The residents of National City are acting very strangely. It is as if they all have the same objective in mind. Kara has to seek help to stop it before the people she has sworn to protect become enslaved by her Uncle Non. He claims that he wants to save the people of Earth from destroying their home. Non says he wants to honor Astra’s plan to use a program called Myriad to keep Earth from suffering the same fate as Krypton.
Kara goes to the Fortress to seek advice on Myriad and get the location of her cousin. Kalex will not help until she reminds it that it was created to serve the great House of El. Kara needs a plan quickly before the world’s entire population is turned into robot-like drones. Superman always goes off planet at the most inconvenient times.
The moment The Man of Steel returns to National City he is taken over by the power of Myriad. Being raised nearly his whole life on Earth has made Clark vulnerable to its influence. Thankfully Kara is not completely alone. Cat Grant has a clear head thanks to a sparkling gift from Maxwell Lord. Can Max be trusted? The only thing we know for sure is that Max can always be trusted to save himself and that he will never want to give up his free will. So he will help as long as it benefits him in the long run.
Kara usually is surrounded by her Super Friends and her sister. But J’onn and Alex are rushing home from Midvale and James and Winn have already succumb to the mind control of Myriad. She has to work with Max for now. His technology is keeping his and Cat’s minds unaffected by the signal that swept across the whole city. J’onn is trying to use his martian mind powers to protect Alex as they enter National City. However a battle with Indigo leaves J’onn hurt and Alex’s mind vulnerable.
Non takes his revenge on Alex for Astra’s death. He tries to force her to use the same sword that cut down his wife to end her sister’s life. Kara can not bring herself to use any of her strength against Alex. She will not raise a hand to hurt the person that made her feel that Earth was her home and she was not alone. Then in comes Eliza to remind Alex that even though Kara is physically strong Alex has the most strength in the family. It was very powerful to watch the depth of the love this family has for each other prevail over mind control in this moment.
Supergirl addresses the city to fill them with hope and overcome Myriad. When it becomes clear to Non that his attempt to get a mindless army was thwarted he takes things to the next level. If he can’t have an enslaved army then he plans to have a dead one. At a higher power this signal does not merely control it will kill! Max suggests a kryptonite bomb but Cat argues the human casualties from the blast will be too much. Kara plans to make the ultimate sacrifice for the planet she now calls home. Flying Fort Rozz so high the only person the blast will hurt is Supergirl herself.

Some blog post comments…
“Did moving to the CW help Supergirl?” – wow this is a TOUGH one! I know on the surface it seems easy to say no but I do think the moved afforded them some things CBS never would have allowed and who’s to say the writing team would have stayed the same if they stayed on the network because really that’s the factor here not the change in network. Had we been able to keep the writing team together I don’t think the move would be given a second thought!
Just playing “what if” here, if the writing team changed still post season one and they still had season two the quality it was (more romance than action) then any little dip CBS might have used that to cancel the show as they weren’t 100% into it anyways as they’re not use to younger audience members so that means we don’t get a season three which means no Sam/Reign and Odette which would be bad.
Also CBS is not known for their queer character rosters so I don’t think we would have seen Alex come out which would have been tragic as that’s a great storyline on this series and the character couldn’t be as awesome as she is if she was still hiding things. For those who ship Max and Alex you might get some of that for drama on CBS but we wouldn’t have our full Alex whom everyone loves so much. So yeah had the writing changed and even if it hadn’t I think there’s some differences we would have seen on CBS if the series stayed there.
On the flip side, had the writing team stayed the same and just moved to the CW I do think we would have seen a lean towards romance plots since that’s what they’re known for on the network but it still would have been written to top quality so again we’re not even giving this question a second look if the writing team doesn’t change and maybe S3 is even better because we still get Odette as Sam/Reign! Then again who knows if post that they do get lazy and we still have a not great season four or a bad season five also.
It’s just really hard to judge how much is network influence when no one says “This is what the network wanted”, but yeah to me it’s more about the fact the writing room changed than the network changed which effected the series. Yes we lost Cat because of the love and Callista wanting to stay in LA but if the writing team had stayed they could have made Lena work as the head and James leading the paper instead of playing tun man in the streets; that’s an actor choice not a network one. And yes some of the staff came over but not everyone and some were pulled out during the season so you had positions change and maybe some people weren’t ready to be lead writers or staff members yet – they’re great workers you want on your team of course but they’re not your leaders.
For as much as I talk about wanting Caitlin Parrish as the showrunner next year because I love her work on the series maybe I love it because she’s good in her position on the series at the time – writer versus showrunner. She could be a great showrunner too so I get you have to give people chances, but you also want to know they’re ready. Just using season one alone I can see why they would ask Robert and Jessica to step up (“Falling” is a really good episode) but were they ready to also deal with network influence is a fair question; maybe they could move to lead writers but not showrunners?
I think long term the move did help the series because even with good ratings CBS wasn’t as committed to it as CW and people always did wonder why it never started there given the Arrowverse, yes there are issues that came from the move but again how much is the actual network change and how much is the shift in the bullpen?
There’s no “It’s complicated” option for the poll ha so I’m going to have to surprisingly maybe say yes. I can’t wait to see the discussions on this! 😀
Thank you for getting the “World’s Finest” duo right this go around! 😀
I will be commenting but not submitting feedback for the season two premiere, it has some decent stuff in it but is not a favorite.
On to the podcast…
“Merida is a real headache isn’t it?” – ??? Well done Justina. 🙂
Lol at John doing the Count. 🙂
Stay safe Monty!
Oh man that would have been a d*ck move by the DEO to never tell Kara about the image, but honestly on brand for season one as legality is not their strong suit. They’re more enforcement than anything. Yes a great question Daryl! 🙂
I wish we would have seen John’s “Midvale II” idea for Alex’s VR episode, that would have been cool!
The “Stargirl” cast DEFINITELY wants a crossover with us so if we have to lose an episode to a crossover for the final season I’ll take this. If they do do the crossover I so want them to cal Kara Powergirl to nod to that part of the character’s life. 🙂 NO to Flash being on!
Nia would be on Legends.
GIVE ME AN ALEX DANVERS SPIN OFF CW!!!
The half joke was not as good John.
“Even heroes need a hope speech sometimes.” – well said Justina. 🙂
??? There’s no pros for Mon as the OTP.
Here’s hoping Melissa and Chyler share their bond forever!
It wouldn’t surprise me if J’onn used his powers to make the bus seem clear.
I took it more as the suit was helping Alex with her abilities and the Kryptonite was the power source which also doubled to weaken Kara not that the rock gave Alex herself powers.
Awe the podcast’s end music feels extra fitting after this recap. 🙂 The emotions!
