From Cybermen and Cyberwars, to secret planets and portals to Gallifrey, the penultimate episode of season 12 of Doctor Who, titled “Acension of the Cybermen, may have been short on plot but delivered on both action and visuals. The first part of this two-parter season finale finds the Doctor and Fam in the far far future. In this strange time they must battle the remainder of the Cyberman Empire while saving the last of humankind. As if that wasn’t enough, Chibnall and crew end this cliff hanger with a glimpse of Gallifrey and a great entrance by the Master!
As the story begins the Doctor and Fam show up to help a desperate and rag tag group of humans on a distant planet far in the future. Our heroes bring impressive technology in the hopes of stopping the oncoming extermination. They quickly discover that the seven humans hiding here, may be the last of humanity on this side of the universe. After quickly dispatching the Doctors equipment, the Cybermen send both the remaining humans and the Doctor and her friends scurrying in multiple directions. Now led by the enigmatic lone Cyberman named Ashad, the Cybermen chase the various groups across the stars. The final act of this episode takes place on a planet that houses a gateway to random destinations across the Universe. This is humanity’s final chance to survive the Cyberwars. How will it all end? The only way it could, with Gallifrey and the Master of course!!
Sewn throughout this entire episode is a mysterious side story about a seemingly immortal man. Where does this all fit in with the timeless child, the Ruth Doctor, the Master’s strange warnings, and the rest of the season?
