Talking Through Skidmark
This content has been moved and can now be found here.
On this episode 55 of Fear the Walking Dead Talk Through, Brian and Kyle are joined again by our special guest co-host Mark from The Walking Dead Talk Through, as we talk through Fear the Walking Dead Season 5 Episode 4, which is titled, Skidmark. This was written by Samir Mehta, his first episode on this show, and directed by Tara Nicole Weyr, making her second stint as a director on this show. She previously directed S4E11 The Code.
We have more feedback for last week’s episode… S5E3 coverage starts at 20:57…
Before we get into this week’s episode, we have to share more feedback we received for last week’s episode, S5E3 Humbug’s Gulch. Discussion on this week’s episode starts at 20 minutes and 57 seconds into the podcast.
A cat that listens to you!
We get a good cold open this episode, with Daniel showing how he uses Skidmark as a diversionary tactic. That little guy seems to know how to get the zombies’ attention and smart enough to know not to let them get too close. I thought this was a great use of the cat, though some would say most cats don’t take commands. However, they do exist. One of my cats, Tazz, reminds me of Skidmark. He listens to commands and usually follows them. We also see Daniel be The Pied Piper of walkers again, something he did in S1E6 The Good Man.
More of those kids!!! Quick, get to the choppa!
We see that there are more than just Dylan, Max, and Annie that are around. There are more kids, lots more. What happened that made them so scared of grown-ups? Then, we see that symbol we saw when Althea was taken, and We see the helicopter again, and it’s pretty clear this is from the same group… you know, the A or B group… that took away Rick and Jadis in the helicopter on TWD. It seems we’ll get to know more about this group next episode.
No, get to the plane, I mean walker chopper!
This episode had a unique way to take care of walkers… the plane propellers. That was a pretty cool stunt, helping to save Daniel and at least a truce be called between Daniel and Strand. I thought the scenes with Daniel and Charlie were nice, too. Could he become a foster father for her?
FTWD Ratings are down to a new low…
This week, FTWD ratings sunk to a new low in the 18-49 demographic. S5E4 Skidmark got a 0.45 in the 18-49 demographic with 1.655 million viewers,ย the lowest since S4E12 Weak, down from the last week’s 0.54 and 1.756 million viewers. Again, there was no Talking Dead this week so no ratings for it.
That’s it for Skidmark!
Skidmark didn’t wow us. We liked it, but no one loved it. I’d give this episode a 7 on the whole; it’s not better than the premiere episode for me but it’s close behind for this season.
“I thought the scenes with Daniel and Charlie were nice, too. Could he become a foster father for her?” – I think he’s forever burned by what happened to Ofelia to use the term father but mentor/mentee why not.
I’m actually surprised to hear this episode was the lowest rated so far as I figured a Daniel promoted episode would be high given most fans like him. I guess it just goes to show the only way to score ratings for sure with an original is to have it be a Clark…bring Madison on back show! ๐
On to the podcast…
To answer your question Brian, it wasn’t just Madison as to why I watch, Madison is certainly why I stayed with the series because oh my gosh Kim Dickens does ambiguity better than I’ve ever seen anyone do it – you don’t know if Madison is going to be your friend, your killer, or your friend before becoming your killer! The reasons I skipped TWD are because 1) I had my zombie franchise with the “Resident Evil” movies, 2) it was already multiple seasons into its run by the time I might have jumped in and it has a long history of conflicting schedules with other shows I watch so of course I’m going to watch what I’m already into instead of TWD, and 3) the promos just didn’t grab me personally so I never felt the compulsion to watch. The reason I got into FEAR is because of Alycia and hearing all the hype that surrounded her and what happened on “The 100”, that fallout was SO FEAR’s gain and one of the main reasons I think they have to keep her on as long as they can because those fans will riot if anything happens to Alicia; but I did actually stay for Madison because again Kim just did her SO well and I had to tune in each week to see how far Madison would go. Fear was also really unique in that it was about this family in the apocalypse and not just a family but a family of step kids and parents and all that came with it, it wasn’t just another round of “survive until the end” so it felt more unique to the genre. I know TWD has Carl and Rick but there’s only so much drama you get from that compared to the Clarks who have one on one child-parent stuff as well as family stuff on top of step parent stuff…there was just more to get into with the show for me. By the time S1 and certainly S2 rolled around I was hearing how TWD fans felt plots were just repeating or weren’t living up to the build up of the season so I’ve just never had the desire to watch the original series; eventually when the shows merge I may have to depending on who’s around from FEAR but until then I’m good not watching TWD.
Essay answers are all I do. ๐
#TeamRescueDaveEricksonFromDevelopmentHellSoHeCanComeBackAndRescueFearFromThisTakeover! Also #TeamBringBackMadison!!!
I REALLY hope Althea doesn’t die over those stories!
“Where’s Charlie?” – no one cares; I won’t say no one…just very few.
I have such mixed feelings about Charlie because on the one hand Alexa Nisenson, the actress playing her, is doing a really good job with the character but on the other Charlie was the tool that essentially killed Madison so go away Charlie!
Cats will never be the new thing, team dog! ????โ????
“It’s very predictable.” – well said!
I would say the plane is a way to pass through the radiation zone faster but they didn’t even know about that until the season opener so; I feel the plane is just to up the action right now, like they haven’t crashed that yet so check it off the list now. I’m sure they’ll manufacture a reason later in the season but I wouldn’t bet money that was the plan all along with these writers.
LOL to “Why do you need the plane? Because we had it before. Why did you have it before? Because we needed it. Ok but why did you need it? Because it’s cool! Well stop doing that!”!
Daniel says “inherited” but it’s Daniel so think take it more.
Al met Abraham based on teases from her tapes so why not Daniel?
Skidmark is better than Goose. ๐ I wonder if Skidmark is Goose?!
I think Daniel could have seen Ofelia before she died but it wouldn’t have been long and he couldn’t have saved her which I think is what Daniel really desired, he thinks if they were faster maybe he could have saved her but yeah in the grand scheme nothing was going to change no matter what Strand did/said. Daniel may have gotten a few moments with her but it would she be conscious to hear whatever he said I don’t know. I totally get Daniel being angry with Victor but I don’t think anything would have changed grand scheme; it sucks for poor Daniel.
