Welcome back to the Maid of Steel podcast! It’s a bittersweet release, this episode, due to it being about the Supergirl Season 1 finale, but we were excited to chat about it and hope you’re eager to listen in. This episode is the main discussion of Supergirl Season 1 Episode 20 “Better Angels” which originally aired on April 18, 2016. Once again, we received so much feedback that we are releasing a second episode that is listener feedback-driven! A huge, huge thank you to all our new feedbackers, you totally stepped up to the challenge! I am floored and so honored.

Made of Hope

Ah, yes. Our big resolution. The culmination of a season’s worth of fighting the Kryptonians. While it might be anticlimactic when viewed through the season finale lens, I have to say that I’m actually a fan of seeing a resolution that didn’t result in a city being destroyed. The superhero films that have mesmerized our generation all seem to think that in order to stop evil they must destroy everything in their path. And recently I’ve said how much I dislike that approach.

When I put that into perspective, I realized that this story is basically the exact opposite of what we usually get. So maybe it was a little sappy, maybe it was a little lacking in legitimate science, but it’s even more unbelievable to me that an entire city would be destroyed by one or two men (I’m thinking Man of Steel, here).

Because Kara is made of hope, she immediately has a different approach than her super counterparts. Different than Superman, different than Batman, different than The Flash… and that, in the end, is why we watch this show, right? She does things her way. She’s had to face her Aunt Astra, her sister, her bizarro self, and finally her Uncle Non, who maybe never saved much love for her, but still is family. When it comes to family, everyone has a different perspective, but I can definitely see a piece of Kara believing that it is her responsibility to get through to Non, in spite of Astra’s death.

The fundamental difference between Clark (of Smallville) and Kara is Kara’s ability to see beyond appearances. Clark always had this inability to look past the hurt inflicted on him while someone was not in control of themselves, he held grudges forever and expected everyone to be perfect, but Kara doesn’t think for a moment that Winn and James should be held responsible for what they said and did under the influence of Myriad.

They dare not leave us without a cliffhanger! Just when our heroes thought they could bust open a bottle of champagne and toast to love and hope, a giant fireball comes streaking across the sky! Just because Non and Indigo are taken care of doesn’t mean National City just goes on its merry little way, I suppose. But it’s good, because this cliffhanger seems like it will unveil a great story for the second season in addition to giving fans plenty to speculate over in the meantime. Undoubtedly as casting news comes out throughout the summer we will start to form a clearer picture about who or what is in the ship.

The ship that looks exactly like Kara’s ship. If they hadn’t gone into the multi-verse discussion with The Flash, I almost wouldn’t even bring this up now… but it’s certainly possible, isn’t it? They’ve established the multi-verse on this show so it could be some trans-dimensional version of Kara, Clark, or, heck, even Alex at this point! She did fly in it to save Kara. There could be some timey-whimey things happening there. I can’t tell what I want most at this point. Another character, or another version of an existing character? Perhaps if it was Clark as a boy, it would solve the whole not-having-Superman-on-the-show thing. But… I do love it when actors get to play multiple versions of themselves on a show, so I’d also love it if it was Kara as a young child.

Next Year

Supergirl’s renewal is a “a sure thing”, according to basically every source. It’s just a matter of time before the announcement is made and everyone stops worrying their pretty little heads! Until then, we hope to see you around this summer as we fill in the gaps with some update episodes here and there.

Will you be having Dr. Pepper with your Netflix? Ha.

I would suggest waiting a few issues, maybe 6 or 7, before doing the comic book podcast that way you have a good sample and a possible full arc story to discuss for the first few issues but if you want to go issue by issue since it is a monthly thing then that’s fine too. The extras sound awesome! Hopefully they’ll be on both the DVD and Blu-Ray sets instead of just Blu-Ray as some extras are known to do now days; that’s a real bummer I have to say as someone without a blu-ray player, seeing all the good features on it when you could have them on DVD as well. Excited to rewatch the series when they are purchasable.

I DEFINITELY think Cat knows Kara is Supergirl, certainly by this episode, even before this episode; as Emilee said you have Kara’s family there and then there’s that whole own office thing with a possible window (for easy come/go)…I think Cat is saying I know without actually saying the words. I’m fine with this approach as long as at series end it’s made clear Cat knows and has known for awhile because if she doesn’t until Kara says something then it’s going to make Cat look dumb and as we’ve all said before Cat is not dumb! I really hope they don’t have Alex falling for Max’s ploys and underestimating him again because that’d be as ridiculous to me as Cat not knowing Kara is Supergirl at this point; she’s seen what he can and will do for power and how he can be towards Kara so why on any planet in any universe would Alex ever trust Max even the smallest bit? It’s one thing to admit he’s helpful in situations but to be played by him again…no; Alex-Max banter battles yes but romance or underestimating each other no!

I have liked Lucy overall, but I do wish they’d done more with her as DEO leader because she’s really feel flat in that area so far. I agree, they’d be better off not forcing Clark in places; it’s one thing to mention him, but another to have him in for image only basically because he really was as pointless as Maxima in this arc. Agree with Emilee, still not over how fast Felicity started walking.

I don’t know about Superboy; it depends on what his plots are going to be like. It’s okay Karen, I’ve got a “Mass Effect” character named after Hawkgirl so you aren’t alone. 🙂 Looking forward to the summer podcasts!
