Welcome back to Maid of Steel! While Scarlet Cougar is taking PTO, I’ve recruited fellow GSM Podcaster John (aka The Substitute) to join me on this installment of the podcast. Hopefully that helps explain why this podcast is coming to you so late in the week, and I do apologize for that. You may recognize John from Triplecast or from the retired pod Stuff I Learned Yesterday. We discuss Supergirl Season 3 Episode 3 “Far from the Tree” which originally aired on October 23, 2017 and featured the much anticipated guest appearance by Carl Lumbly!
Mission to Mars
We don’t have a sweet shape-shifting, 50’s-style convertible, but our conversations jetison us to far off places in this discussion. Neither John nor I really enjoyed the episode and spend some time trying to break down the story and explain what it was that was missing. There were some confusing narrative points that prevented us from connecting with one half of the story, and that ultimately overshadowed the A-Story of Kara and J’onn’s mission to mars.
Next Week
Episode 4 is entitled “Faithful”. Check out the trailer by clicking here!
Road to Justice League
Give Triplecast some love and go have a listen to their first installment of the Road to Justice League, which features a discussion about Man of Steel. Keep up with that podcast, too, because in the next few weeks we’ll be getting a discussion on Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice AND Wonder Woman!

“Papa J’onn’s” – ha. The “Justice League” cartoon is definitely where I know Carl from; a great series!
As John said the split over kids is forced because they need a way for Floriana to exit and there’s really not much else that would split the pair up; kids is a believable issue as Karen has said but it’s the timing that’s problematic as you’d think most would discuss this topic pre-proposal. Again I wish they had Maggie pump the brakes in the S2 finale and that been something that caused friction between them on top of the kids issue because that would have felt more organic and in character in my opinion; I get Alex proposing because Kara asked and she does love Maggie and she wants Kara happy but Maggie saying “yes” felt arguably out of character as she’s the logical one of the pair so she should have said “I love you too but we need to talk about things first”. The cliffhanger smile would have worked better given they didn’t know what was going to happen with Floriana contract wise at that point – it could go either way; at this point they’re just trying to have as believable an exit as they can with the story that’s been told so far and it doesn’t feel as organic as had they given themselves room by not having Maggie answer in the finale.
Because we know Floriana is leaving it makes all their moments feel more scripted and/or cliche so I agree it can be hard to invest in their moments at times; I’m glad they explained why Floriana was leaving (she wanted to do other things and only signed for one full season) but I do wonder if the story would have worked better not knowing she was leaving soon. Would people have been more or similarly as upset seeing Maggie go not knowing until after why she was leaving…it part of the spoiler debate – does the plot work better/it’s more emotional like the writers hope learning after Floriana left or does it feel off regardless? Beware the spoilers as Emilee might say.
“Okay; this blue car they got into…” – lol Emilee. You definitely get points Emilee for trying the alien languages! π
What if Psi gets her hands on the staff somehow? A psychic weapon with someone of her caliber…it could definitely lead to another good battle with Kara; if we’re not getting Livewire any time soon bring on Psi as she’s up there with her awesome villain wise! It would also be cool to see other characters’ fears explored such as does Winn worry about becoming evil like his dad still? What is Alex’s fear – is it Jeremiah like some might guess or is it something else? What worries Lena? We know Kara fears being alone and J’onn fears fire so it would be interesting to see others’ issues and how they deal with them.
I do wonder was Britney J’onn’s or Kara’s choice; if Kara’s did she get yelled at on the way home for touching his radio? π As for the Martians being human the simple answer is it saves on CGI.
Love UPSMan’s sign off!
Another good fill-in job John!
I’ll admit I’m into “Justice League” for Diana really; I enjoy Lois and Clark and Barry could have cute moments but Diana is number one as far as the movies go for me currently.
