Season five is over, but the super summer of fun has just begun. It may be next summer before our high flying heroine takes to the sky again but we would never leave our super friends for that long. Supergirl has now filmed over 100 episodes and we want to know which ones are your favorites? We hope you join us for a trip down memory lane to highlight the shining moments of the last 5 years.
Another topic we plan to explore is a one true pairing for our leading lady. Does she need to be part of a power couple like Barry and Iris? Do you think we have met Kara’s true love or is he a character the writers have yet to invent?
We had a season of superwomen on Sundays now Batwoman is exiting her show. What does Ruby Rose’s exit mean for Batwoman? They have worked hard to build the Kara and Kate friendship. What will happen if Batwoman is no longer Kate?
Crisis made Earth Prime. I thought it would lead to cool interactions between all of our heroes. What if our show airs isolated in the summer making it hard for our stories to intertwine with others? So many questions and a whole year to talk about it with all of you.
We will kick off the summer season with a movie review of the Supergirl movie. You know the one where Helen Slater aka Eliza Danvers takes on the role of the Maid of Steel. While you wait for Wonder Woman 1984 to hit theaters in August 2020 check out Supergirl the movie made in 1984. This is your eye in the sky Green Butterfly. Let’s make this the kick off to one super summer.
Some comments about Batwoman, the TV show, and then Stargirl.
First Batwoman.
It has taken me a long time to piece together the problems with Batwoman the TV show. While the initial problems can be traced to inexperience on the part of the first line showrunners for Mes. Ruby Rose’s early spinal injury; (episode 2) if my time tracks are accurate, the plain truth is that the show has continuously suffered from process problems in how production is managed. Too many people failed to meet due diligence in safety of crew and cast. I mean we were4 three quarters of the way into the season and some clown failed to secure gear and an assistant in the production crew suffered a spinal injury and a major concussion when that cherry picker mounted gear FELL ON HER during a set shoot. Why was the set n0ot shut down and a complete safety and production practices review not performed?
As it was, we can also notice that the work product was substandard.
The writing was uneven, the slue of directors were incompetent in basic tradecraft and in their overall show supervision of crew, far too slack. Editing of episodes was sloppy, Lighting was poor, sound recording was not acceptable, and the overall feel of the show was AMATEUR HOUR. And that is using Supergirl TV production benchmarks to set what “good” is.
Process evidence.
Many TV production companies, when they start up, have problems and minor accidents, BUT one can tell process incompetence right away, when one reads the trades and finds out that insurance was not even properly provided for the case of injury or loss of life of the series star, who commented on live network television, that she was not even sure her private insurance COVERED the cost of her spinal surgery and rehabilitation.
Think about that bit of information. I mean THINK about it.

More on what the Batwoman replacement will walk into:

In my opinion, the only way to approach these changes is to give it a fair trial, say three episodes, but as far as I can tell going in, this is not the correct way to handle the mess the Batwoman show runners created for themselves through their lack of ability, and for which they must take the entire blame.
I cannot blame the actors, especially the former lead who tried her best among these amateurs.

Stargirl is next…
1. I think the writing was “okay” by Arrow-verse standards, but was substandard for this series to date. I think it has more to do with James Robinson, who lost his zing about the time he wrote the ‘Justice League of America’ title for DC in the 2011-2012 timeframe. He never got it back. His MARVEL stuff and TV and Movie and self created and Dynamite stuff since he ‘C and B’-ed on that title has been garbage in my personal opinion. This outing is actually a considerable improvement for him.
2. Rob Hardy, as director, should have been okay, but he was not that good this outing, either, with some badly botched action set pieces.

I do not know what the hello happened to him this time out. He is supposed to be GOOD. His recent work has been rather “mixed”. I liked his Black Lightning and Doom Patrol. Power and All American episodes, he directed, have been utter garbage. This episode has fallen solidly in the middle of the extremes on the scale of his output.
3. This show is targeted at teenagers. Mourning and empathy are not going to be story point sellers with this demographic. It takes adults with empathy who can think about another point of view and another life as being as valuable as their selfish owns to make it work. The writer’s choice and writer’s voice is at work for that audience. Which is odd, because you should aim it all at the persons you try to sell insurance and cornflakes. Young adult college educateds is the target demographic.
4. What is seen as recklessness in the title character, can be naivete and arrogance. I know in the DC character bible, that Sylvester Pemberton, as Skyman / Starman was consistently written as reckless, arrogant and without common sense (Sort of like Batman these days.) and given the radical change that I believe Johns has pastiched onto this version of Courtney Whitmore as her actually being the daughter of that aforewritten “jerk” and that Johns really believes in genetic pre-destination, I am going to suggest that Courtney takes after her “dad”.
5. The Yolanda character, (Yvette Monreal actress), is interesting.

She, Yvette Monreal, showed a moment’s real humanity when she emotes empathy for Braindead Jr. as he mourns his dad. That scene was actually well shot for the reaction effects, point and counterpoint, and shows Rob Hardy at his forte at his directorial best.
6. As to the pacing of the show….
The sense of urgency, that some viewers seems to decry as a Courtney character flaw, her scattershot attempts to derail the ISA is an adult consciousness of time thing. I think that Courtney, as intended to be seen, is not supposed to be mature enough to understand how valuable time is and why it must be spent wisely. Refer to 3. and 4. for the details of why these writing choices were made.
7. World building is not a good thing the CW Arrow-verse does well, and it frankly was not seen in the original Stars and S.T.R.I.P.E. comic book either. Again this is an adult empathy thing that seems to be lacking so far. Full-fledged mature human beings embrace universals. They are not horizon-limited to local time-space me-isms like teenagers. This is why the Pat Dugan character, and his ADULT journey of Blue Valley environmental exploration is so important to the general audience. He is THE ADULT filling in the cosmic background details for the characters in series and for the audience. He is the guide and the in story mentor for characters and audience to fill in the background HE discovers.

The romance of Mary and Luke isn’t surprising as they were building towards it all season one; I’m glad to hear they’re actually going to continue it for better or worse (they’re cute together but are they endgame I don’t know) instead of just dropping it too when they have a major shift. And yes I am side eyeing “Supergirl” right now. That said, I’m still not confident about this new direction…I can’t unsee season one or unknown Kate Kane is Batwoman so while Ryan might be a good character she’s still going to be second place and that negativity is going to affect viewing just as the bummer about all the connected relationships being gone since they’re ran through Kate are going to effect the vibes…I want to be fair and watch the second season to give it a chance but I kind of think I’m out now on “Batwoman”.
I will still enjoy Alice and Mary I feel and I might even watch because there’s nothing else on in the time slot and to keep up with what they’re doing but my passion for “Batwoman” the show has definitely taken a hit the more they talk because I tuned in for Kate and the bonus of seeing the Kara-Kate dynamic get built but now all of that’s gone so it’s like why should I watch; it’s literally going to be a different series but again the problem is I know it’s tied to the original so yeah, I want to be fair but I honestly doubt I’ll be able to because the choice to reboot instead of recast is just so annoying to me.
I still think they’re going to come out and say Starman isn’t Courtney’s father Monty; she wants it to be him so badly that the dramatic thing is for it not to be, the staff just happens to work for her like the other suits work for other characters. Rick will be the only legacy if you will out of the group. I do agree however that Yolanda is so far probably my favorite of the heroes we’ve seen so far because of her intelligence to adventure handling such as stoping Courtney from shutting off the power at the hospital.
Courtney’s relationship with Yolanda has definitely become a favorite of mine and one of the reasons I’m still watching, along with the Courtney-Pat dynamic; I’ll be honest and say while it will probably never happen I’m very much #WildStar (Courtney/Yolanda) and so the shipper element also keeps me entertained right now with the series.
“Stargirl” has been a good filler series I think so far, but I agree it’s not my favorite of the group or even a top pick just yet. I liken it to Legends for me – nothing to really be excited about but it works as additional content. That said I would put “Stargirl”over Legends personally because there’s just more in it for me to watch where as with Legends they don’t have that much…they could but they instead make poor choices with characters so you have the fun of moments but it’s not a must watch.
The pacing of “Stargirl” is definitely slow which can be annoying at times I’ll agree.
Supergirl: the Movie (1984)
When I see what is ”right” in Supergirl, it is Helen Slater, who commits 100% to the character, to the story and to the premise as Christopher Reeve did in the first Superman Film. So with all that great charisma and exuberance going in, where did it all go wrong?
Blame Game.

or his fellow criminal in the cinematic art, Jeannot Szwarc . His work (Jaws II is an example.) is PURE GARBAGE. He was eventually reduced to hack work on Grey’s Anatomy, Bones, Castle, Smallville; et al in outings that were as awful as anything that Derek Simon ever touched.
As for performances that positively reek of the most odious acting that one might cite?
The Big Four paycheck grabbers and chief offenders;
Faye Dunnawaye as the villainess Selena. She was supposed to go for a Morgan le Faye and she delivered Endora instead with a huge side slab of HAMSTER.
Brenda Vaccaro as Bianca was supposed to be a sort of Otis. Instead we get Carrie Fisher on acid.
Peter O’Toole plays Peter O’Toole, so you get Peter O’Toole, that is the prancing fool, who is Peter O’Toole. If they could have zombied in Richard Burton, they could have done no worse a job of casting.
Peter Cook almost stabs at a distaff Merlin, but what do with a Hammer Film RADA washout? He shuffles through his role, grimaces in scene with an actress he hates and he, too, collects his paycheck and runs away from this blot on his now failed career.
How about the story?
I sat down and turned my brain on to actually look at the writing, directing, shot breakdown, AND editing for this disaster. First time in a decade in fact that I looked at it. It was a painful experience. In summary I found the following:
a. Though low budget and decidedly second rate special effects, the story from Argo City in the micro-verse to the aerial ballet was actually working as to acting ensemble, scene shot setups and the story progression. I almost could forgive the table top model effects the multiple image blurs, and the plainly visible flying cables attached to Helen Slater.
b. Where did it start going wrong for me? Faye Dunnawaye shows her mug on camera. I instantly wondered from where the clown crew for ‘Bewitched’ came to support her antics. You can take your choice of set pieces after the ‘picnic’ but the character delineation of “Selena has the hots for some jerk plant jockey.” Is a supreme insult to audience participation in the supposed Omegahedron A-story, that it is at this section of the writing or the direction that one understands that no-one aside from Ms. Slater gives a damn what manure they shovel through the camera.
Specific cases of excrement on film in this movie.
c. I think I really hate the front end shovel loader sequence and the progression through Midvale of that digger with all the clumsily staged car wrecks and that faked up exploding gas station ignited by the downed power lines. I cringed at the punctured water tank drained down onto a GASOLINE fire sparked by LIVE electric power transmission lands.
d. Bumper cars do not work that way.
e. Midvale Preparatory has to have the most ridiculous curriculum vitae and the most stereotypical student body of bullies, nerdettes and priviledged American princesses, that ever disgraced a pop-teenager film. Cliches are the writer’s crutch when the writer does not know the material he tackles and clearly David Odell, the joke writer for Jim Henson’s carpet critters did not understand Otto Binder’s Supergirl.
f. Another cringe moment was the “sexual harassment” scene. How much dumber than turnips did Eddie and Billie have to be? You see the “S” shield in that fictional world and you think it is smart to go skirt sniffing? I can think of easier ways to commit suicide by El. So, obviously the suspension of disbelief and credulity for the entire film took a nosedive.
g. Did I mention I hate “magic” as a plot device or event driver?
Is there any socially or kinematically redeeming features in this pile of offal?
Well…
h. It was nice to see that Supergirl was SMART and capable. Zaltar’s ‘tree’ showed that he was indeed the limited fool Peter O’Toole is so good at playing that type of limited character. When Helen Slater creates the ‘Dragonfly’ and perchance makes it come alive and loses the Omegahedron in the process, there was the genesis of mentor student that could counterpoint the Nigel-Selena Peter Cooke-Faye Dunnawaye pairing. Alas, Mister Odell wants to write a puppet show and not a shootable on film heroine’s journey. If the story as developed had stayed true to Peter O’Toole’s limited range instead of trying to Obiwan him up, during the Phantom Zone sequence of scenes…. And if we traveled with Helen Slater as she outgrows him, then we would have the framework of a GOOD movie.
i. I don’t know how I exactly feel about the “Forbidden Planet” sequence when Helen Slater as Supergirl fights the Shadow for the first time, but I kind of felt it was one of the few good sets in the film.
One final bit of excrement.
Hart Bochner. What a mess. He did one thing ‘right’ and even that he was not too good in his entire stinking film career. He played ‘Byron Henry’ in ‘War and Remembrance’, a plot-boiler Herman Wouk novel turned into a TV melodrama. He was just the right kind of plank to be the submarine hero blockhead needed in scenes for the stinking story line for which he was slotted and cast act.
In the Supergirl (1984) movie, he was hired to play “love object”. Not human being who is worthy of love. He was the “McGuffin number 2” after the omegahedron. You could have hired a piece of wood to play the part and saved money to fix other parts of the movie.
I guess it will be another decade, before I watch this film again.

The plot thickens and curdles. In comics it is called decompression when the story slows way down and time is taken to ‘get to know your villains’. Basically, we get snippets into Shiv, The Gambler and Virtuoso. From what I could see, The Gambler is Willie Nelson well played by Eric Goins. He seems to be the fixer and arranger for the Injustice Society of America goon squad. I enjoyed him. Virtuosa is another villain to enjoy. Hers is a gimmick role, but I can see a lot of potential down the plot stream if Icicle is trying to build a pirate TV station cable channel to mass hypnotize the entire country via the Empire Cable News and Entertainment network. (Wonder who will get to play on that channel?).
Nothing better than a Holloween party to introduce the “Queen of Mean”, ‘Shiv’. I mean the clichés roll past you faster than an Indiana Jones movie boulder, but who cares?
You want to know about the heroes?
Beth Chapel is going to become an Owl Person. Normally I would slot her in as the JSA Bat-gerbil, but her mile a minute delivery of lines and her constant effervescence reminds me a lot of Misfit from the Bat-family.

Beth Chapel will possibly have the following abilities as demonstrated in this episode,
-font of knowledge; access to world library, artificial intelligence and an owl as friend.

Hour-Dude is going to be a laugh riot, if Cameron Gellman can play Dean Martin straight man to Yvette Monreal’s Jerri Lewis.

From the moment we see Virtuosa text Icicle that his hatchet twins, Tigress and Sportsmaster, have murdered another Blue Valley High School football coach, I have been IMPRESSED with how well the villains are written on this show from episode to episode. SOMEONE (Cough, Geoff Johns, cough.) has firm command of the character bibles and makes sure continuity and story outline is followed with an almost J. Michael Strazcynski Babylon 5 precision.
It is not just the writing and the direction, either. This episode builds on the previous markers laid down. I naturally expect lazy Mike Dugan to follow up his knives in the pumpkins antics from Halloween, the week before, to create a lame volcano exhibit for the science fair out of left over Halloween candy at the last possible minute that will earn him a last place trophy at the aforesaid science fair. Wish a certain other Berlanti-verse show had this kind of care addressed to it (Cough, Sterling Gates, Supergirl, cough.)
As we get a leadfoot dose of sadness for the day (Icicle’s wife’s birthday, as Cameron (Icicle Jr. and the evil Jordan Mahkent (Icicle Sr.) lay down those clue markers; you certainly see the Johns touch in the ‘sympathetic villain. You have to have my twisted sense of sick humor to laugh at coach Hank’s sendoff as Sportsmaster and Tigress address his grave and landscape it with a little last minute shovel work.
This development of comedic and sympathetic villains includes family drama-a-rama for Artemis as her parents go out to aid The Gambler as he Skynets Empire Broadcasting. Jordan and Cameron, the two Icicles, do the Chuckee Cheese Birthday Party gaffe cliché, and meanwhile over at the Pat and Courtney show, the big whatchamalou is Courtney getting a lesson in ‘Teenagers Never Listen to Mentors’ as Pat pours forth to her his lessons learned. We guess she will just Have to find out the hard way. This will be Cosmic Staffs coming home to roost when our proto-JSA tries to take down a mere hacker. Trust me, Gerbils, THE GAMBLER is far more dangerous than the two hockey pucks Icicle sent to watch his backside.
The chocolate volcano which was jokingly referred to as breakfast turns out to be dinner. The villagers taste better dead? Okay, if you missed it, the volcano is the visual metaphor for the situation in Blue Valley. (MURPHY, I LOVE THIS SHOW!) Anyway, Barbara, the CVM, informs her husband, Pat, that Courtney is out with her friends doing Courtney Stuff. Cue the 7th Cavalry.
Also, cue the dose of reality obligatory dead security guard body cliché (#2 this episode and number 14 for the series of murders, in series, so far if one keeps count.).
The Sportsmaster and Tigress mop the floor walls and ceiling with our ragtag heroes and buy The Gambler his five minute download window to gain the access codes to Fox News Channel, er… Empire Broadcasting. Remember the “Die Another Day” James Bond plot is still a ‘thing’?
Anyway, it looks like our heroes are going to be squished due to that “Teenagers never listen to Mentors” thingy and then the 7th Cavalry arrives.
The highlight to take away from this whole fight set-piece besides whoever the stunters were, they were Fantastic, is that the camera work and the edits were really good. The intercuts when Brec Bessinger and her stunt double were in there “fighting” Sportsmaster and Tigress (saving Hour Dude’s aspidistra) and her team from annihilation like a good title character should.) were almost flawless with only minor time glitches that were barely noticeable.
Even the coda was on the great side, with the standard “Teenager reads back to Mentor, the lessons learned and now has a leader’s idea of what her Mentor has been trying to teach her. It is a cliché, too, to add to the teenagers’ group collective discovery that the ‘adult in the room’ is far more formidable and wiser than they ever imagined or expected.
Not too funny at that.
Anyway… Add that we have Fate and Lantern unaccounted and still in the wings. And somebody give us Jessica Cruz, with that RING as the Season 1 ender, as a student at Blue Valley High, (Yeah, the HAWKS, too.) and we can now pause to rate this one for acting, writing and directing. 20/20/20 out of 5/5/5. This is only 6 episodes in and we already have hit Babylon 5 levels of greatness. WOW!

Rick will definitely fight Solomon at a point just because of the strength and the revenge plot for his parents!
I’ve never seen “Babylon 5” so I can’t speak to that comparison, but “Stargirl” has been fun. I want to see if it can maintain longer before I bump it up in quality but it has been a good and fun hiatus watch so far!
