On this episode 54 of Fear the Walking Dead Talk Through, Brian and Kyle are joined again by our special guest co-host Mark from The Walking Dead Talk Through, as we talk through Fear the Walking Dead Season 5 Episode 3, which is titled, Humbug’s Gulch. This was written by Ashley Cardiff, her first episode on this show, and directed by Colman Domingo, who plays Strand on the show, and is making his second stint as a director on this show. He previously directed S4E12 Weak.

Before we get into this week’s episode, we have to share more feedback we received for last week’s episode, S5E2 The Hurt That Will Happen. Discussion on this week’s episode starts at 27 minutes and 30 seconds into the podcast.
Spaghetti western walkers!!!
We see this episode lean into the backstory of John, as a former trick shooter at a western theme park. The vibe of this episode, especially the music and look, was reminiscent of the old spaghetti westerns of the 1960s. I thought it perfectly fit in with the Texas motif, and I enjoyed it. Some found the San Antonio Split beyond their suspension of disbelief, but I thought they sold it well by saying it was only the second time John had been able to successfully split a bullet to two targets. Crazy, yes, but I bought it.
Dwight!?!?
We had already been told by the showrunners that Dwight was going to be crossing over to Fear from the main show, and I was skeptical as to the believability of this crossover, and not sure I wanted him on the show. However, now that it’s upon us, I thought it was very well done. I wasn’t always receptive to Dwight’s character and story, but I found myself very drawn to his character’s story, heartbroken that he hadn’t found Sherry yet and how that had led to desperation and anguish. Having him found by John and June, the two characters who could best sympathize with his story, was appropriate and very fitting. And he fits! He’s a character that has a lot to atone to and is on his own redemption arc. He’s also a character that needs the group’s help. So, if he can find Sherry, and help others, he’s a perfect fit for this completely different show from two years ago.
A paper trail…
Some people complained about the clues Sherry left behind for Dwight. There was some confusion as to how he thought the car John and June were driving was the same car that he was looking for that Sherry had been driving, and where the registration was. If you recall way back in Season 7 of The Walking Dead, Sherry left Dwight a note that told him where she was going, a cottage they stayed before the apocalypse. When he left at the end of S8E16, he went there and found another note for him that said Honeymoon. We can assume that there was a note for him there, and then another, and probably another. Whether it was in her previous car or where she was staying, Sherry took another car and left behind the registration with another note on the back. Apparently, this car had the same year, make, model and color of the car on the registration, but after comparing the registration VIN with the VIN on the car itself, John was able to determine this was not the correct vehicle, despite matching otherwise.
Those kids!!!
It seems the showrunners are using deceptive kids as a plot point again this season. That feels a little overused. So, are we correct to assume that the kids are responsible for the walkers tied up by their guts? What about the severed zombie heads? Did they do those, too? I’m not sure I like this part of the story since it’s so similar to Charlie last season, but I will reserve final judgment.
FTWD Ratings are up!!!
This week, FTWD ratings were higher than last week, but not drastically so. S5E3 Humbug’s Gulch got a 0.54 in the 18-49 demographic with 1.756 million viewers, up from the last week’s 0.51 and 1.687 million viewers. Again, there was no Talking Dead this week so no ratings for it.

This was a really good bottle episode for this week I thought; I still can’t rate it higher than the premiere because I am BEYOND tired of Morgan telling Alicia what to do and she does it even though you have another character literally right there who could have said not to give up just as easily! It was a little better than last week’s I felt though so I’d give this a 6.5 maybe. As always, still too much Morgan in this series for me to rate it too high.

“Some found the San Antonio Split beyond their suspension of disbelief” – to be fair the odds of that being pulled off are impossible even if you’re the best of shots because one you have to split the bullet perfectly and they don’t really do that so to get a piece to break off enough to hit each – suspect. Also you have to deal with accuracy even if you split it perfectly so there’s just a lot against that shot HOWEVER it is still 10x more believable that shot happened than I buy gas goes bad because it touched dirt. *insert middle finger to S4 here*
As someone who only cared to watch FEAR I of course was, and still am to a degree, very opposed to yet another TWD member coming on to the series, seriously writers just merge already as you’re half way there anyways, but I have to say knowing nothing about Dwight I still found him more enjoyable in this one episode than I’ve ever found Morgan! I thought it was kind of lazy they had him shoot at John and June to get his character introduced but they’ve done worse on this series so by his story end this episode I could deal with it. Being a TWD member he brings up my takeover rage but he wasn’t trying to force concepts on our characters and he responded in organic ways so again I can take him more than Morgan so far; I’d still rather go back to the early years and watch our FEAR characters interact with Al, John, June and maybe a return Daniel still than to have TWD cast keep coming over…if that’s going to continue can we at least get someone I might care about on like that Michonne woman, she seems awesome in promos?
“So, are we correct to assume that the kids are responsible for the walkers tied up by their guts?” – it certainly seems like that’s what they want us to take from that last scene to which I ask how are they pulling that off – you may get one zombie tied to a pole but to make that line…eventually your odds of getting bit go up I would think. I’m not sure anyone could pull it off in a two person team much less kids. Do they hold them down and disembowl them before they get to the line or do they do it there because again the more you mess with them the more you’re asking to get bit. Also it is SO a repeat of Charlie except no fan favorite has died yet. Is it a good plan by the kids yes, am I excited by the repeat vibes it’s giving me, no.
Given they’ve associated the cat with Daniel I feel next week will have higher ratings because people will tune in hoping to see a good dose of him but we’ll see.

Thanks for the Luciana whereabouts corrections; I totally mixed up S2B’s start and the actual S2 start so she’s later than what I thought; I could still let her honorable mention pass as an OG because S1 is only 6 episodes so if someone wants to say she is I’m fine with it but for me the only OGs still there weekly are Strand and Alicia because Daniel is in and out so again he’s more recurring now that weekly to me. Also I don’t know who I took for Luciana then because I thought she was in the scene where they all meet back up and Daniel finds out Ofelia died so thanks for that correction also!
Ugh to know what Dave had planned for S4…why did they change showrunners again?! We definitely would have gotten a whole dam story and how they found each other; I wonder if it would have been a repeat of S2B but just with Madison as the focus trying to make it alone as she searches for everyone and like every 5th episode at least we find a character for two until they’re reunited? I MISS YOU OLD SHOW!!!
I’m all for doing a romance in the show, Alicia/Althea looking at you, but I hope they keep them more like John/June at least because while they are obsessed with each other they still function as individuals more than Luciana got; maybe the writers learned from Nick/Luciana that fans wanted more than just a love interest plot for some so June is reaping the benefits of having a deep love but also still being her own person when the moments come? Ideally I’d want to see a couple go more the Travis/Madison route where they have love but they still get a decent amount of screen time for solo plots and they mingle with other characters but if John/June is all we get it’s still a step up from Luciana just being the girlfriend because again at least June has that medical trait to play on, when is the last time Luciana looked at a map or gave approach advice? I actually fist pumped a bit this week when they showed her marking on the map and talking coordinates with characters!
I’m fine with John and June having like 60% of their time together because they’re all in love and they just reunited but still like 40% AT LEAST every other episode can we have them talk to another character in the group please so you don’t get stale combinations and this group feels like a unit instead of group A assisting group B this week if one does go with say Strand on something while another goes with Al to do another thing? Remember couples are made of two individuals so let’s not forget that side too. 🙂
“Weak” is probably the best episode of S4 in part because of Colman’s visuals, it’s also just a good episode for the Al and June stuff; if I watched something from S4 it would be that episode.

Let’s not forget the ultimate suspension of disbelief – Al has the never dying battery pack for her stuff because she shoots constantly!
That was some bull that Alicia and Luciana didn’t move the nail board for Morgan or anyone coming through!
Is Al going to be the new “Where’s Ofelia?”, if so can we have the reverse of that plot please and she lives in the end?!
Missed opportunity you didn’t play “Sherry” again as your outro this week! 🙂
