Welcome to the review for “Resolution”, the season 11 New Year’s Day special episode of Doctor Who. Could it be true that the most dangerous foe that The Doctor has ever faced, is back again? In a manner of speaking, yes, The Doctor has to face a Dalek, and on New Year’s Day of all days!
The “Resolution” episode offers a unique new twist on the whole Dalek dilemma, as well as giving us a resolution in Ryan’s issues with his father Aaron. Along the way, we also encounter Chekov’s microwave oven, and find out why nobody is able to help out from UNIT.
Join us as we discuss all this, give our episode ratings, and share your brilliant listener feedback!

I was okay with Ryan’s dad showing up as it felt like yet another piece to the Ryan-Graham plot for the season (again I hope next season focuses on Yaz because she’s due after their focus) but the microwave felt random; had Aaron been holding it when Ryan opened the door because he didn’t know how to start the conversation then that would have been one thing but for it to be in the restaurant instead felt like a set up just to use it later which cheapens it some. It was a cool use don’t get me wrong but it felt cheaper having it kind of shoved in versus Doctor stripping one to use from say Graham’s house, she broke his chair why not use the microwave. Ha. I took more issue with Ryan instantly forgiving Aaron than I did him being on the Tardis…as other fans have said Ryan could have easily rushed to help him because he doesn’t want anyone to die he didn’t have to forgive him after that.
I was definitely worried Yaz might go in the sun scene when she slipped and then I worried Graham might sacrifice himself for Ryan to have his dad have another shot but thankfully all our mains lived! 🙂
Stairs are also the enemy of the dalek!
Realistically I might give this a 9.8 but emotionally I just gave it a 10. 🙂
I kind of want to see what an updated Weeping Angel looks like but I also don’t want to see them ever again because they took Amy. 🙁
The Doctor facing off with the dalek via hologram was probably my favorite moment; I know not everyone likes a dark Doctor but to me it feels like a refreshing take after the Smith run and with Jodie it feels like a continuation of a Capaldi trait and given Capaldi is probably “my Doctor” as some would say I really like this feature in Jodie’s version. She can be light and fluffy most of the time but they should be afraid of the dark with her either as it also hints again towards Hurt’s Doctor and why Doctor tries to avoid that side of themself.
I have to say as long as daleks are defeated by stairs it’s going to be hard for me to be appropriately terrified of them, I know they’re scary on flat surfaces but you find a hill or stairs and you’re pretty much safe. Ha. I actually thought this dalek was more scary out of his suit than in it because no one wants to kill their friend and whatever a human can do they can use them to do so it makes me wonder why not posses people more rather than go suited. The Weeping Angels are the most scary to me still currently because 1) they took Amy and two you have to blink so they’re almost impossible to escape!
“Best Jodie episode yet” – I’d agree with that!
I agree, Aaron, an updated set of Weeping Angels would surely be frightening! We can dream can’t we?
And now we “patiently” wait…
