The Sandbox Episode 56 – Emancipation Review
Both sides attempt to perpetrate a con, but it’s SHIELD that ends up on top in this week’s Agents of SHIELD, Emancipation. How will Daisy cope with her withdrawal? What will happen with Hive? Can they stop the terragen bomb in time? And who the heck is on that Quinjet?
Join us for show news, commentary and analysis for Emancipation, Faith’s CoulSass moments, and our listener feedback segment! This week we talk about the Civil War tie-ins, Mack’s crisis of faith, Elena’s continued impressiveness, Lash’s unexpected role, and Talbot’s and Coulson’s amazing banter.

Emotional scars always take longer to heal. I hope something breaks up Fitzsimmons romantically; I still don’t buy this as an organic growth plot with Jemma Simmons. I would also like less of the romance because it feels like Jemma has been taking a backseat overall to Fitz; yes she has moments, but compared to him their screen time is hardly equal and again you had him trying to convince Radcliff in the previous episode to help them when that should have been Jemma given they both are biological doctors unlike Fitz who’s engineering. Even when they’re in scenes together it feels like the focus is mostly on him; a Fitzsimmons romance is just not a good thing for Jemma in my opinion. Even in this episode we see Fitz saying “I wish Mack was here.” when working with Simmons on the servers, but we have yet to hear Simmons ever say “I wish Lincoln was here.” when Fitz’s helping her in the lab – again it feels really unbalanced now that they’re together. I miss season two when they both had a good amount of plot as individuals.
I like Mack/Elena, but the problem with their romance is it’s all off screen so it’s hard to invest in it. Elena is cool. I vote for “write in” in the CoulSass poll and the write in is – “You want to see my x-rays? I’ll put them in a frame for you.”.
No kind of about the death, the promos straight out say “Someone will die.” so if it is Daisy in the jet then it’s not her because I highly doubt they’ll kill her, but if it’s someone other than her or Coulson, and maybe May, then that could be how they die. It would be cool to see one last hand off of the necklace and Daisy get it so you really don’t know who will in the finale. It could be Hive and the team is fine because how is Brett going to transfer characters if Hive dies? It would be sad to see him go, but Ward and his body has been written into a corner now kind of. A lot of possibilities still.
Some blog post comments…
Shout out Taltos for the Peggy Carter screen grab! I’m totally wondering who her kids are and thinking it would be neat to see them on “Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.” along with Maria Hill because – come back to us Maria! Also boo they cancelled “Agent Carter”!
Thanks for the comments, Aaron! I have to agree with your desire to see more Fitz and Simmons in individual plots. I’m a FitzSimmons shipper, but those two haven’t had enough to do since Maveth.
Again I would agrue Fitz has had more plot between the two, screen time wise they might be close to equal but I still feel Jemma has had less screen time than him, where as even though Jemma is in scenes it feels like she’s more Fitz’s girlfriend Jemma who just happens to work at SHIELD also because she hasn’t had a plot since “Maveth”…being Fitz girlfriend has kind of been her plot which is just depressing as a Simmons fan.
Even as a Skimmons fan I wouldn’t want to see the pairing as just the pairing you know? These people are individuals just as much as they’re a pairing so for one part of the couple to be just the girlfriend/boyfriend it’s sad. Jemma is a great character and it’s just sad to see her being sidelined like this; Fitz and Simmons already don’t get as much screen time as other characters so to limit her even more again had just been SUPER frustrating to see this season.
Also frustrating to see, the limited May moments; it seriously felt like she wasn’t even in some episodes this season she was basically just in scenes to say she was there. Hopefully we’ll see Jemma and May getting to do more next season because it’s been a bust so far regarding them again compared to other characters. I know they’ve had moments but not enough in my opinion.
