Oh how I’d love to see Caitlin Parrish run a season as her episodes don’t let me down, at worst I’d give ones she’s involved with a “decent” but when she’s heading an episode like “Livewire” and it’s just her and another writer as the leads she kills it! Sadly she’s pretty busy it sounds with a new show so I’ll just take what assistance I can get from her here.
Oh S3…it had potential but just got marred down by extremes, each week was such a swing of the pendulum as it were; an example is one week/season Lena can do no wrong in Kara’s eyes then this season she’s suddenly questioning everything she says she does because plot? You had an amazing plot with Reign and Sam but that plot only got partial time thanks to the Legion who were on because “look this questionable relationship between Mon and Kara wasn’t as bad as you thought!” (It will forever be toxic to me). We had an entire throw away episode essentially in my mind with Argo City because it really brought nothing to the season so I feel that whole episode was just a bust looking at the whole. Alex wants kids which is great but we don’t need to hear it every episode to get she wants kids; Lames is still lame in my opinion and there’s still too much of trying to make Kara Clark in some aspects and I don’t like it.
This season would have been a fail for me had it not been for Odette Annabel who killed it as Sam/Reign; Katie, Chyler, and David of course were good as always and it was fun seeing Carl Lumbly linked to Martian Manhunter but the rest is very hit and miss. I liked Irma but she was never used enough, Mon was this weird back and forth of mature but not and because of last year how they handled him I just can’t deal with him long term in a positive manner, we had Psy who was fun but they sidelined Leslie which sucks (SHE’S NOT DEAD AS THERE WAS NO BODY WHEN KARA TURNED AROUND!), and there were some good episodes such as “Schott Through The Heart” but also some duds again like “Argo City”. I personally think this season had a little more going for it than S2 but they’re pretty even, I feel the 6.5-7 range is fair for this.
Worldkillers yay or nay? I liked them, again Odette helped save the season from being the worst yet (S2 isn’t horrible thanks to Katie as Lena, Floriana as Maggie, an that amazing coming out story for Alex but the rest is incredibly frustrating so it’s the worst of “Supergirl” arguably but not the worst season of a CW superhero show in my opinion as S7 of “Arrow” was pretty bad – extremely frustrating with some actions there) but as Karen said I was hoping for more and this is part of why I have an issue with Mon coming back and I limit it to Mon Karen only because he got the most time of them because to be fair Brainy and Irma didn’t get fleshed out either they were just there it felt at times to give weight to his coming back plot; had they not spent so much time on Mon’s return I believe there would have been more time for the worldkillers which would have given us a good dark season as they were whipping Kara’s butt pretty easily and getting to her support team which wasn’t good for anyone.
It really was Reign and her team versus the Worldkillers being of equal ability.
Speaking of Reign though, she’s not dead either she’s just locked away because supposedly due to Ruby’s human side but Sam is still biologically Krytonian so even with Reign locked away shouldn’t she have powers like Kara’s level versus being stronger than Kara as her cells have been enhanced due to Reign (she’s a super Krytonian)…Sam should totally still have powers right? Letting Odette Annabel go after S3 – point deduction for sure because the topic of “what happens if you can help but don’t because you fear your powers?” would be so interesting to see especially with Odette’s acting ability! Just because you have powers should you be forced to use them; is it okay to say “no” to being the hero essentially? In Sam’s specific case, what happens when Sam agrees with the darkness Reign may tempt her with such as taking out a group of drug dealers permanently; what are the emotional effects of something like that? There are plots you can do with her that you can’t with Kara because Kara has moved beyond fearing her powers and she literally doesn’t have a Mr. Hyde type inside her trying to destroy everything. Also you have Ruby and does she have powers maybe and how does Sam handle that and how does Ruby feel fearing they’re Reign level?
It’s just a shame they let Odette go this year but you could say the same about Floriana last year and how we haven’t seen Peter as Max since S1.
Legion? I’m with Geoff, you would think they’d wake up more for the final battle at least. As this season’s casting reveals shows they don’t mind cramming everyone in so why not have them as nods for fans? Yes it’s cheaper but still. The Legion to me was a bust personally because it felt more about Mon than them and again Irma was arguably the most interesting one yet we got nothing really on her. Her marriage plot got revoked essentially sadly because Karamel which again bad, she was without question the best fighter against the worldkillers yet she was hardly ever used like she should have been, and everything we really learned about her was tied to her husband beyond the sister plot to connect the whole season suddenly which harf.
I don’t mind Mon being married Karen my issue is the bullcrap “arranged marriage” plot they threw in mid season to make Karamel seem like it wold happen even though Chris was leaving and they didn’t need it – what was so wrong with having Mon and Irma be happily married and helping Kara?! I know it’s less easy drama but you know writers good organic drama and healthy relationships are good things too which you should also write; they didn’t need to push a potential cheating plot (which is what it was) to have angst as it’s only been months for Kara so she could have been upset over this dude she hardly knew or who was hardly good for her, that’s another topic by itself, if she wanted and nothing would have changed except Mon would have looked more mature staying with his wife he loved enough to marry because it’s been 7 years for him and it would have helped that character arguably with fans like me but doing cheap drama that they did just deeply harmed the plot.
Once again arguably too much focus on Mon and poor handling for a plot involving him. Things like this are especially frustrating when you see other plots like a Sam one being done so well overall.
Cliffhangers? How about a cliffhanger we’re still waiting to see pay off from season one with Max and the hexadron or whatever it was called, are we ever going to see that plot pay off? I’d love to see Max come back and screw with them because he’d be a good challenge for everyone and a fun bonus would be Alex shutting him down as he tried to hit on her before moving on to possibly Lena. π Also can we have Vasquez back – she is so the one who keeps the DEO going in terms of heart, Alex and J’onn are the brains. In terms of S3 specifically though, my biggest plot hole is the Kara-Lena stuff; forget paying that off how did it even realistically start?! That was so forced and it sucks. If they want to act like that never happened in S4 I will give them a free handwave pass for it!
I’m fine with no Alura as Melissa and Erica just didn’t pop as much as Melissa and Laura.
Ok here’s my thoughts on Sanvers, there never should have been a teased wedding; you can have the breakup go down the same way without a wedding tied to it. S2 should have ended for them with Maggie smiling on the balcony and not giving an answer instead of saying yes; you could have then opened S3 with Alex making a comment to Maggie about how she doesn’t want her to think she’s making any more rash decisions after Maggie ask about a choice Alex made in a fight and Maggie could say “I told you Alex not now doesn’t mean no forever; I’m flattered you asked, I just think we need to get to know one another more first before we commit to something as big as that.” and then you can have them slowly separating because of things they don’t agree on. Kids can still be the final straw and you get the break up scene in E5 minus the rings because they aren’t engaged officially; this still gives you Alex’s baby plot and kid desire moments with Ruby which also teases potential Sam/Alex since the show was clearly into romantic relationships again this season but gives you less angry fans maybe because they’re not angry you baited them with a wedding that was never going to happen. These writers know how important happy endings for queer pairings are to queer fans especially so why act like you’re going to do a wedding when you know Floriana is only there for 5 episodes to wrap up the Maggie storyline? It was just poor handling as again they could have broken up over kids still without the marriage potential plot as an extra.
Killing Sam? Boo!
“Sorry my office is near the fire station.” – ironically John it was well timed because the siren going off sounded like a plane going down which felt appropriate in sound to what Karen was saying in how Sanvers split was just poorly done.
“And I don’t think she had it with Sam.” – I’m going to challenge you on that one Karen. π Even though I feel she has chemistry with Sam and I wanted to see flirting I wouldn’t want to see them just jump into a romance because it would feel forced in S3 as Maggie is a big deal to Alex and thus she needs time to process her feelings about their time together and Sam had Reign going on so it would have felt cliche for them to hook up soon after the Sanvers split. S4 could have been their romance but Odette isn’t in this season sadly.
Again Geoff I don’t mind kids being the issue for Sanvers because I feel that’s a realistic reason for a pair to split up, but it was the added wedding that didn’t work because this is something you should talk about before you get married so it was as you said the handling more for me than the why; the why actually was the only element that worked for the Sanvers stuff in S3 I felt as everything else was cut down to highlights version sadly. I don’t know if you’ve all seen the deleted scenes yet but there’s a lot of Sanvers content, it’s a Chyler said they cut a lot of stuff and it doesn’t make sense why as some stuff would have gone a ways to make the split feel more organic arguably. They needed Maggie to leave town but you could have easily done that with kids and a job offer to Gotham and Alex wasn’t going to leave at the end of the day because she’s not going to leave Kara and Maggie can’t really deny the job for some reason.
LOL to reporter Kara, sorry to fans of that but she just isn’t good at it and 2) it’s too much like Clark which again can we stop trying to make Kara Clark writers? They share DNA yes but they are not the same person!!! >:( I’ll be honest and say going from Cat to Kara feels like a step down for Nia.
Kara has always been as much a hero as Supergirl, the only one who doesn’t know it is Kara.
Lol, well done Karen with the “soap box!” cough!
If they’re going to do the whole “Supergirl is evil because powers” plot then I want at least one character who’s a counterpoint to that in that they’re human and evil because some of the worst villains as we know are those.
Diechen Lauchman is who you’re thinking of Karen; she was also Roulette on “Supergirl”.
I’m a little bummed you all didn’t mention what you wanted to see in S4.
I’m excited for this season because it’s suppose to be a return to the Danvers sisters to the degree they were in S1 so that’s a plus.
I’m hoping they don’t make Alex naive about lethal approaches because true it shouldn’t be your go to move but sometimes the DEO needs extreme force on some people and Kara isn’t always available so for her to just dismiss the concept like James did doesn’t make sense.
I don’t expect it to be S1 but I hope it’s close as always!
