SHOW NOTES:
Mark Dacascos in Recurring Role
Not a fan of this week’s photo; while I enjoy them as individual characters, them together in that way I’m not okay with.
Excited for “Agent Carter”, I’m hoping the reports of Angie not being in the new season are false; she does great banter and her relationship with Peggy is great.
Ward was definitely a highlight in this episode. I’m not rooting for romantic Fitzsimmons; I would take Will/Jemma over Fitz/Jemma because Jemma’s never spent two years saying she only loves Will as a brother. There are just so many issues for me when it comes to romantic Fitzsimmons, I’m not a fan of how Fitz has acted with her and the plot is extremely out of character for Jemma Simmons so as a fan of just hers I really don’t like it. Jemma Simmons was not in this episode, this was Fitz’s girlfriend who happens to be named Jemma and look like her but it’s not Jemma Simmons that has been there previously. Romantic Fitzsimmons is not a good thing in my opinion; I know some may say it’s just bitter shipperness, and I can accept that to a point of debating ships, but this anger is also because of the loss of my favorite character and having her being forced out to make room for a plot which I’m not a fan of. Fitz’s girlfriend might be an interesting character in her own right, but I’d like to have Jemma Simmons back as well; sadly as long as Elizabeth is having to play both characters I don’t think we’ll see Jemma Simmons for awhile.
I did love the showing of the progression of the Hydra logos. It was the team who brought Jemma back, not Fitz; he was a major player it in, but so was Daisy – Fitz did not do this on his own and it’s disappointing to hear it discussed as such by characters. Daisy was killing herself in fact trying to keep it open and Mack could have fallen in as well trying to hold onto the rope so Fitz is not the only hero in that mission; in fact I’d argue he needs to be below them even if there was a ranking because he did endanger the group with that rogue jump even though it did give a solid gasp point. I will admit Fitz helped rescue Jemma but he did not do it alone. I hope Lincoln leaves S.H.I.E.L.D. because I just can’t see him full time in that environment; even though he’s not as stressed about May he’s still going to question everything (which could be interesting dynamically), they have to question his loyalties which basically don’t exist with them (yes he’s got a crush on Daisy, but that doesn’t make him loyal to anyone), and I don’t see him getting along with everyone (mostly thinking about Hunter) which would be kind of refreshing. I think it could be fun to see him creating tension for awhile, but at a point he’s going to have to leave because he never really wanted to be there in the first place.
I’m not saying Lincoln would have to leave the show, but I just can’t realistically buy him with S.H.I.E.L.D.; I can see him helping them at times, but majority span he’s not a team member. It was refreshing to see Mack question Coulson instead of Daisy like most may have expected. I loved the Daisy computer expert extravaganza. Rosalind and Coulson definitely have some great banter. If the fish oil needs the mist to produce the carbon figures then who exposed Joey to the mist; was he a former ATCU employee or a witness because how else would he change if there was no mist exposure?
Out of the ones listed, I vote for “new ways to flirt” for the CoulSass moment, but show wise I really loved Hunter’s red coat comment and Fitz’s Picasso one.
Here’s the thing with Simmons. She loves Fitz like a brother, but the circumstances of the bottom of the ocean, Fitz’s slow recovery, and him finally asking her out on a date, allowed her to consider trying it out. That’s not a gross betrayal of anything since he’s not literally her brother. Emotions evolve.
However, Simmons’ experience with Will reminded her of her true tastes, her “type” of man. She kissed Fitz because he kissed her. She’s grateful for all he’s done and is doing for her. Emotions are strong. Again, he’s not literally her brother. BUT – it won’t last. It’s just the moment. She knows she doesn’t love him in that way; she loves Will.
Simmons acting this way isn’t a betrayal of her character. It’s the normal ebb and flow of emotions surrounding the volatile situations she has been in and the feelings Fitz has for her. She got swept up. But I think her passion for Fitz will ebb once again.
Just like in real life, people change. They aren’t locked into one pattern. We choose the wrong people all the time. Heck, May chose Ward once upon a time.
I don’t think you’ll have to wait long to have YOUR Jemma back.
My thing is, if Jemma supposedly loved him like he loves her then regardless if he spoke up or not she would consider the idea of dating and what it might be like even if she never says anything to him so when he declared his love at the end of season one she’d be more receptive instead of being “Oh Fitz; I love you too but not in that way.”. And then when she returned from her undercover mission she would be more open to dating him before the end of season two after they made up, but that didn’t happen because Jemma doesn’t love him romantically. She spent more time trying to tell everyone she did love him but only as a brother than she ever did making steps towards dating Fitz. I hope I’m being clear enough with this statement, my apologizes if it’s ramble-y, but basically what they’re having the character suggest now in no way matches up with how the character feels in the previous two seasons. At least my opinion. I can entertain long ago Jemma considered dating him, but she decided she really didn’t want to after all, but she did want him in her life as her friend. I think the only reason Jemma agreed to the date at the end of season two and she said what she did before he left for the mission was because he had a suicide attitude and she didn’t want him dying just because she didn’t return his feelings.
I really didn’t like that move by Fitz either to say it didn’t matter to Jemma anyways what happened, like he was building her; he seemed to forget a lot in season two that she was in that pod too and she saved him just as much as he saved her. Again while I loved Iain’s performance, I really disliked Fitz’s aggression towards Jemma at times in season two; I know he was hurt but he crossed lines at times. Back to the topic though, Jemma agreed so Fitz wouldn’t go suicidal; I believe she wanted to talk but not that she feels the same way he does. Thus again this episode just felt really out of character to Jemma Simmons to me.
I know Fitz isn’t biologically her brother, but Jemma sees him that way thus is why I call him her brother. I feel it’s out of character to Jemma because the only place Jemma would kiss Fitz is anywhere but the lips, so with it being a lip kiss in a suggested romance setting it leaves me feeling it’s out of character. “Heck, May chose Ward once upon a time.” – is it wrong that I’m smiling at thoughts of the construction scene fight? 🙂
I hope you’re right about my Jemma coming back because this one episode has me missing her already. Thank you for taking the time to reply. I hope this message didn’t feel like one big ramble and actually provided a time worthy read.
