Delicate times and delicate negotiations gave way to violence and growth on this week’s Gotham. Jim confronts the past, his uncle, and chooses to fight. Penguin has to learn to play nice with Ivy to survive. Bruce faces the start of his destiny willingly or un-willingly. Dark obsessions are ahead for our characters!
(Many thanks to John McGrail for co-hosting with me this week)
Delicate Family Matters:
Jim has several conversations with Uncle Frank Gordon (James Remar). Jim finds out that the Falcone mob took out his dad. The order came from Frank. When confronted, Frank says he had no choice. Frank tells Jim that the Owls have voted to destroy Gotham and the weapon is on it’s way to the docks. We learn that this is not the first time the Owls have done this and the stakes are raised. He talks with Harvey and spills the whole story. But they have a problem. Jim and the GCPD can pursue the lead about the weapon. Harvey phones a friend.
Queen Barbara is on the throne of Gotham’s underworld. She is holding court at the Sirens club with Tabs. She gets the call and is glad to get in on the investigation because there are no rules. She and Tabs have the doc workers on lockdown and one is in the hot seat. She is having Tabs whip and hurt him. She gets the answer that the Owls have been using their private dock for a long time and none of the mobs interfere. The shipment has come in already and is marked with the Indian Hill logo. But before she can open the package, a Talon takes out her crew. She and Tabitha escape and get the info to Jim.
Frank is given a not so delicate ultimatum by the Owls. Kill Jim or else. Jim confronts Frank with the bad news about the weapon. Frank explains that the Gordon’s need someone on the inside to take down the court but it cannot be him. He says when Kathryn calls, he needs to tell her he killed Frank and wants to join the Owls. Frank then kills himself. Jim answers the call and heads to the Owls’ limo.
Not So Delicate Ivy:
Penguin is wheeled into the greenhouse by Ivy. She says she found the place and it is abandoned. But I have to wonder, by whom? Was this Hugo Stranger’s house? Well we don’t find out but we do see that Oswald is ready to kill Ed. But there is a problem, He can’t do it himself. He sees her as a freak ignores and treats Ivy as delicate, but has her go get Gabe. Gabe arrives and is happy to see Oswald. He says he will round up the boys for Oswald. Ivy wisely tells Oswald not to trust Gabe and is ignored. Gabe knocks Oswald out saying he should have listened to Ivy.
Gabe and the boys are going to auction off the right to kill the Penguin to the highest bidder. Ivy has been captured as well. Ivy convinces Oswald she is not so delicate. She uses her controlling perfume to have a thug kill everyone but Gabe. Oswald is seeing her value and has her whammy Gabe. He says that he will betray the Penguin because none of them respected him only feared him. He is a freak. This sends Oswald into a rage and he kills Gabe.
Oswald apologizes for the mess with the bodies and is distraught because he can’t conquer Gotham without an army. Ivy suggests he round op the Indian Hill freaks. He can build an army of freaks (like him).
Delicate Destiny:
Bruce awakens in his cell. The Shaman (Raymond J. Barry) says he needs to eat and prepare for training. When his cell opens, he runs out but the place is magical and he runs in circles. Finally he sits down with The Shaman. The Shaman tries to explain that the Court of Owls are just tools and that both he and Bruce need to get back to Gotham. He takes out an enchanted needle and touches Bruce’s forehead. Bruce is transported to his memory of the night of his parents murder and only watches.
Later he tries to fight Shaman inside the cell and fails. They are transported back to the memory. Bruce moves to stop the crime. The people fade and Bruce tries to fight Shaman and gets hit. He wakes up hurt. The Shaman explains that he can train him to remember every detail of a memory. He can train him in so much more. Bruce is at a delicate time and needs to learn his destiny. That destiny is to protect Gotham as a symbol to help alive the people’s fear.
Closing Thoughts:
Well the twists and turns with Frank thew me for a loop but that is what I love about the writers on this show. They write things smartly and give the actors room to grow. I cannot wait to see what they do with Jim and the Owls, Bruce and The Shaman, and Ivy & Penguin. It was great to discuss this episode with John. Folks this season keeps getting better. Tell your friends!
