“Back From The Future Part Two” brings us back to Winn and his father’s dark cloud over his son’s life. With Supergirl’s help Winn finds the way to bring closure to his father’s story and redeem the name of Toyman. Also, Alex stumbles into Brainy’s meddling into things at the DEO and the Luthor siblings move things more in their direction of non nocere and the defeat of Leviathan. Or so they think… This week we present a quatro of duo’s…
Supergirl and Winn find Toyman’s Closure
It’s karaoke night at Al’s and Winn, who we learn is Computer Lad in the Legion, has put down 42 pot stickers already – hey, they don’t have these in the 31st Century, don’t hate – William comes through the door, because Kara couldn’t not invite him after Game Night (duhhhhhhhhh). They duo on the band Toto’s “Africa,” which hopefully shall never be spoken of again. A 9-1-1 comes to Alex about a situation at the DEO so she, J’onn, and Winn go to check it out. Leaving Kara and William. Together. (Insert head smack…here) Winn comes running back calling for Super-Kara, “she’s super,” he says to William. “Sure,” is William’s reply. BWAH! An emergency has come up with her DeeeeeeEeee Oooooold Grandmother and Alex needs her now. Drones are wreaking havoc around the office and Brainy is already engaged in battle as the trio arrives and puts a stop to the drones’ fun. Brainy starts putting together that (back in Part One) Evil Winn put himself into the laptop that the DEO confiscated and now he’s working his way into their system with the goal to get out into the world wide web and do some real damage. It turns out that the code to accomplish all of this was written by Winn and his father was really excited about the work and tried to take the idea for himself. The only option is to find the server where Evil Winn is hanging out and fry it. Supergirl and Winn try to figure it out and come across Winn’s father (the OG) Toyman who says he wants to help them and Winn is…doubtful. When Winn can’t get the kill code to be accepted by the server he figures out that he can also enter the digital space and kill the code from the inside, because he’s Computer Lad. Along the way Winn and Supergirl talk about the possibility of her relationship with William and he tells her the story of why he wrote the code that they’re now trying to stop. Winn goes into the Tron-world and finds the space where he needs to find the code. The space is an empty DEO. He also finds his father trapped in the conference room. Evil Winn and Winn battle while Dad says he can help and he wants to because Evil Winn is way beyond anything he ever wanted to do. Winn eventually trusts him. He traps evil Winn and our Winn deletes the code, which deletes both Toyman Dad and Toyman Evil Winn. In the aftermath Winn decides to change his Legion title to Toyman to honor the sacrifice of his father and he and Supergirl leave each other with him giving her the advice she needs as far as future relationships. Winn takes off in his Legion ship.
Brainy and the Alex Danvers Problem
Lex tells Brainy that he’s going to have to deal with the Alex Danvers problem. Brainy isn’t quite sure what he’s referring to but he does deactivate her access to the spyware that she is using to keep track of what Lex is doing around the DEO. She discovers it and confronts Brainy saying that ever since he’s become disinhibited that it seems like he’s hiding something. He admits his subterfuge with her equipment and explains that he is shielding her from Lex and what he might do. She accepts the explanation and lets it go. Winn also confronts Brainy about Lex’s plan and Brainy explains that while he has to work with Lex for the future that he is still working for the good of the team. Finally, Lex asks Brainy to copy Toyman’s code so that Lex can use it as an advantage against Leviathan. Alex and the DEO staff are working to deactivate all of the smart weapons that Toyman can use against them and has a rough conversation with Lex about the situation. She finds Lex-O Suits at the DEO and they have to fight them to keep Toyman from using them to escape the DEO lockdown. After all is said and done Alex decides that she has to leave the DEO because of Lex. Brainy hands over the code to Lex and tells him that the Alex problem has been solved. Lex promotes Brainy to Director Querl Dox of the DEO.
The Luthor Siblings Get Their Groove
Virtual Andrea Rojas sits down on a virtual chair at a virtual table to eat a virtual lobster. And she goes into anaphylactic shock. She wakes up and there is Kelly Olsen – Oh, hi Kelly! It seems there’s a problem with the bio-interface for the new fangled Obsidian North Lenses 2.75 model that causes the body to react in a toxic type fashion. Just in time Lena Luthor is at Andrea’s office ready to assist in making the new generation lenses less toxic. Andrea says she’d hate to put their friendship at risk again so the answer is no, thank you. Lex gets the background info he needs on Gemma Cooper and stalks her at a local restaurant and proposes that they get in bed together – business wise, of course. He sells her that he’s got the people and the tech help that Obsidian needs but Andrea stands in the way. Gemma, as Chairman of the Board, goes to Andrea and shames her into taking Lena’s help. Lex also asks Lena if he can help with her project. She says she doesn’t need anyone murdered and he firmly states that he has lots of other skills! She is shocked by his caring about feelings and asking for permission and other basic humanity type things. It’s truly a new world, he says. Andrea calls Lena and gives in. Lena later talks with Lex and asks what he did to make Andrea come on board and he truthfully says that he brought it up to Gemma who applied the appropriate pressure. We see Gamemnae and Margot sitting together and G tells M to let “The Anointed One” that the Authors are right where Leviathan wants them.
Tis Better Not To Have Lied and Loved than Never To Have Loved At All…
William asks out Kara on a date after the karaoke that shall never again be referenced. Without answering him she has to lie about her DeeeeeeEeee Oooooold Grandmother to leave the bar. She later tells Winn that because her friendship with Lena blew up because of the deception about her identity there’s no way that she’s starting a relationship based on lies. Winn’s like “why are we talking about a relationship? Let’s just start with a date and see if it’s something you want to even pursue. Baby steps, baby steps.” Later at CatCo she approaches William probably to say yes to a date but before she can say anything he pulls out a puzzle he bought for sick Grandma and Kara nervously says she just doesn’t feel that way about him. She and Alex commiserate on her couch that she flubbed it and there’s a knock on her door. Who’s there? Mr. Mxyzptlk!
Conclusion
There are times when you get back together with a friend that you haven’t seen in years and you pick right back up where you are just like you never left. That was Winn and Super-Kara in this episode. Winn knows Kara and Supergirl in ways that others simply do not and the writers and director were able to bring us back into that space with them so comfortable with each other once again. They were also able to build upon Winn’s character in a short amount of time and continue to advance him and have him grow in his appreciation for what he was able to resolve and in his appreciation for all that he now has. I thoroughly enjoyed the time that we got to spend with him and am glad he will also be back for the very special 100th episode next week. I’m frankly surprised at the change of having Alex leave the DEO and am finding her character writing lacking in this otherwise solid season. Kara and William have me rolling my eyes so far in the back of my head that I’m in fear of serious injury. I can’t wait to celebrate the big 100 next week and see what Mr. Mxy has in store for our Supergirl and us!

Some blog post comments…
I’m going to assume from now on until the spinoff Alex is never going to be fully the DEO head because again 5 years we waited and she was it for like a minute! ?I can just see season 10 now where they say she’s head again but really someone is just peaking over her shoulder in case she needs the extra help. Ugh.
“I’m frankly surprised at the change of having Alex leave the DEO and am finding her character writing lacking in this otherwise solid season.” – SO MAD about that first part! If she didn’t leave when J’onn went non lethal why would she leave now, it just makes no sense to the character! Alex would put a bullet in Lex in a back alley and face the consequences before she’d just quit something like the DEO. As for the “solid season” I have to hardcore disagree, this is arguably the worst season so far; William and Kara are ridiculous as a potential pairing, Alex is a shell of her former self floating from one plot to the next with no real plot commitment, who’s J’onn, where’s Lena, and too much time spent on hyping up Crisis which is a mixed bag outcome. There’s some good points don’t get me wrong but this season gives season 2 a run for it’s money on worst season and that season has Guardian and Mon so you know it’s bad.
“Kara and William have me rolling my eyes so far in the back of my head that I’m in fear of serious injury.” – same; just let it go writers, this wouldn’t be the first relationship you hyped up then dropped as fast as it came (cough Karolsen/Danolsen the first one cough)…this one actually deserves the hot drop too, it’s that bad! Again I’d rather watch Mon and Kara fight as sad as that is than this because at least then I’d care about something instead of being so bored watching the scene! Hint: if I say I’d rather watch Mon on “Supergirl” than another plot you know that plot is bad.
“Will Leviathan Outsmart The Luthors?” – Lena is part of the Luthors so no.
On to the podcast…
If we’re getting an Alex action figure I vote we go with the kryptonite suit from season one and it light up on the kryptonite spots because that look is so iconic for Alex! Bonus points for a kryptonite sword accessory!
The future literally changed Justina so Winn should have changed; you can’t just have him come back as half of things never happened but the other did – either he changed or he doesn’t because at that point history changed and if you say this was always part of the Legion’s history then why didn’t they tell Kara about it in S3 so she could stop it sooner? The whole point is to stop Anti Monitor yes so we could have taken that from 5 episodes down to like 2 if they had spoken up. This just makes Crisis and it’s fallout feel like plot for the sake of plot because if they cared about continuity so much would be different with some characters; this is why I say Crisis is a “cool factor” not a legit story point, yes they’re having fallout from it but it doesn’t make sense…there’s too much handwaving involved in plots now to make the pieces fit together and I don’t like that.
Mon in the 100th episode – boo! Eliza Danvers Prime better be in the episode! Cat would be awesome but she’s not coming back unless they recast. 🙁 “What if Mon and William are in the same scene?” – *long pause* ? *walks away from this podcast episode*
*returning two hours later and skipping Justina’s insane question ;p*
I’ll save my money to see “Birds Of Prey” again! 🙂
Skip it John, it’s okay to skip William – you aren’t missing anything. 🙂
I agree Jon Cryer as Lex performance wise is great; Lex himself is not a good person.
I think Acroda is still in play we just haven’t seen her yet; as for why things stayed the same overall – it’s because our series wasn’t massively invested in Crisis like “Arrow” or “Flash”. It’s the same if you watch “Batwoman”, it’s where it was pre Crisis. Legends is only dealing with fallout because it’s starting post Crisis for the season, Barry was all set to die in Crisis so he’s having to readjust to life, and Oliver straight up died so that’s going to effect “Arrow”.
We don’t have to talk about William/Kara; if we don’t talk about it maybe it will go away. 🙂
Green Butterfly has a science degree…does that make her Dr. Butterfly? 🙂
#LenaIsGood!
There’s no need to rush kids John, let Alex be in the field; if they keep her at the base I am going to be so disappointed because that feels like such a hold on her character. While Alex is in scenes I sadly agree with John, they’ve done really nothing with her; it’s been how long since we’ve seen movement on her and Kelly which makes that relationship feel Halle and the moment she starts to have a good solo plot with taking shots at Lex they put her somewhere else…I’m missing the pre-Lex seasons. Give me be monster of the week as it were if it means the show being more like S1 except Alex is the DEO head because I feel if anything we’ll see a repeat of that dynamic where she’s J’onn’s junior officer but the location has changed. It’s making me sad just thinking about it all.
You want Alex as a parent – Sam Arias; you get Ruby who’s old enough to worry but not young enough to seem annoying hopefully. You can be kick butt and a mom – see Lyla Diggle! Also Sam Arias. 🙂
“And we’re better off!” – wow, but fair John given they screwed up James after season one.
Great feedback Darryl!
A few scenes of William and Kara is too much Justina. Ha.
Thomas Lennon aka Lt. Dangle is going to be good as Mxy I think. 🙂
Aaron, my feeling of a solid season overall is based on my most recent memories of Season 4 which was ruined in my view by the Children of Liberty and missed opportunities of resolving the Red Daughter plots. So, in comparison, this Season looks like rainbows and unicorns. 🙂
I used to think Season 3 was bad until I saw the 1st half of Season 4. The Children of Liberty and Ben Lockwood were just awful. My opinion of Season 3 then increased. The alien problem was raised in Season 4 but the show never adequately addressed the issue. My least favorite episode ever was Season 4’s Man of Steel episode in which Lockwood’s back story featured heavily. I could care less about him.The Alex mindwipe was ill-conceived, awful to endure, and lasted too long as well. And now Alex has quit the DEO anyway.!? What is she going to do for income? But I have an overall high opinion of Season 4 only because of Red Daughter in the House of L and Red Dawn, and the Red Daughter scenes in the Quest for Peace, and of course the Kara and Alex relationship in these three episodes.
I’m liking Season 5 and I’m looking forward to the 100th episode, Melissa Benoist’s directorial debut in episode 17 and David Harewood’s third time in the director’s chair in episode 19.
Honestly, John I think I’m just use to half done seasons now so it’s just which has the least stuff I enjoy as to who’s worse.
Season 2 had way too much Mon so I only liked half the season, Lena and Alex’s coming out were the highlights and I liked Maggie so it wasn’t a total wash but close.
Season 3 could have been amazing had it focused on Sam/Reign but sadly again too much Mon.
Season 4 was pretty crap because of Agent Liberty, but Red Daughter was good so it had one interesting element at least and Lex was decent at times.
Season 5 by comparison has what good about it? Andrea? Kelly…she doesn’t get screen time really. There’s just not a lot to be excited by this year for me. To it’s credit, by the count, it would be tied with season 3 for worst season but Sam is that awesome so yeah I’m kind of putting season 5 as my least favorite season so far. Maybe it’ll get better in the second half but for now I’m feeling it’s my least enjoyable season.
“The alien problem was raised in Season 4 but the show never adequately addressed the issue.” – again this sadly isn’t new Leslie; again see how hyped Reign was and what what a half done plot it ended up being on the show. You have how intriguing Sam could have been learning to live with Reign and is she wrong or not for not wanting to use her powers potentially but we don’t see that intriguing character plot. This seems to be a new approach for shows thing as many shows have build ups without much pay off.
“What is she going to do for income?” – I assume J’onn will be giving her something and I’m sure the DEO paid well, you’ve seen Alex’s massive bed. Ha.
