The Sandbox Episode – Meet the New Boss Review
Although Meet the New Boss as an episode is mostly about connecting Ghost Rider to the disembodied spirits as well as Robbie Reyes to Daisy Johnson, the title of course refers to the new director who has a few surprises up his sleeve as well! And let’s not forget the unknown fate of the normally nigh-invulnerable Melinda May!
Join us for show news, commentary and analysis for Meet the New Boss, Faith’s CoulSass moments, and our listener feedback segment! This week we talk about Fitz’s anger at Daisy, Mack’s realization of Yoyo’s involvement, the Director’s secret powers, Daisy’s death wish, and why Coulson isn’t in charge of SHIELD anymore.

Possible Identity of the New Director
I’m guessing it’s because of the Presidential debate next week the reason the show is off; that’s an important reason to break but still it’s frustrating to see them go on break when it literally just returned.
Robbie Reyes was good in this episode, hopefully that vibe will continue through the season; I agree, the new director is interesting. Maybe the visions signify seeing the darkness in yourself reflected back to you – May has always carried a weight due to the Calvary incident and everyone she saw the visions on were a member of her team so it’s linking to them…maybe the dad at the start is guilty of something that affected families thus he saw the vision on his kid? The criminals saw it on each other because they affect other criminals. Or it could just be a vision for the sake of showing this person is possessed rather than just angry or scared.
“I can do May.” – who wouldn’t want to be with Melinda May. 🙂 I personally found Fitz saying Daisy couldn’t brood to be really hypocritical because of his season two actions with Simmons…that’s all he did basically S2 to the point he guilted her into a date, never going to buy that romance of course, and he was all for a suicide mission because of brooding…and also he froze Jemma out at times without really letting her explain her side of things because of his anger and wanting to punish her so who was he to say anything about Daisy; if anything Fitz should have been the most understanding and supportive of Daisy wanting to take time for herself because he did the same thing. That plane scene with Mack and Fitz was not a good scene to me character wise and only served to annoying me once more with them. Maybe it’s because I’m still highly upset with both Fitz and Mack over their actions in S2 regarding Jemma but that back and forth on the plan mostly just annoyed me and turned me off of them once again.
Daisy will never be irredeemable to Coulson or Jemma. 🙂 I think Robbie took the picture just so S.H.I..E.L.D. and Daisy couldn’t get it and use it to get information about the group…it makes tracking them easier on him if they’re not in the way and he crumpled it so as not to draw possible attention to the act, it just looks like he’s ripping something off the wall out of frustration rather than trying to secret something out. I think Hugo’s wife is not like them.
I vote for “Brightly Lit” in the CoulSass poll.
Given his history of reactions to similar situations I think Mack will say something to Elena next time they meet, it’d be out of character for him not to; it may even be something that breaks them up so they don’t have to explain her absence as much and why Mack isn’t spending time with her on his off days. Hopefully it won’t take Elena out of rotation the entire season because she has fun moments but it’ll be an easy explanation for them should people wonder where she is in certain situations. The director slamming May’s head against the wall is his shadiest moment to me, he could have easily put her in a sleeper hold or just punched her to knock her down so they could pile on…his extreme force does play to Dave’s comments of him maybe not being the nicest guy. I don’t mind the rest of the things he did in this episode, Phil doesn’t have the right clearance because he gave the job up as Mike pointed out in this episode so that was fair, but that was a “Hey now.” moment; I hope the director is a good guy they just think is bad, but that head slam wasn’t a plus for him unless they’re going to say he’s still learning his strength so he didn’t mean to slam her that hard…we’ll see. Regarding midseason breaks: “Doesn’t every show do one now?” – sadly accurate Dave; it’s like “You JUST came back, why are taking a break?!”! It’s really annoying when it happens after episodes where they just broke for other reasons.
I have to say part of me wanted to hear Mike say “If you suspect something, say something!” in response to Dave’s sign off because “You trust me right?” is usually followed by “Famous last words.” and it just would have tied those two bits together. Still another good sign-off and podcast. Even though you just returned I hope you’ll enjoy the break. 🙂
