“Sixteen Candles” is John Hughes’ feature debut, but you can definitely see his style shining through. Unusually, it also focuses on a female main character, whereas his later teen films would feature male characters or ensemble casts. This means that Cory hasn’t seen this as much but Karen has a bit more experience with it. Can they meet eye to eye on this 80s coming of age classic or will it fall flat on its face like Donger on the front lawn?
Samantha’s life is going downhill fast. The sixteen-year-old has a crush on the most popular boy in school, and the geekiest boy in school has a crush on her. Her sister’s getting married, and with all the excitement the rest of her family forgets her birthday! Add all this to a pair of horrendously embarrassing grandparents, a foreign exchange student named Long Duk Dong, and we have the makings of a hilarious journey into young womanhood.
