Agents of SHIELD Season 6 Episode 1 Review: Missing Pieces
We’re back from the super-long hiatus to talk about the season 6 premiere of Agents of SHIELD, “Missing Pieces,” and a lot has changed in the one year time jump since last year’s finale. With Mack in charge, SHIELD is in its rebuilding phase, but they’re already confronting a new mystery with destructive dimension-hoppers that include a familiar face. Meanwhile, how will the search for Fitz go in deep space?
Join us for show news, commentary and analysis for Missing Pieces, Faithβs CoulSass moments (which is taking a pass this week – no sass!), and our listener feedback segment! This week we talk about Daisy’s more finely controlled powers, Simmons’ blinding despair, Yoyo’s new interests, Mack’s leadership style, and the new characters being introduced. I’ll honest, after the dumpster fire that was S5 to me I didn’t mind the year break. If someone enjoyed it good for them but to me there was nothing redeeming really about the season because while they may hold up Coulson’s death they still recanted Fitz’s so I say Coulson could have died at the end of S4 which was a WAY better season; the story itself was just kind of meh (or maybe that was the handling of it) and I just couldn’t get excited by many character aspects. For me S5 might be the worst season ever of the series and I say this as someone who has a raging hate for S3 because of what they did to Jemma Simmons. So yeah the year off actually helped me have some care for the series again with their comeback promotion campaign because I had time to try and forget the previous season.
Re Mack: “I think he got the best character progression…” – that’s fair.
“We get Fitz…” – boo! π
The only thing I can think of is maybe Elena doesn’t want Mack to know she’s moved on soon after a possible split so maybe she’s trying to protect him in her mind that way, but yeah it doesn’t make a lot of sense why she wouldn’t just tell him as they’re not going against regulations or anything by being together.
I’m fine with Fitz not showing up soon. π I enjoy Iain’s acting but not the character anymore.
Thank you Mike for the reveal of “Butterfly”! I knew she looked familiar but I couldn’t exactly place her; now that you say it though I’m picturing her with a headscarf and I see it. π “Crazy hot” – we’ve found Dave’s crush of the season! π
Embrace the dark Simmons Dave! π What makes dark Simmons work to me is the fact we saw it perfectly done in S2 when she broke over Ward and wanted him dead; it doesn’t feel like a random plot for the season, it’s not over done…it’s just well done by Elizabeth and something I enjoy seeing sporadically. I do wish it was over someone besides Fitz or I’ll say rather I wish the context was different, she’s missing her brother instead of the relationship angle the show tries to push, but I do enjoy it.
With only 12 episodes I hope they don’t break the season.
Without spoilers potentially – time means nothing now if you go by “Endgame” standards because they totally threw out their own rules in the last 10 minutes of the movie and didn’t factor in any changes so I wouldn’t look to them as an example of good time travel management.
Bring on Iain’s acting as dark Fitz! Also the break up of Fitzsimmons as a romantic pairing; I’m not holding my breath for that one but I’d take it if that was the result of dark Fitz.
I agree with Darryl, it’s always been one sided on “it’s all connected” because only the show was effected by the movies, the movies never even had an Easter egg really to the show events even when they should have had a massive ripple effect such as the Inhuman fish oil so I never felt they were connected and as he said I’m glad they’re ignoring the movies this season.
I still say Fitz being frozen in time is a cop out; at least Clark is changing characters all together to stay on! Daisy looked great in her suit! Dark Jemma is back…and of course Daisy is helping her because Skimmons. π Unsurprisingly I am more than fine with the cryo pod being empty because again first and foremost it’s a cop out Fitz is even in play (it totally taints Iain’s performance and the hype of deaths from last season) and secondly if they found him off the bat I couldn’t enjoy the opening as much so I’m good with Fitz staying away as long as we can have that happen! I really love these opening one on ones with May and other characters, she feels very centered and complete and it’s nice to see her kind of at the most peace we’ve ever seen.
I appreciate Marvel upping their queer representation on this series by having the man in the bar have a husband but I will always be confused by this series’s lack of embracing their main perfect queer pairing in Skimmons in favor in Fitzsimmons; Daisy and Jemma have SO MUCH chemistry together and are WAY less cliche than Fitzsimmons plus Daisy treats her better I feel so it’s a disappointment to see them be ignored, they could have been amazing and be the constant quality rep the label needs!
While the Piper-Davis banter is fun all I can think of looking at Piper is how much I miss Vasquez (Briana’s character on “Supergirl”). The team saving Jemma from her own insanity was great; I especially appreciate Davis breaking up Jemma’s attempt to sway Daisy because he knows she might give in to her girl. π Okay help me out, why does the girl who walks off with Sarge at the end look so familiar?!
An interesting return regarding what do the universe hoppers want and a good return for character moments!
EDIT: I just noticed I asked about Buttefly even though Mike addressed that and I responded to his address, my apologies as I copied my responses to the podcast on my show notes and so when I pasted everything they copied over as well so please ignore that bit!
