Elseworlds was this year’s CW crossover. But this year we saw a new character introduced, Batwoman. Flash, Green Arrow and Supergirl make their way to Gotham City investigating John Deegan. Batwoman is not happy to have them in her city. Our heroes get their Bad Doc, but we are left with a Crisis on the horizon. Due to the epic nature of the crossover, the GSM shows did a mega podcast roundtable.
Elseworlds:
It seems that Dr. John Deegan was given the Book of Destiny by the Monitor and was in Gotham City. As a result of Deegan playing with the Book, Oliver Queen has taken over Barry Allen’s life and powers and become The Flash; and, Barry has likewise become Oliver and the Green Arrow. After beginning to figure out the particulars of each other’s lives they figure out through Cisco’s -Vibe’s- help, and also Supergirl’s help since she can see that they’re the right people on her Earth 38, that they need to head to Gotham City to hunt down the Bad Doctor Deegan. Before they go they SuperTeam up along with Superman to take down A.M.A.Z.O., a life threatening robot that can take on the powers of metahumans that it fights. In Gotham City we are introduced to Kate Kane, who has taken over Wayne Tower since Bruce Wayne has disappeared over three years ago. She sends them to Arkham to find Deegan.
In Arkham we had shout outs to Mister Freeze (his wife Nora coming to scrap with Killer Frost), Scarecrow, Penguin, Poison Ivy, Clayface, Riddler, Psycho-Pirate and the Luke Fox a.k.a. Batwing. Our boys fight their worst demons when Scarecrow’s fear toxin hits them so they battle Malcolm Merlin and the Reverse Flash, all the while beating the bats out of each other. Batwoman comes in to save the day and begin a very cool friendship with our own Supergirl.
In the third hour, our Supergirl episode, Barry and Oliver are once again rewritten into a new reality by Deegan who makes himself Superman (all in black). The boys find the Monitor who tells them that he is looking for somewhere in the Multiverse that will be able to deal with the upcoming “Crisis” on the horizon. He is impressed with what he’s seen so far but there is still convincing to be done. Barry and Oliver recruit this new reality’s mob boss Cisco and go back to Earth 38 to convince Superman (and newly introduced Arrowverse Lois Lane) to join them in defeating Deegan and setting reality back to right. The showdown is a big one with the return of Amazo who is deftly defeated by Brainy, J’onn protects the civilians (okay), and Alex in the whack reality realizes she needs to help Supergirl and make things right (awwwwww). Lois brings the hammer down and nearly takes Deegan out but it is Oliver who makes some kind of deal with the Monitor (that we don’t see) who ultimately saves the day. Earth 1 is set back to right and our SuperTeam heads back to their own Earth 38. Oh, and Lois and Clark had a great time in Argo City and got pregnant out of the deal, and Superman proposed to Lois, who was wearing Margot Kidder’s dress from Superman II. Awwwwwwwwwww. Again.
Closing Thoughts
Elseworlds was a fun crossover that checked so many boxes for the fans. Part 1 gave us Smallville shout outs and a battle with Amazo (seen in many of the animated series). Part 2 gave us the canonization of 90’s Flash, a Green Lantern Diggle, and Batwoman. Part 3 was an alt-Superman vs Superman battle with Arrow making a bargain with the Monitor. We all felt part 3 was the weakest and Supergirl’s show got hijacked. But the setup for next year’s Crisis on Infinite Earths has us pumped. It was also a blast to do a crossover podcast with Arrow Squad, Central City Underground and Gotham Undercover. With 7 podcasters and a ton of listener feedback it was a fun, but late night. We hope you enjoy the podcast!

First off, 7 hosts and over 2 hours of content – my hats off to the editor of this episode! Well done!
“We all felt part 3 was the weakest and Supergirl’s show got hijacked.” – it TOTALLY did; if not for Chyler in there and that moment between Alex and Kara in the hall there wouldn’t have been any “Supergirl” in the hour! Personally I’m not excited about next year’s crossover just because I don’t want Barry messing with “Supergirl”. As a whole this crossover was decent but certainly no “Crisis On Earth X”.
“What did you think of Elseworlds and Batwoman? Are you looking forward to a Batwoman series on the CW?” – Batwoman I fully enjoyed and honestly feel she saved the crossover to me; yes I am excited to see “Batwoman” especially if they set it on Earth 38 with Kara for those crossovers (we already share Maggie Sawyer in common) but if we merge with Barry then I’m admittedly less excited…he just screws up timelines too much for my liking ok. Ha. As for the crossover as a whole – again watchable but not the best by a long shot.
On to the podcast comments…
Looks like the Legends got involved with the event in the end anyways given Harley is helping Martin cover the “Arrow” aspects. 🙂
Welcome back Karen!!!
Lol to Chris with the “I don’t do math” moment.
Highlight of “Flash”: Barry and Oliver trash talking each other and then talking about how to tap into each other’s powers; his was actually a high point of the crossover as a whole to me after Kate/Batwoman.
Highlight of “Arrow”: Kate/Batwoman!
Highlight of “Supergirl”: Danvers sisters!
My favorite Oliver line of the night was easily: “No I didn’t, the Flash did!” when Barry asked him if he stole from the cops. My favorite Barry line was: “Once Oliver cheated on his girlfriend with her sister!” because that should never be forgotten. 🙂
Sadly to me Kara felt like a glorified babysitter for the guys either making sure they didn’t die in Gotham or cleaning up their messes because she didn’t really do much beyond that it felt; even in her own show hour there was WAY too much Superman and she kind of hung in the back then. She felt more like a guest star this year than a big part of the event like last year.
I’ll agree with Geoff, Amazo was cool!
Again I say set “Batwoman” on Earth 38; we can just say Earth 1 Kate was due to the messing with the book and now it’s back to Bruce in Gotham so “Arrow” can have someone come on because of how long he’s been talking him and Batman up and “Batwoman” is Earth 38 so we get Kara-Kate moments without dealing with a timeline screw up each season (again Barry makes me nervous) just to have those moments. Ruby can play both versions if they still want a Kate 1 too! We don’t have to merge to get Kate-Kara moments writers; also there’s the portal device too if they just want to keep “Batwoman” on Earth 1 so again no need to merge.
The fear tas was an amazing use and they should use it again on the series! Can you image Alex hyped up on it, especially the fear gas/Bane venom mix that taps into your fight side…Chyler would rock it! Again I feel another fan made a great point on how the scene could have been even better if John was Reverse Flash and Tom was Malcolm for that scene.
I wasn’t a fan of the “fight” between Nora Freis and Caitlin because it wasn’t a fight, Caitlin sadly got taken out the second she came into the scene.
AGREED Karen, the “What is love without respect? Without trust?” scene between Felicity and Caitlin was GREAT!
Agreed Karen, the Flash suit did not look good on Oliver. Agreed Chris Barry wore the Arrow suit good.
“I thought there would be more of him” – I’d also apply this to Batwoman Chris as for as much as they promoted her for this event she’s only in it maybe all together 10 minutes, I’d guess less for an actual amount but rounding you might get close to 10.
I’d give Elizabeth an ok; I do like Amy and Terri better but overall for what we saw her with Elizabeth’s Lois was ok.
“To be fair neither did we.” – LOL John; well done sir. As Karen said there was no “Supergirl” hour really; yes they have that moment with the sisters so it’s debatably but really there was no “Supergirl” in this crossover. If they want a wedding on “Supergirl” save it for Alex getting married because they owe us a wedding with her!
I am personally not into a Superman show for a variety of reasons, 1) I’m not a fan of this Clark (I don’t hate him but I don’t get excited by him either; I like Henry’s version from the films because he’s not so naive), 2) I do fear it will overshadow “Supergirl” because Clark is bigger in name just as a Batman show would over shadow “Arrow” I think, 3) I’m not sold on Lois as others said – she’s not a hard pass as others gave her but she’s not exactly one I gravitated too like I did with again Amy or Terri, 4) there’s enough Superman stuff out there now so I actually love CW DC TV touches on the B team members if you will (Flash being excluded as he’s a main member of the Justice League and the biggest name of the current line up name recognition wise) – them dipping into the rosters makes for more fun, it’s actually one thing Marvel could learn from them instead of just staying with a select group, 5) I’m not crazy over Argo City and 6) given “Superman: The New Adventures Of Lois & Clark” wasn’t really that long ago it could feel too soon, I know it’s been a decade but still that’s not enough time for those fans to forget that show enough to want a remake.
I still say actually having Superman/Clark on “Supergirl” was one of the worst things because one he overshadows Kara when he’s on (fellow Arrow fans I’m saying be careful calling for Bruce/Batman), I get they want to play with the new toys but he really for me does anything positive when he’s on the show to get excited when I see him in promos; he also makes Kara into someone she’s not when he’s around (yeah she doesn’t like Kryptonite used but she was never naive about it until Clark showed up), the fact they made her a reporter because of him in a sense even though she never showed wanting to do that in S1 annoys me, they now have to explain to some people why he can’t help more when before it was just “this is your city, this is mine” and everyone was ok about it, and it’s always him coming over never Kara saying how she helped Clark this weekend in Metropolis with some villain so it just feels like an unbalanced dynamic and I don’t like it. I get he’s fun for some people but I don’t like the move to put him physically on screen. The only good that’s come from him for me is now it’s harder for DC to explain why “Arrow” can’t have Bruce Wayne at least on, if you can have Clark guest why not Bruce?
To Karen and John: are we assuming making diamonds is how Kara has food money now and pays Eliza for her apartment, assuming she pays her rent given I’m pretty sure Eliza bought that place as no way Kara could afford it on her salary, because if she’s not then missed opportunity! Ha.
I’m with Iris – no dark Oliver like Barry!
Are you talking about Nora West Allen Harley? 🙂
This season has been arguably one of the best for “Arrow” so I think they could at least get another season just to wrap things up and or set up Emiko Queen as the new “Arrow” so it continues but not with Stephen. How many will watch without Stephan and by extension Emily possibly is the question but it is an option. If the crossover happens at the start of the season’s then Karen you’re probably right in Oliver is going to die; will he stay dead is another question because again can “Arrow” continue if they wanted one more run without Oliver…this genre is known for people coming back from obvious and non so obvious deaths so we’ll see. The debate about Oliver I feel will be the debate of the hiatus understandably so of course. I just hope they know what they want to do with the scene and don’t repeat the grave debate from season 4 of “Arrow” where they clearly had no idea until the end almost who it would be.
No merging Kara with Barry! Also if they do then “Black Lightening” has to come over too because it makes no sense to leave it behind if the original separate Earth show is now coming in; if they leave it on its own Earth put merge in “Supergirl” and Barry screws up stories I like in National City I’m going to be extra mad!
“It’s been 30 years…” – ha Karen; it’s a fair amount of warning time.
Agreed Christy the whole doubt of body switching by the Flash team really took me out of their hour. Also as Martin and Cammie said the whole “my spouse is better than your spouse” part in the “Arrow” hour was annoying because Iris clearly didn’t know Oliver was Barry either!
I agree Amanda the “Oliver makes a secret deal” plot is SO over done! I also agree writers forgetting things (Kara doesn’t work for the DEO) is annoying!
“Welcome to the dark side!” – lol John!
#KeepBlackSirenEvil! Yes to Birds Of Prey featuring Helena “Huntress” Bertinelli! “At least it wasn’t Bebo!” – YES Chris!!! You did do justice to the message John. 🙂 Glad I could amuse you all some and hopefully make the length not seem so bad, again John you did it justice! 🙂
“Coming this Spring: Deegan!” – lol that was perfect Chris!
“It’s Arrow’s fortitude!” – lol Karen; that was a great comeback and SO something Oliver would say!
Barry is faster as he can be as fast as light. Clark could have blown out his powers like Kara does at times and they got pregnant then.
Agreed Darryl, Lena is not evil!
“Supergirl” when it shines is easily the best show on the CW to me; most of it comes from Chyler and Melissa of course but you take something like “Livewire”, “Human For A Day”, or “For The Girl Who Has Everything” and watch the cast as a whole they’re good. This isn’t to say the other actors/shows don’t have good episodes or moments because they have but for me too “Supergirl” is the one I’d watch again and again. I’m bummed to hear you don’t watch it Martin and Harley as it’s got a lot of good; yes seasons 2 and 3 had issues (the main one to me being Mon) and season 4 has been sadly heavy handed but S1 was amazing and as a series whole I think it averages out to still really good. “We know you can be better so why aren’t you?” – exactly Karen; we’ve seen S1 we know how amazing it can be so when they do questionable things later we’re going to call it out. Continuity and organic situations do matter writers, the action is fun but we stay for the characters!
“Yeah that’s not even close to real physics.” – ha Harley.
The Monitor actor was good.
I agree with you Geoff on there needing to be just one big writers room of select people, like say the heads of each show or even the top 3 writers from each show, to have consistency amongst all the parts and to decide what will or won’t effect the shows coming out of a crossover but I disagree on the merging because Barry’s timeline shifts make me nervous; again I’m still waiting on baby Sara to come back.
I certainly laughed the most at this crossover Harley but I don’t think they meant for me to laugh at everything I did so I have knock points for that; also as others have said the pacing wasn’t great. If I had to rate it I’d probably give it a 6.5 because Batwoman was SO good but everything else was just so bad. There were good moments such as Barry and Oliver in the cell, the banter between them when giving each other a hard time, and again Batwoman but a lot of it for me was just a miss.
Superman carrying Kara better be out of context Karen, although with him gone why can’t J’onn do it to use him more? Also still it would have to be out of context because no killing Kara; “Supergirl” deserves as many seasons as “Arrow” if not more! As for the Flash suit what if Barry being all broody now because of something let’s it puddle on the floor and then everyone can get the new suit they want so much for him? 🙂
Why don’t you merge into GSM Martin? Ha.
“Crisis On Infinite Podcasts!” – ha Chris!
Ha, Karen with the most real sign off of all.
A GREAT podcast episode!
Happy holidays to everyone and a happy new year!!!
Thanks for your great thoughts and feedback Team Huntress a.k.a. Aaron! You rock!
