The Sandbox Episode 52 – Paradise Lost Review
We had a great unfolding of Malick’s vision in this week’s Agents of SHIELD episode, which had the ever-so-symbolic title, Paradise Lost. With the back story that is revealed between Gideon and his brother, Nate, it’s surprising that Hive stuck with the elder Malick this long! What will bring about his ultimate demise?

I like they’re keeping Lincoln’s dark side in the conversation because he could make a good bad guy; it definitely helped Brett making the switch in my opinion because pre-Hydra reveal Ward was pretty wooden in my opinion but then they revealed him as Hydra and he’s been one of the most fun characters to watch the rest of the series so far.
It would be nice to see Fitz and Simmons involved more this season because they have been hanging in the back really; and Fitzsimmons romance doesn’t count for me, I want to see them being Fitz and Simmons as individuals and if they do Fitzsimmons moments it being friendship because they set up them trying as friends first since Fitz seems tormented by what he did to Will and how that choice has affected his relationships with others – he’s drawn closer to those who have killed more but it’s also strained his relationship with Simmons. I don’t think he would trade Will’s life for Jemma’s, but I’m not saying the thought hasn’t crossed his mind in what he might change in order to save Will too. This could be the thing which prevents a long term Fitzsimmons romance, while Fitz loves Jemma he can never look at her without thinking of Will and that being too much for him; he’ll always love Jemma but friendship is all he can do anymore because maybe he’s the kind of person who will kill to save a friend but taking a life plays too much on him and he can’t compartmentalize like others so it affects him outwardly more. This isn’t to say someone like May isn’t haunted by her actions, but she can deal with them better than Fitz so you see her being more okay on the outside where as he’s very emotional; this isn’t Fitz’s first time being extremely emotional in tense situations – he was like this hunting for Simmons and when he was being arguably pouty because Simmons just wanted to be friends in S2. I know they’ve helped out and May has hasn’t had many storylines either so far but next to other characters you see more of others interacting with people than you do them. Fitz seems mainly tied to Coulson outside of Jemma because of their moment on Maveth and Simmons sadly has been basically non existent at times; you might get a shot of her standing next to someone and she may get a line or two, but screen time wise she’s light. Hopefully it’ll pick up later in the season because right now they aren’t really doing much next to others. I don’t begrudge Lincoln and Mack screen time, but let’s not forget about Simmons and Fitz – they can help Daisy just as much as they can.
Brett did look good in this episode.
I wish we could have seen Simmons patching up Daisy after her fight last week. Killing Stephanie was a disappointment. I don’t know why Nate didn’t call out Gideon over the stone, he knew about the notch so why not say that and let others know he cheated?
I understand Dave’s dislike for the whole containment scene debate because that was the point of the unit right – to neutralize the powers? I thought the seatbelt wasn’t broken yet, that happened after he was locked up and he’s clearly using his powers inside to control the piece which shouldn’t be possible so even if he had something inside it shouldn’t have worked once the door was closed. That was a glaring continuity error I feel. I don’t know if Lincoln’s crystal was even real so I doubt James would have been able to change anyways; he was definitely an interesting character though.
I split vote for “Hard Enough” and “Bad Guy Cliché” in the CoulSass poll.
The Gideon stuff was great until they killed Stephanie.
