her new friends being trained for? And what does Crucible want with Supergirl’s clone “cousin,” Superboy? Once the truth comes out, Supergirl may not make it to graduation…
From writers Mike Johnson (SUPERMAN/BATMAN), Tony Bedard (GREEN LANTERN: NEW GUARDIANS) and K. Perkins in her comics debut, along with artists Emanuela Lupacchino (WORLDS’ FINEST) and Ray McCarthy (GREEN ARROW) comes SUPERGIRL: CRUCIBLE. Class is in session! Collects issues #34-40 and SUPERGIRL: FUTURE’S END #1

I’m with Emilee on wanting more of the series; I so hope they put this on DVD because there are so many episode I want to watch again! I agree with Karen, “Sky High” was good and Danielle did a good job in it.
Barry and Kara were fun together. No Alex sucked. I agree pouty James was not good; the difference with the Oliver factor is he was dating Felicity but James was just acting possessive. I don’t know which was better, the Livewire-Silver Banshee team up or Barry-Kara team up. I liked Silver Banshee as well.
I could definitely see Kara or Kara and the team fighting a dark bad guy, they have Max after all who has charm but is actually pretty dark and Non has been pretty rough with her so I think it would work. I understand there can’t be a massive explanation of events on “Flash” yet because of the schedule, but still I question could they have added some little scene into the episode that aired that following Tuesday just to nod at it? They had Grant filming already, why couldn’t they pull in others to shoot a quickie for “Flash”? Still I am open to letting this play out because if they do mention it it’ll be great even if it’s just a small reference, but if they don’t then that’s where I have issues with some of the outside factors. I am SO glad again that Barry assisted but was not the hero of the episode because had that happened I would have been writing longer opinion spots because again of how that doesn’t sit well with me as a female fan. I have no issues with the portrayals in this episode, it’s the outside things that I question. Again I get the logistics in part to crossovers, but just star wise to get around that again have Melissa go be Powergirl on “Arrow”/”Flash” until you can have her be Supergirl in appearance as well; there are ways to make it seem more balanced I feel. To crossover yes there are limited characters, but did it have to be a crossover now? They could have pulled from the roster and showed another hero from that Earth helping just as easily.
It’s fair to say network wise we’d be in the same position if this was “Superman”, but I don’t think that would still erase the feel of an imbalance calling it a crossover when there may be no real crossover if that makes sense. Hearing the word “crossover” I want see that having an immediate affect on both properties not an affect the season after for one. And to be fair, had this been a male-male situation character wise I don’t know if I would have been as vocal about some aspects because there are more male driven series than female ones; I still would have questioned why are A and B coming over to C but C never goes to A and B if that was happening, but because there are more male lead series that might have been it. Because there is a female-male character dynamic there is that added layer, even if it’s unintentional, of an imbalance when you don’t know all the behind the scenes stuff; until recently rarely did you see female characters being used to get the male characters ratings or getting to play hero to the male characters and because of that inequality I couldn’t help in the first days of all this feeling hesitant about the event. Again Barry was well used and I loved he helped without taking over and it’s great hearing them say the next crossovers will be more thought out connection wise so we’ll see how they do, but this first occurrence because of the history of imbalance just left me asking questions currently. Again I don’t think Greg meant anything negative with any of this, but those feelings are there. Hopefully this all makes sense!
I definitely think Kara meant Gotham in the jailer episode especially sense “Supergirl” runs in the circle of “Man Of Steel”. Kara’s expression when Cat snatched her hand away from the cupcakes was hilarious and priceless! Agreed; Cat has to suspect again at the very least that Kara is Supergirl because again if she can guess Barry is Flash with essentially no evidence then she has to suspect Kara given all that’s happened. I’m fine with them not revealing it until the series final but if they say then she still didn’t know then I call bull; as the theme goes – this Cat is not dumb. It’ll be interesting to see who Lynda Carter plays on “Supergirl”. I liked the multiple universe discussion; “Batman Versus Superman” was good overall, there were pacing issues and Luthor wasn’t great but overall it was good.
Siobhan seeing Livewire’s interrogation is a hand wave moment because there’s no way she should have seen that given those pods are in the basement. I get they needed to show her finding her ally, but I think it could have worked just as well had they been bringing Leslie down the hall, with precaution measures of course so she can’t escape, and her yelling about Cat and Siobhan saw that and broke her out later than Siobhan seeing through a crack suddenly in the hallway. Again a few hand wave moments in this episode. Hopefully we’ll see Lucy getting less taken advantage of arguably and showcasing her leader skills. I’m excited for summer podcast episodes; I especially look forward to any on Huntress given that friendship with Kara. Good podcast!
Some blog post comments…
I wonder which version of Maxima we’ll see, will she be more pre-New 52 or N52?
Dear Maid of Steel Podcasters:
Montefescu here.
You asked me about how I rate television shows, video productions or film (cinema) presentations?
The art form drives the analysis, so I break it down by:
a. –the writing that underlays the effort.
b. –the teamwork that goes into turning the writing into an overall seen, acted, and directed story/event (music videos, commercials, and video art are similar subjects that can be analyzed in this manner)
c. –on a sliding scale score of 1-5 that gives you the idea of the ratio of success goal that the production team wanted or hoped.
In the last Supergirl episode, “World’s Finest” I thought the writing was average so it received the 3 band. the production product was a 4, while the target number for the expected result for which the show’s crew aimed was a 5. They missed the goal by very little mainly because of Grant Gustin and Melissa Benoist. Actors and production values stepped up and pulled it out of the average territory in which it was inured.
The final score : 3/4/5 (3/5, 4/5, 5/5))is presented as a double stacked fraction to give you an idea of ratios.
For Red Faced, a comparison episode, I use for illustration which I liked better than this one that end ratio was 4/4.5/5 mainly due to the strong performances of Calista Flockhart, Iddo Goldberg, and Melissa Benoist. I found some faulty writing issues with the Mehcad Brooks’ James “the Chicken man” Olsen’s character. He was misused for comedic and dramatic love interest effect. Lois Laneing this actor does not and has never worked. The overemphasis on the Cat and Katherine (Katherine Graham mother daughter type) soap opera ate into Red Tornado story time. However these c and d elements were better written into the overall plot plan than “World’s Finest” to feed into Supergirl’s character fuel her rage as a “war orphan” with parental abandonment issues of her own. I would have liked to seen the same issues explored with T.O. Morrow and his tele-operated puppet that he was to Gipetto into a real bad boy. There was no time set aside to background such a story; that is to see why Morrow and his son are murdered as the Danvers sisters killed them both, for much the same exact parental abandonment and rejection reasons he sought to kill them. Remember his substitute father figure, Sam Lane, rejected him?^1 That was all that was left of that so important story line. That resulted in a 4 for writing this episode. DX and FX (*botched tornado FX work), goofy costume design, and some static set piece shots the director mishandled resulted in a 4 for production effort.
^1 I’m surprised that among the many reviewers I read than none of them saw that was a critical sub-story that was pruned out of the script for time.
