In “For The Girl Who Has Everything” Kara is forced to choose between the perfect life with a family she lost or live in a world with pain with the family she has made. Supergirl finds that family makes it a home. Join the Scarlet Cougar and xforce11 (Geoff) as they discuss this powerful episode of Supergirl.
Hello all, xforce11 here. Standing in the gap for Miss Ice this week on the blog post as well as the podcast. I do hope you will forgive me as my style of blogging is different from hers and my flight in from Gotham City has been bumpy 😀 . Now on to the blog.
Kara’s circle of friends had discovered that she is missing from work and not in action as Supergirl. James, don’t call him Jimmy, Wynn and Alex head to her home. Alex doesn’t have a key but she has got her boot and the door is open in one kick. Kara’s family of friends discover her with the Black Mercy attached and the DEO is summoned for support. Try as they may Alex and the DEO cannot remove the Black Mercy without killing Kara in the process. Alex is at her whits end and runs to the hologram computer and begs Kara’s mother for help. Alura hears Alex’s confession about how she felt about Kara growing up and how badly she wants to save her sister. Alas hologram Alura can offer neither absolution or a solution to Alex.
Astra learns that Non has used the Black Mercy to take Kara out of the picture without breaking Astra’s command for not hurting her. Astra is furious with him, but she is divided. Astra knows that for her family makes it a home, but she sees humanity a curse to the Earth. She chooses to slip away and help Kara. Alex is roaming around Kara’s home overwhelmed when Astra arrives. Alex shoots first and asks questions later. She accuses Astra of Kara’s plight. Astra shares that it was Non’s doing. She says that Kara saved her and she owes it to Kara to help her. She gives Alex the much need info on the Black Mercy and how to get Kara out. Astra returns to base. Non gives the orders to the troops and then questions Astra’s loyalty. Astra is ready for action and Myriad will be unleashed.
James & Wynn are trying their best to fend of Cat and protect Kara’s normal life. But it is not good enough and J’onn will have to take up Kara’s mantle. J’onn quickly learns that playing Supergirl is much easier than being Kara. J’onn would rather be in Martian prison than dealing with Cat. Cat chews out Kara and sees through the play acting. She ends up sending Kara away for the day to get her out of her sight. J’onn has quickly learned that Kara needs her family of friends to help her be Supergirl and survive as Kara. He permits James & Wynn to be there as Alex goes in to save Kara. The issue is the DEO does not have the time to make the tech needed to get Alex into Kara’s dream world. Enter Maxwell Lord! He bargains to do it for early release, then a case of Dr Pepper and his Netflix, but finally does it to fight off the aliens he despises.
The Black Mercy works by attaching itself to a host and feeding off the body while it grants the host a perfect fantasy. Only when the host chooses to reject the fantasy can the Black Mercy be removed. Kara awakes to a perfect Krypton. She has robotic servants, a complete loving family, a boyfriend, and Non has been banished to the Phantom Zone. As much as Kara tries to fight it, the Black Mercy is winning by erasing every doubt and memory of Earth. But even in the midst of it all Kara is protecting Kal-El. Alex arrives and attempts to convince Kara of the true situation but the Black Mercy prevents it and protects the fantasy. Alex makes a passionate speech and Kara breaks out of the delusion and chooses reality.
Kara awakes and is out for blood! She takes on Non as J’onn and Alex take on Astra. Non escapes by forcing Supergirl to protect innocent humans. After a battle of words and powers, Alex stabs Astra in the back with a Kryptonite Katana. Supergirl arrives and says her goodbyes to her aunt, before Non’s forces arrive. Myriad has been implemented and Non will kill anyone, including Kara, who gets in his way.
As action packed as this episode was, the power was in the dialogue. The Danvers Sisters fought well with their words and deeds. In my mind, Chyler Leigh knocked it out of the park as Alex. She conveyed her love for Kara, her regret for not treating her well as a child, her devotion to her now and her desire to protect her no mater the cost. J’onn covered for Alex in the death of Astra, because he rightly saw that Alex is Supergirl’s hero. It was Alex’s words of truth and love that brought Kara around. You saw the longing on Alex’s face as she shared that she would love if Kara had her Kryptonian family back, but it would not be this. Alex says “Pain is a part of life. It makes us who we are. It makes you a hero.” Kara takes those words to heart and in her battle with Non says that it is because she has know both love and pan that she will fight for her home, Earth. It might be a trop espoused from Buffy The Vampire Slayer and many other shows, but it is true. Family is not always what we are born into, but who we choose. Kara has chosen friends well and those friends are her family. And family makes it a home!

Cougar’s Comic Corner
This week’s selection is Action Comics Vol. 1 #595 by John Byrne
From Karen:
Byrne can be a little controversial at times, but he’s a monster talent in the comic book industry. He’s worked on such titles as X-Men, Fantastic Four, and Iron Man; and he’s been inducted into the Comic Book “Hall of Fame”
The Synopsis for this book is as follows:
A black-and-white clad woman with a skull-painted face calling herself the Silver Banshee terrorizes Metropolis by rampaging through bookstores looking for a certain book while killing whoever she touches. When Superman confronts her, he discovers (though seemingly a bit too late) that it’s not her touch that kills, but rather her voice. As Metropolis mourns for the loss of Superman as he lies lifeless in his coffin, his ghost seemingly emerges to carry on the fight. As Silver Banshee plows through another bookstore in order to find the book, she confronts Superman’s ghost, who is unaffected by her killing voice, nor by her deadly scream. As she vanishes, Superman appears alive, revealing that the Silver Banshee’s voice had only rendered him unconscious, and that his “ghost” was really the Martian Manhunter, who both discover that the Silver Banshee’s power has no effect over somebody whose identity is masked.
Some theories are floating around that Siobhan Smythe from the next new episode is really Siobhan McDougal whose alter-ego is The Silver Banshee. Whether she is or not, this is a very entertaining issue, and it includes one of our favorite heroes as the “surprise guest”, J’onn J’onzz.

Nice to see XForce11 playing Jonn to Emilee’s Kara in this instance, hopefully he’ll have an easier time here than Jonn had with Cat. 🙂
Again I hope they don’t go crossover crazy; they’re fun at times, but I want to see the individuals for awhile not the Justice League. I like the League don’t get me wrong, but if they’re in a rush for it just bring back the cartoon by Bruce Timms because that was awesome. Again I’d like to see Kara have her own show instead of worrying about crossover stuff all the time; Karen makes a fair point about they can bring in viewers, but they can also lose viewers if they do them too much and it lessens the show in some eyes. I just think they’re best left as specials that happen no sooner than season two so you get to really see the individual character and only occur every other season at most; again I want to watch “Supergirl” for Supergirl not Flash or Arrow, but that’s me. The “Legends Of Tomorrow” Flarrow crossover was good, but I wouldn’t want to see it every week; well maybe the “Arrow” side because Felicity is awesome, but yeah, keep the crossovers to a minimum I feel especially when you’re dealing with multiple universes, that gets confusing enough in comics let’s not rush it to screens. The extra viewers would be great, but I do think there’s some possible downsides as well; we’ll see how they do, but I am not as excited as some.
Jonn as Kara was hilarious! I have to say, as much as I loved the Alex stuff in this episode I did think we’d see more Kara in her dream because that would have been a nice way to showcase her time on Krypton since we don’t spend a lot time there when Clark’s story is being told so this was a chance to really showcase how they lived and we didn’t get that much. I just thought we’d see a bit more of Kara’s life on Krypton. Still upset they killed Astra so soon. I agree, I don’t think Kara would have blew up at Alex had she told her the truth then but I do think she might question her some because Kara still saw good in Astra so I could see her questioning Alex’s choice at the very least; having this linger will lead to the anger possibly and again she may not hate her but she will look at her differently as Jonn said and Jimmy said about Alex to Jonn. How long that look lasts is another debate, hopefully for at least half season so it feels organic, but it’s certainly not going to lead to a positive discussion between the two siblings because of the delay in telling her. It’ll be interesting to see how they deal with this event and if Alex will break and tell Kara first.
Supervillain High would be interesting. I don’t feel Astra turn on Kara, she stuck with her plan yes but that was nothing new – it’s not like she told Kara she wouldn’t go through with it and she did help Alex figure out how to save Kara so I wouldn’t say she turned against her in this episode. I wonder what Max would say if Jonn brought him a case of Sprite as a reward for not trying to mess them over this week? He’s still a bad guy so he doesn’t get his Dr. Pepper, but he can have caffeine. Also I’d love to see Peter do a Dr. Pepper commercial now. “He didn’t do anything nefarious.” – yet.
Girl here Karen; regarding Cat’s attitude, I did love her addressing the vibe of anger Winn and Jimmy though she was giving about Adam towards Kara saying she was a professional and she wasn’t going to let that affect her at work, but she kind of did and I can understand her being upset he left feeling like she wasn’t good enough but that did make her statement of professionalism feel a bit hollow. She was being arguably fair with her anger at “Kara” because she would treat an assistant that way but there was some personal jealousy which came out as anger behind it as well I feel. As for the crossover with “Flash”, I am happy to hear it won’t be the season finale, but I’m still cautious of it; I’m sad they’re calling it “Worlds Finest” but there’s no talk of a Huntress appearance in it also; that is Kara as Powergirl and Helena Wayne as Huntress’s comic book title so that’s sad to see that title but not Helena. Hopefully we’ll see Huntress on the show given her friendship with Kara in the comics; I’d love for it to be Bertinelli, but since “Arrow” as her we might get Wayne who’s good, but I personally like Bertinelli more. However since “Supergirl” is it’s own universe we could have a Bertinelli too; I vote Amy Acker to go meta as they say since she voiced Huntress in “Justice League: Unlimited”. So yes, better news but still not thrilled. I don’t think you need Astra to die to ramp up killing Non, if that’s the case he should have killed her for helping Kara which affects their plans, and I could see him doing that given his whole “I’ll protect this plan even from you” speech near the series start, but Alex doing it feels more like for sister drama then making Non even more evil. If they needed Astra dead why not do it taking out Non trying to make amends for her bringing him into the group? Or again have Non kill her but have her telling Kara he was wrong about her but not about stoping the humans from creating the next Krypton. Non was evil without Astra dying in my opinion so her death doesn’t do anything to lessen his need for going; I’m going to miss Astra. I loved seeing Kara in a state of rage, that’s one of the things I’ve loved about her character and what makes her standout from Clark – Kara will embrace the darkness more than Clark, be that making friends with a darker character like Huntress or almost killing Non because she knows he can take the beating where as Clark would stop and the only time we’ve seen him kill recently is in “Man Of Steel” to stop Zod who didn’t give him a choice and in an alternate universe killing Lex in “Justice League: Unlimited”; this isn’t to say Kara is an anti-hero because she’s very much a good guy hero, she’s just not as boy scout as Clark is if that makes sense. Basically she’ll do some things Clark might not and she’s okay with that. Again that gray area has always been a factor to Supergirl I’ve enjoyed; nothing against Clark because his ultra goodness is a good thing too, but I do enjoy the added layer with others.
I do enjoy Max and the way Peter is playing the smooth evil vibe, but again NO ROMANCES WITH ALEX FOR HIM! Cerebral chess match banter buddies only! I know I’ve talked about this series a lot so far, it’s great, but he reminds me “Justice League”‘s Lex Luther with the smoothness and it’s just so fun to watch so I do enjoy him as a bad guy and hope he’s our main recurring bad guy; he’s our Lex Luther and I’m okay with that. The guy who plays the Penguin on “Gotham” is probably my favorite, what he’s doing with that character is awesome and definitely a bad guy you can love to see even though he’s going to mess with stuff; I also like how the actress playing Catwoman is doing her. Captain Cold on “Legends Of Tomorrow” is awesome, I have yet to be disappointed in his stories on series; he and Heatwave and Sara are my favorite trio on LOT, so much fun. I’m glad to hear even non-comic book fans can enjoy the series; I agree the cast is great. I have to say I didn’t find Alex’s speech about feeling guilty for how she saw Kara at first that shocking, to me she said nothing I haven’t heard older siblings say regarding younger siblings so it really was a perfectly normal statement in my mind. This was a great episode. I agree with XForce11, I don’t think Alex at this point knows what Jonn is fully able to do power wise. UPSMan delivering the humor once again! I always assume Maxwell Lord is plotting. “Blood isn’t the only way to be a family” – great saying and I agree about that getting more visibility.
Karen should start calling the central time zone the Phantom Zone because it does exist, central is a real thing Karen, and it does affect her world, she hosts with people in it, but since she doesn’t live there she doesn’t care about what people do, when things air. I know this is another lame joke, but I can’t stop myself from saying it; not everyone can be UPSMan. Another good job by Geoff aka Jonn and Karen who’s much easier to work with than Cat!
Some blog post comments…
“Alex doesn’t have a key but she has got her boot and the door is open in one kick.” – which was awesome, but come on Alex you seriously have a key; I wonder who fixed Kara’s door after that?
“In my mind, Chyler Leigh knocked it out of the park as Alex.” – agreed!
“Family is not always what we are born into, but who we choose.” – nicely said.
A good blog job XForce11.
Thanks Aaron again for your awesome feedback! I was a little miffed about being compared to Cat until you clarified it near the end, and now I’m mollified – so good job there.
I agree on the UPS Man. Every time I edit his feedback he makes me giggle. I’m glad I get to hear it before we record, because I get to look more professional on the podcast that way. 🙂
THANK YOU for not wanting to ship Alex/Max. No. Just… No.
I think they should put the Dr. Pepper just out of reach to torment Max. Then let him have a third of a can every two hours. All the Sprite he wants though. LOL
Pretty sure they won’t go bananas on the X-Over since it’s a dual-network thing. I’m keeping my mind open, but it definitely can be a tricky thing. They’ve done so well with them on the Berlanti shows – including The Flash in it’s first season – that I feel like I can hold out hope that they’ll do it justice. (see what I did there?)
I also dig that Kara isn’t the “Boy Scout” (Of course in her case “Girl Scout”) that Clark is, and I hope she stays that way. I like the ragey stuff as well. She has a right to be that way IMO.
Thanks for listening and commenting! I hope we continue to enliven your earholes! <3
I’m glad to hear you enjoyed the feedback Scarlet Cougar, I know it’s always very in-depth aka long so thank you for taking the time to read it. I know not many people use this format, but if they stop by I don’t want them to worry about posting first if they’re shy but if they’d like to leave a comment they can see this is a fun way to say “thank you” to you hosts as well as spark more discussions on the series and the more interest the show and podcast gets the more episodes we may get; also discussions really emerge you into the series and it’s just another way to expand the world and fans love. I also enjoy posting here because it shows your GSM bosses what a good job you’re doing and that fans are tuning in so again they’ll want to keep the show going. 🙂
Being called Cat is a compliment overall, she gives arguably great advice!
I don’t know which was funnier this week UPSMan calling Cat Ally McBeal or XForce11 saying “if you don’t know how to use a phone…” because while he didn’t mean for it to come across as humorous, he’s actually on point regarding how little people actually use their phones for calling now days. If the voicemails are edited UPSMan I can only imagine the humor that’s in an unedited one; I will say though I’m starting to think Alex and Cat more in a bar drinking and just having great vent sessions every time he says Ally Cat. I hope UPSMan doesn’t mind, Ally Cat is totally going to be my shorthand name for Alex Cat scenes if any happen. Keep on delivering the humor UPSMan!
I will admit, PHYSICALLY Max and Alex look good together, but I feel you could put any two of these show characters together and the same could be said; it’s a good looking cast. And again they do have GREAT banter chemistry, but romance is a no because Max wants to kill Kara or imprison her and that’s number one on Alex’s “No” list so while I support them going at it banter wise I can’t support them romance wise. Poor Max, he’s been asking for a Dr. Pepper since like episode 2 and he has yet to get one; Dr. Pepper is Maxwell Lord’s true love. I wonder if he’s a fan of all Dr. Peppers or just the original?
I fully plan to judge the crossover as I do all episodes, but I am admittedly cautious about it because you never know if they’ll feel organic or too much about the guest star. The Flarrow “Legends Of Tomorrow” crossover worked, but still you never know; we’ll see what they come up with because again it could turn out to be one of the best episodes of the season or it could be fun but not one you’ll really remember beyond the guest star. Again hearing it’s not the season finale definitely helped me relax some because as I said I wasn’t keen on that occurring as I really want to see Kara get her own props before they start having her share the spotlight; I will judge the crossover as any other episode.
I do see what you did there and I so badly want to ask will the justice be unlimited?
“I also dig that Kara isn’t the “Boy Scout” (Of course in her case “Girl Scout”) that Clark is, and I hope she stays that way. I like the ragey stuff as well. She has a right to be that way IMO.” – agreed. I really like how they’re writing Kara where she’s mostly bubbly and full of hope but when someone shows her they’re not going to change (Non and Maxwell) and the only way to stop them is to take them out in some form then that’s what she’ll do; Melissa plays both sides very well. I’m definitely enjoy “Supergirl”‘s version of Kara so far.
Thank you again for taking the time to reply!
Aaron,
Thanks so much. It is very cool that you take the time to leave great written feedback. Love you points. I agree with you that an animated JLU would be great but have to be geared to the right audience and on the right network. I think Karen will like your comment about the Central time zone being the Phantom Zone. Emilee, Darrell and some of our other GSM hosts maybe not so much 😀 . Robin Lord Taylor is great on Gotham and Karen & I would welcome your feedback on Gotham Undercover’s blog as well. Thanks Aaron and talk to you soon.
Thank you very much for the compliment Geoff; I always hope my comments are worth the reader’s time. As I said I know they’re long, but I can’t help but get passionate when talking about a series/character I enjoy.
I can’t tell you how much I love and miss Bruce Timms “Justice Leage” series, that was such a great show and I highly recommend it to anyone who hasn’t seen it yet. Great character work, good stories with smart writing, a wonderful use of lesser known characters in season two (the big three are good, but they’re not the only ones existing in the DC world), and really nice visuals is the short report. So much love for it.
I’m a member of the Phantom Zone myself so hopefully my fellow Centralites won’t hold it against me; if they do, I request it be in the form of Alex Danvers. 🙂 When we break free from our location and arrive on Karen’s Earth I’m going to change all the clocks in her life to central time so she’ll know, to borrow the tag line from another epically awesome show, you are being watched. Ha.
I’m going to be honest about “Gotham” to me, I really enjoy Penguin (again he’s my favorite live action portrayal of the character) and Catwoman but I don’t love the show. I watched most of season one, but fell out near the end; I felt they were burning through the DC villains list way to quick, the jumbled timelines (for example there’s no way Renee Montoya would have worked with James Gordon as she was a kid at the time he’d be in his 30s) weren’t my favorite thing but I could deal with it, however, I still don’t understand why they killed Bruce’s parents off so quick – we know it’s going to happen so why not be fresh and explore who Thomas and Martha were as individuals and a couple because the whole Batman thing has honestly been done to the point I’m left feeling very “Meh. Seen it.” during most of those scenes. The actor playing young Bruce I enjoy watching, but I wish they’d done more pre-Batman stuff with the parents. It’s interesting seeing this Alfred compared to the older version in most stories but it’s not enough to keep me watching each week; as much as I love to see Penguin and am interested to see if they do more with Ivy, “Gotham” just doesn’t hold me like “Supergirl” or “Arrow”. I will say the “Gotham: Rise Of The Villains” promos have looked good so it might get me back to see what happens there and what Penguin is doing, but I don’t know if it’ll suck me in enough to have me writing feedback. I thank you for the welcome though. 🙂
Again thank you for taking the time to reply back!
