Some Thoughts from Joe about All Star Team Up!

In Praise of the Lesser Known Villains

So this week, in “All Star Team Up”, we got our first, brief, and hopefully not last look at a massively-revamped Bug-Eyed Bandit. Compared to Bertram Larvan (shown below), Emily Kinney was a welcome sight, even if she was only there for a few minutes. But I thought I’d take a moment to shout out the praises of Flash, and it’s willingness to embrace the C-and-D Listers of the DC villain community.

Look, who doesn’t love a Gorilla Grodd or a Reverse-Flash or a Capt. Cold? These are the big guns, the heavy-hitters of the Flash rogues. Heatwave, Trickster, Weather Wizard…they may not have quite the same draw, but they’re still big players in their own rights. But for every psychic ape-monster or time-traveling psychopath, there are a dozen Rainbow Raiders and Blackouts and…wait, is Everyman showing up soon too? Sure, these guys are the small-timers and the never-weres, but do I love seeing their wackiness come to life on the Flash? I sure do. In some ways, they’re lovely nods to those who’ve followed the comics for years, those who’ve glanced at a 1960s issue and thought “Oh my lord. Who is that doofus in rainbow pajamas?” But even if you’ve not gloried in the silliness of some of the small-timers, their powers can be fun to see on the small screen. All I have to say is “bee swarm taking the form of Emily Kinney’s face.”

So let us raise a glass to the goofy, the nonsensical, and the downright laughable. You guys may never get your special invite to the Legion of Doom, but you’re out there making the big guys look more dangerous, and giving us all a good chuckle.

Besides, you know you want to see The Turtle show up at some point.
